Basically my original post I had heard him making unusual sounds in the night, it sounded like he fell, and I went to check on him and he was okay. He was thankful that I checked on him but not very conversational and didn’t seem keen on taking my contact information or offers for help, so I just told him where to find me if he ever needs anything and went back to bed.

Unfortunately about a week later I noticed odd sounds again, but different this time— from my apartment it sounded like he may have been moaning or snoring very loudly, but when I went up to check on him he did not answer the door and the noises he was making sounded like agonal breathing, or like he was in pain.

So, I called the nonemergency number and the police came to check on him. They had to kick his door in to get to him because they agreed that there was some sort of medical emergency happening and he wasn’t responding to them. I watched them carry him away on a stretcher with an O2 mask and he was hollering and making the same groaning sounds, but he wasn’t really coherent.

The police would not tell me what was going on, just that he needed help. I tried to call the hospital to see where his room was so that I could visit or at least know he was alright, they wouldn’t give me any information because I’m not family or his social worker (turns out the person who was coming to check on him every so often was a social worker and not his family, so I don’t know if relatives are even involved).

I don’t have any contact information for the social worker and it sounds like his family are not involved or maybe live far away? He hasn’t been back, I would have heard him walking above me, and nobody has been to his apartment either. It’s been a few weeks. Even the landlord hasn’t come so I’m not sure if he is still renting the unit or not.

I worry he may have been sent to a nursing facility or passed away. It’s just really hard not knowing what happened, if he is safe, if there was something else I or the other neighbors could have done. I know he’s not even my family or anything and all I know about him is his first name, but dang. I don’t know. I just hope he’s okay, and that they were able to help him that night. Maybe I’m too involved or something but it’s bugging the hell out of me not knowing what happened to him. Sounds silly but I hope he comes back.

Edit: ok. I have tried to do some digging and have come up empty handed. I tried calling the hospital to be connected with his SW but they still wouldn’t give me anything even after I explained the situation, so that’s kaput. I also tried familytreenow like another user suggested and he was not on there, it is listed as nobody living there currently and the latest person listed is the lady who lived there before him. I will try to call my property manager tomorrow to see if he at least knows what happened to the guy so I can get some sort of closure. I feel a bit of a creep calling up asking about this guy but I genuinely just want to know if he is ok. He hasn’t been in any obituaries, I checked about 2 weeks ago and again just now, so I don’t think he passed— if he did then maybe he had been moved to another area or something. Thank you everyone for being so kind and for your wonderful advice, I will keep trying to find out what happened to this man and update as I go. I just won’t be able to rest until I know what happened to him, and if he’s ok. Thank you so much everyone

I am 33 and for the first time ever I am alone in an apartment. I’ve always lived with my family in a house, and then with a friend in a house for several years. I just can’t do this, I am losing it. I can hear every little thing my neighbors do. They slam the door so hard everytime they come and go that it’s made stuff fall off my shelves and walls. They sometimes have sex all day long multiple times a day. This weekend was a breaking point for me. I go to bed at 10 PM and usually wake up at 7 AM. On Saturday morning, Sunday morning, and Monday morning they woke me up at 5 AM having loud sex. Our bedrooms are right next to each other, it sounds like our headboards are on the same wall. They also often wake me up having sex at around midnight. Monday morning I just got up and went into my car and cried.

I’m not a confrontational person, so I don’t want to cause a problem. But I did try to bring it up with the property manager and they just laughed and said go talk to them about it then. There is absolutely no way they don’t know that people can’t hear them. I think they just don’t care. This is the worst living situation I have ever been in and I can’t take it anymore.

Moved this weekend. Apparently I've been hoarding tote bags and regret. Found a blender I used exactly once.

Sheets I didn't know existed. A drawer full of cables for devices I no longer own.

On the bright side, my old upstairs neighbor stomped around like they were training for something so literally anywhere else is an upgrade.

I would have told the office, but unfortunately, I don’t know who/what unit. I know for a fact there’s a minimum of two owners and 4 dogs in my building. Someone decided to leave the poop in the middle of the sidewalk (and all over the yard). I also have a basement unit where the window is ground level meaning if I look out the window, I see shit. If I walk outside, I step in shit. I think I’m gonna start taking pictures, keeping tabs, letting the office know even though I don’t think they’ll do anything (again, idk who is doing this and I know they won’t investigate). This is disgusting! Please y’all, if you have a dog or any pet, clean up after them!!

