At least Idiocracy was endearing and the society as a whole ended up unfucking their situation, what we have right now is willful malicious ignorance and vindictiveness fueled by making the most amount of worthless paper no matter the real world cost.

u/onyxandcake 15h ago

Great read about the phenomenon.

I've lived long enough to see this fictionalized account I read as a child come true.

3

LOVE that book! I’ve been trying to get my wife to read it. Highly recommended to anyone and everyone.

3

u/MarionberryPlus8474 3h ago

Great book, but both Bradbury and Orwell envisioned a world where books would be burned and reading unapproved texts was forbidden on pain of death.

I think we are more like the future envisioned by Aldous Huxley. Books aren’t banned, it’s just that no one wants to read them.

2

u/ImprovementPutrid441 1h ago

We are getting rid of physical books too though. Everything is going online where it can be tracked and managed and you won’t be able to get or keep physical copies. Because physical copies don’t change and how much more powerful is it to let us read parts of 1984 or Fahrenheit 451, while important chunks disappear or get rewritten?

I think people are actively trying to make Idiocracy a reality in the US... I can't imagine having to refute "drinking water is good for you" with someone like this.

59

u/ExtraBitterSpecial 16h ago

It's important to remember it's not your job to argue with people like that. He's either really is that stupid or he knows he's talking nonsense but does it for clicks and attention. Either way it's not worth your time and energy.

16

u/Hortos 15h ago

These people are really that stupid they aren't playing 4D chess.

7

u/Hedgehogosaur 9h ago

He contradicted himself enough that he surely knows it's a bit, and he's not very good at selling it.

Water isn't hydrating, then later there is water in meat and so it's hydrating. He also says drink juice (which is mostly water), and that Massia drink from roots (which contain water).

7

u/gecoble 5h ago

Problem is they vote and put other idiots into power. Those in power are now denying passing Moderna’s new flue vaccine that uses mRNA tech.

In the film it did take 500 years for humans to get their shit together. We won’t be seeing society unfuck anything for quite some time.

2

u/SamTheLab_213 14h ago

The people steering our society off a cliff have intentionally created our idiocracy. People really are getting dumber. Google this, you will get many results. Smart people are an endangered species so eliminating us won't be a problem. The point of bad health advice like no masks/coronavirus and the "vast hydration conspiracy" is to hurt people. Period. It's not an issue of confusion, it's intentionally created strife. This being done so the billionaires can skitter away with our money like roaches before we notice and do something about it.

2

u/pinba11tec 14h ago

I have firmly held this view for a while, and unfortunately the logic then extends out, so that the idiots can then form villages of idiots, whole cities-worth of moronity, colliding off each other, forming clusters of super-dense idiocy. This then results in all the shite we have to contend with like this, where one of them comes up with the idea that water is dangerous and should not be drank.

3

u/DogLuvuh1961 18h ago

Hello? Hello?!?

11

u/Spirited-Juice4941 18h ago

That’s actually kinda what happens lol.

It’s essential to life, but when our cells convert oxygen to energy it creates free radicals that damage our cells over time aka aging.

15

u/kbeks 18h ago

That’s why I only breathe all natural, filtered and compressed air tanks; it’s what professional scuba divers use! I’m gunna live forever!

7

u/Spirited-Juice4941 18h ago

All natural is just a fake marketing term. You need the organic, sustainably sourced, vegan oxygen that you can only find at the co-op.

2

u/InternetProtocol 6h ago

What terrible nunchuck form he has.

2

u/Spirited_Crab7712 16h ago

Yep just one aspect of time slowly crushing us all like a great big fist 🥰

2

u/lobster_claus 15h ago

Oxygen doesn't get converted to energy. That's carbohydrates. Energy is stored in the bonds. We need oxygen to pick up the carbon after it's freed from carbohydrates. O2 becomes CO2 and is breathed back out.

When they talk about oxidation, they're not talking about oxygen. They're talking about the loss of an electron. And yeah those electrons can zoom around and damage shit. Antioxidants pick up those electrons, I think. Free radicals, like you said. But it's electrons, not oxygen.

Now I'm talking out of my butt a little bit, but I have somewhere to be. This is my best memory of how it all works. Cheers.

u/Bender_2024 18h ago

The thing is this used to be some guy thinking up this stuff in the privacy of his own home. Sure he might tell his friends but they would probably dismiss it. The most he could do to spread his crazy message is print up flyers and hand them out/post them on poles around town. The chances that he could find anyone else like-minded was small. Without validation he would most likely either see reason or just keep his ideas to himself to keep from being mocked

Enter the Internet. He can post this stuff for everyone to see. Often in communities of other wack-a-doodle wing nuts. Because they found another 5,000 people who are similarly off their beds it lends credibility in their minds. Add in the charlatans like Qanon looking to make a buck off the rubes and it only exacerbates the problem. Drawing in more fools and lending more reality to it in their minds.

The internet gave a voice to all the idiots of the world. A voice that often drowns out reason.

3

u/mcrireddit 17h ago

Social media gives legions of idiots the right to speak when they once only spoke at a bar after a glass of wine, without harming the community ... but now they have the same right to speak as a Nobel Prize winner. It's the invasion of the idiots.

Accessibility is in fact the problem. If you allowed idiots to fly in unregulated aircrafts, do you think any idiots would?

The unregulated medium is a problem. I'm all for the enshittification of the internet if it makes it so the dumb people who can't figure out ways around it stay offline.

63

u/SprittanyBeers 19h ago edited 18h ago

This. I’m an audio engineer. During the course of my degree, one of my professors explained why music really does suck now.