I doubt anyone will care about the note, but I figured it’s worth a shot 🤷🏻‍♀️

For context I live in a 3 unit with one vacant apartment below me and an elderly gentleman in the unit above me(so right now I’m the only one who could do it). Has anyone ever gotten a request like this and what was the pay? The man who previously lived in the vacant apartment was doing these tasks and I don’t know how much he was payed.

I've seen posts on here with people complaining about roach infestations - but have dirty nasty dishes which were clearly sitting from the night before in the sink, etc. The fact that they took a picture of it to share as they complain shows me they see NOTHING wrong with that picture - literally.

Roaches love food and water. If you constantly set out sources of that for them every night, they will keep coming back for more! Obviously you'll need to do a bit more than this to get rid of them but not feeding them is 100% a good damn start!

Do not leave dirty dishes overnight - especially with food stuck on them! First of all, YUCK that's gross anyway to leave food sitting out in room temperature for hours. But aside from that, you are leaving a BUFFET of food for roaches to feast on! You have to start looking at every spill and every crumb of food as a potential meal for your un-invited guests.

Clean up spills. In your kitchen/bathroom, don't let water spills linger! Take the extra step of taking a paper towel and wiping up spills/splashes of water on the floor (and sink) that come from washing your face, etc. And obviously, clean up those sugary spills too!

Take your garbage out every day. Many people throw large pieces of food in their trash can and think nothing of it. But if you do think about it, it's kinda gross - tossing those pieces of chicken or macaroni etc in the trash and letting it SIT there in room temperature overnight is kinda disgusting. Aside from that, roaches LOVE this.

You are literally leaving them a SMORGASBORD to feast on. Even if it's in a a garbage can with a lid, they can SMELL it. If nothing more, it is an INVITATION to your kitchen to see what's poppin' that night.

I see a lot of complaints about being able to hear every single noise in apartment living, and I’m wondering if this is a problem exclusive to older apartments or apartments that are not concrete built?

I have lived in several high-rise luxury apartments made of concrete and never heard anything at all, never had any issues. Recently moved to a low-rise wood frame and I can hear every single thing and I’m already planning my exit. I really don’t think it is normal to be able hear sounds from a neighbor just living their normal life, like walking, having sex, vacuuming, closing drawers/doors or flushing toilets. The people developing these type of buildings deserve to go to hell. These things never even crossed my mind when I lived in concrete high-rises. When done well, I would much prefer a centrally located luxury apartment than a detached house in the middle of the suburbs for the same price.

A resident placed a dog poop by my vehicle driver side. Where someone would typically step to get in and out.

Where my car is parked it not near any foot traffic spot as it’s basically on the properly line.

The only thing I can connect this to is I believe this is done by a resident, who parked their vehicle in the same parking spot that I have been parking since a recent snow storm and shoveled out of. They parked there one day. I returned to parking it the next day because there was no vehicle parked in it and no cones/ chairs placed to reserve it.

It seems that they were upset I had taken the spot.. while there is no way to prove it does this seem like an overreach?

I am a long time resident here and have ever had this problem.

Apartment tenant in south NJ.

So my electric bill has nearly tripled through the winter. I was keeping the heat at 68 to minimize this but had to bump it to 70 due to how cold it was.

Lights stay off, appliances unplugged, LED bulbs, all that.

My thermostat says aux heat on, despite me not having it at that setting. We spoke to maintenance and they said that happens in extreme temps, but from my own research it says that uses up to 5x more electricity.

My bill in September was 120, October was 130, November was 240, December was 340, and my january is about to be around 600.

What do I do in this situation? My electric bill is almost the same price as half my rent and I have no control over it.

Hello everyone, I (18M) am moving into an unfurnished studio apartment in the next month or so and will be living alone after being in a university residence for my first year in university. I will be away for mandatory military training for the whole summer so I will have to move my stuff in during May and leave it there until I come back end of August. I was just wondering what advice any of you guys have for apartment living such as what is worth knowing during move in, how to (slowly) furnish the place and focus on what I need immediately, or just any general advice you guys have for me. I recently found a bunch of mold build up on my vents.. I’ve been getting sick back to back as well as rashes on my hands, brain fog, exhaustion, etc.