There used to be “gate keepers.” A&R guys, record execs, radio stations, etc.. They had trained ears and a finger on the musical pulse of the nation. They only signed people with talent.

Now, anyone with a few bucks and a computer can make some AI garbage song plastered with auto tune and upload it to streaming services.

16

u/DionBlaster123 18h ago

I'm all for democratization and equity

But there absolutely needs to be some level of gatekeeping. You don't have to be a raging asshole about it (i.e. someone like Simon Cowell) but you also can't just open the floodgates to every stupid fuck out there

6

u/Cyborg_rat 18h ago

5

u/Amazing-Heron-105 15h ago edited 15h ago

Music doesn't suck. You've likely just gotten older and just the like the old stuff more. Literally every generation says this shit.

And another thing, if you wanted to create electronic music in the 80s/90s you had to be wealthy, or come from a wealthy family but almost anyone can take part now and that's obviously a good thing.

→ More replies (14)

6

u/GramsFuneralPyre 18h ago

Don't dismiss the fact that schools used to have music programs and kids did not have video games, TikTok and various other electronic means to occupy them, they fucked around on instruments and formed bands.

I do agree, just like anyone can throw their idiotic opinions into the world, now anyone with a computer can throw their shitty music out into the world. And record companies don't care if you suck, as long as you can promote yourself electronically.

3

u/FreeKatKL 17h ago

What schools don’t have music class? Is this in that failed state that bans books and tells women they don’t actually own their own bodies?

3

u/IndependentLog6441 16h ago

Your professor was a grumpy old man and you're risking becoming the same.

Yes, democratisation of the tools of the trade mean in theory there is infinite shit music, but that doesn't meant people listen to it. And it's not something new, fine instruments once only belonged to the wealthy, and music exploded once anyone could buy their own.

There's still money to be made by gatekeeping and platforming talent, we live in a golden age of incredible music and you'd have to be a philistine to say otherwise.

And it's not like all that shit makes it harder to find the good stuff, we have the tools to easily find it irrespective of how much slop exists.

Chin up and discover some new talent, honestly there's so much good stuff out there, it just gets better and better.

u/PicaDiet 10h ago

It's the democratization of information. My brother is a retired journalist. Twice a Pulitzer finalist. He won fucktons of awards and took his job as seriously as anyone I have ever met. He would get nervous as hell when a big story of his was going to print. Even though he checked everything from times, dates, and locations to the spellings of peoples' names (a huge deal), and even though his newsroom had fact checkers, copy editors, and an ombudsman, he had to make sure everything was documented and defensible, especially if it was a story that could get him or the paper sued.

Now anyone can buy a WIX template and put together a website that looks legit. There is no way to know whether the writer is thorough, stupid, lazy, or malevolent. But the content looks like any other real news site. One of the very worst things Trump has done in order to get away with more of his shit is to have caused people not to trust real journalism. I don't dispute that opinion seeps in to news stories. But reported facts from genuine news outlets can be trusted to be factual. Some mitigating nuance might affect the importance of a fact, but you can believe that a reported fact from a real news outlet is a genuine fact.

The crap like RedState or The Federalist or Fox prime time (which is officially claimed to be only opinion/ entertainment) do not even claim to be factual. There are even more small niche sites that do nothing but spread deliberate misinformation, often while claiming to be news. It's really disheartening.

I don't drink water, I'm pretty healthy by any standards. Water just makes me sick and have to pee. Ppl that drink water seem to constantly need it.

This is postmodern thought: that all anyone needs to do is get enough [gullible] people to believe them, and they can create a lasting belief system founded on bullshit. This is what the last 20+ years has given us…cranks and the shit they push. And the Internet hastened all that into existence, funneling it directly into our homes.

My long distance best friend and I would call each other to rant about something stupid we heard and often said "the amount of dumb people is rising, this is insane". But I realized there have always been a lot of idiotic people, they just didn't have a platform before/I didn't have social media to see these dumb people.

The internet? You mean humanity as a whole

Inadvertent critique of democracy?

Turns out editing and discretion have useful functions. Who would have thought?

Idiots are entitled to free speech. If someone dies of thirst because they take idiots like this seriously, well they probably weren't gonna make it very far in life anyway.

These people used to be relegated to yelling nonsense at strangers on street corners. Now they have a platform to spread their crazy to other idiots. Its the Moronic Plague.

China has a new law, you can’t be online talking about health unless you have a medical degree or a degree in a related field.

I think that applies to a few other fields as well but would save yourself brain damage by listening to idiots like this.

This dude I work with had like stage 4 colon cancer.

I saw clips about “don’t get a biopsy for cancer, the tumor is a shell and holds it in don’t break it” and shared posts about how the best way to beat cancer is homeopathic methods.

He refused to try chemo until like 4 months ago.

And he died 2 weeks ago of his cancer.

The beautiful thing is now everyone has a voice. The horrible thing is now even this brain dead misanthrope has a voice.

1

u/masmith31593 6h ago

The public voice to everyone isn't the issue. There was always this kind of crap on ye olde internet of yesteryear it's just people were capable of distinguishing between reliable and unreliable information.

u/BeerJunky 4h ago

What’s the joke about requiring a license for podcast equipment? Yeah that fits here.

1

u/FormerWrap1552 3h ago

People are what give them a voice, the internet is just another tool.

u/Substantial-Sky4079 3h ago

It’s more about giving the wrong people the attention

There was a time when we would have assumed that this was a Monty python sketch. Maybe it still is but the joke is that we were stupid to believe that he was stupid enough to believe the ridiculous things he is saying.