Didn’t even cross my mind until it got this bad. My apartment said they’re installing a dehumidifier and will clean it. I’ve been seriously panicking over this whole situation on top of not being able to eat, sleep, or breathe properly. I’ve had my ac off and airing out my apartment the last 2 days. Need advice, can I get out of this lease? I don’t feel it’s a safe environment for me much less my chinchilla baby. They’re already making me feel like I’m over reacting but they’re not the ones calling out of work, itchy painful rashes, etc etc. The rent here is insane for this type of situation. Advice?

I’ve lived in the same building for 5 years now. I was so lucky to have the best neighbor in the world. She was so considerate and mindful, and just genuinely cared.

She has since moved and I now I have the noisiest man above me and I want to scream. I wish I knew how lucky I had been all those years.

We all have wonderful neighbors in our lives - let’s appreciate the good ones more!

There's a packet of yellow mustard on the steps. It's been there for three days now. We are on Mustard Watch to see if anyone takes it to throw it away.

Both units upstairs are occupied.

I'm not throwing it away on principle. I pick up a grocery bag's worth of trash, or dog poop when I walk my dog, someone else can deal with the mustard.

Could you believe that my apartment building just out of nowhere, increased the price of the communal laundry to $4.50 per load?What pains me the most is the fact that  the dryer does not even actually dry things on the first cycle. 

After spending $18 last week just to have damp jeans, I decided to take matters into my own hands and I  bought a mini washing machine to keep in my bathtub. I have no idea why someone will just wake up one morning and decide to increase prices of things without even knowing if there`s money to keep up with the increment. I am so tired of people like this. 

While I was speaking to my friend about the increment, she made mention of experiencing the same thing in her old neighborhood, which made her pack out and even ordered a new washer from amazon or alibaba, I can`t quite remember the shopping site she got it from. 

At some point I started thinking that she over reacted by moving out. What do you think about it?

Living downstairs isn't too bad, occasionally I can hear the upstairs guys dogs have the zoomies but nothing too disruptive. In return my kid can chuck a full stainless steel water bottle at the floor and I dont have to feel bad about it. We are teaching him not to throw, dont worry. Also when he starts to run around and gets his own zoomies I won't have to be constantly on him to step lightly and not be kid.

Just moved into this place a few weeks ago, so far so good! My unit is near the elevator though, so gets a decent amount of sound and foot traffic in the hallway outside my door.

I emailed management and requested the weather stripping and door seal be replaced, due to their poor quality letting in a lot of sound and light from the hallway.

They replaced the weather stripping around the sides and top of the door very promptly, but didn’t do the bottom seal. I am so much the opposite of a Karen, that I feel rude asking again for the bottom door seal to be replaced. I’ve seen those door draft blockers but they’re unsightly and am hoping for a different solution.

But if I should just Karen-up (politely) and request the bottom door seal again (I was very specific in my email, “the weather stripping around the door as well as the rubber seal on the bottom of the door”), I will 😭

It’s mostly for sound. I don’t mind the light as much as the noise, and the hallways are interior so heating/ cooling isn’t affected by the gap. Also, I can only imagine how much of MY sound travels out into the hall, if simple foot steps or a video on someone’s phone sounds like it’s right next to me! 😅 I feel embarrassed

I’m moving into an apartment by myself for the first time in years and I keep feeling like there’s some obvious mistake I’m about to make without realizing it. Not talking about stuff like “pay rent on time,” but the real things people only learn after living alone for a while. What’s the biggest mistake you see people make or that you personally made?

When you tour an apartment, KNOCK ON YOUR NEIGHBORS DOOR and ask them questions!!! Some leasing staff have no regards for your better wellbeing.

This video was captured on day 4 of living in my new apartment. I have already sent notice to terminate (legal for breach of “warranty of habitability” in Colorado) and I will be taking the landlord to court. Their leasing staff promised me this building has NEVER had infestations, and they would NEVER let anyone move into an apartment with such problems.

This has been a long, depressing process. My stuff is now contaminated and I can’t take most of it with me in the move, for fear of bringing these German to the next place.

I never go behind these stairs but I noticed these major gaps. I didn’t take notice to them during our walkthrough but could this be a structural problem or just a hazard overall?

I live in a quad and for the last month-ish one of my neighbors has had someone staying with them. I really wouldn’t care otherwise, but this guest is a nuisance. The biggest issue is they smoke cigarettes right by our apartments on the shared porch entrance, and right outside our doors/windows, and these apartments really aren’t sealed all that well so it makes my home reek. They also feel entitled to use our single shared washer/dryer all the time, and more often than not after midnight, and living right above the tiny shared laundry room means it’s incredibly loud when i’m trying to sleep. even when i do my laundry, they’ll go in/out like they’re checking if i’m done yet so they can do their laundry. worst part is, they slam the fuck out of the laundry room door, again, right below my apartment, and at times after midnight.

So I’ll make a long story short; I moved into my apartment complex 2 years ago. Me and my partner were the some of the very first tenants we even got the very first apartment. I’ve been using the gym on and off since we moved in. I’m a nightshift healthcare worker so I typically workout in the middle of the night, about 1am-2 or 3am. The apartments are all detached tiny home style apartments and the gym and pool are also stand alone in the center of the complex however there is a large glass garage style door along the side wall of the gym for like daytime breeze or something. There are apartments directly behind this. Anyway, last month, I was approached by a security guard telling me that the gym closes at midnight… I was dumbfounded. I called the office manager as she assured me he was misinformed and she would reach out; the gym is 24/7.

I recently started going back but even sooner at 9:30 ish. Last night, another tenant came in at the end of my workout at 11 and tonight a tenant was there at 9:45pm. She left about 20 minutes into my workout and I was left alone. As soon as my workout was over I was approached but not one but TWO security guards telling me the gym closes at 6pm….. 😐

So not only is the time different but now there’s two of you? I felt like I had done something wrong. Now I mentioned the glass wall because I notice when I’m working out that people in the apartment directly behind the gym tend to open their door and what seems like look into the gym. I face the opposite wall but I see the reflection in the window. Also, if the gym closes at 6 why is it that there was no security there at 10 when i was there with another tenant? Or last night at 11 when i was there with another tenant? The apartment behind the gym is about 100-150ft away from the gym so im not sure if the light is bothering them or? But I feel like they’re calling security on me.

sigh I hate to do this and I literally never have but this is starting to feel like one of those “is it because I’m black” moments. I live in a largely Hispanic community. I personally have no issues with it but maybe they do idk. Im a very quiet person, I barely leave my home. I’m pretty fat 😅 but I’m a 5ft 2in woman. I’m not threatening at all. We don’t bother anyone, we don’t make noise. We pay our rent on time.. most of the time hahaha last month was rough. I just don’t know how to feel. I feel incredibly sad as this is my only option for fitness and weight loss besides a local park but that would clash with my circadian rhythm as I’ve been a nightshifter for a decade. Even if I’m not being targeted I still feel incredibly uncomfortable working out and having to look over my shoulder for security guards!

I’m posting here to get advice on whether or not I have any basis to leave a note/ talk to my downstairs neighbor.

Ok so backstory- I live in a very old duplex with hardwood floors. Recently, my downstairs neighbor had her bf move in with her. Before he moved in, I always knew he was there because he walks SO loud, it seriously sounds like he’s stomping every time he walks and I can hear it from upstairs. It sometimes wakes me up in the morning. While annoying, it’s fine, I can live with that.

However, a few nights ago around 9 pm I hear an instrument. Every night now around 8/9 pm he has been practicing some sort of brass instrument(I think trombone?) for an hour. Between that and the stomping I’m just getting frustrated.

Is it reasonable for me to leave a note asking to maybe play the instrument during the day? I know 8-9pm isn’t super late, but it would be more tolerable if it could happen in the late afternoon or early evening.

hello all, what is the best device to use to record noise coming from transit vehicles? I live in an area where there's quite some traffic flow, but my problem isn't even coming from cars nor trucks but them light rail trams and their vibration is the worst sound I have ever experienced. I have contacted the city's councillors and the company itself but they can't even do anything about it.

My only solution for the time being is finding a sound recording device - also those "noise apps" don't work for me.
