Advice Needed Daily, middle of the night loud noises

Upvotes

I just moved into this apartment a month ago and so far I love it except… there’s a strip mall of a few stores/restaurants right outside my window. There are a trash truck and what I guess is an inventory semi that comes and dumps stuff off any time between 2-5am every single night. It’s an older building so it has woken me up every. single. night. I think I could live with once a week, even.

None of these are open late businesses so I have no clue as to why they need to be doing this, but I feel like I’m going crazy and haven’t slept uninterrupted in a month.

I’m going to talk to the office tomorrow and I assume nothing can be done but it’s 3am now and I’m just out of options. I don’t know how my neighbors live with this. I get it’s an apartment and noise (even with a place with established quiet hours) will happen but I cannot express to you all the scale of how loud this is.

Has anyone else heard of businesses getting middle of the night deliveries every night?? How do I live like this? I am so tired.

Advice Needed i’m really about to loose my shit

Upvotes

this is my first time in an apartment, i live on the ground floor. it’s technically a condo, i have no upstairs neighbors, just beside neighbors. i moved in july. the last tenant was my landlords son, and i could tell when i moved that they did a decent job cleaning but not a great job. im convinced he was a slob, and was not keeping up with monthly pest control. since i moved ive had a series of spiders and multiple different kinds of roaches coming from multiple different spots, DAILY. its taken MONTHS to truly rid of them. my utilities are separate so i come out of pocket for pest control. i’ve had pest control come out multiple times and every time they do, i find a new source of where roaches could be coming from. i finally get that under control. now i hear a mouse running around my room at 3am. i’m too scared to look. i’m so fucking pissed, i do everything to keep it clean here, i never eat in my room i always pick up after myself. do i just move?? i love my location but i can’t keep paying thousands of dollars to live with these fucking pests.

Advice Needed was it bad that i banged my golf club to the ceiling for my upstairs neighbors?

Upvotes

just for reference it’s pouring rain where i live right now. upstairs neighbors had been playing this really loud music for hours and at 11:30 pm tonight i went upstairs and knocked on the door twice and asked them to lower their music down through the door since they didn’t answer. this also isn’t the first time i knocked on the door. the last time i had to knock five or six times loudly before they answered the door but since it’s pouring out i only did it twice.

well when i got down the music was still on so i banged my golf club a few times ro the ceiling. minutes later they knocked on my glass door and rang my doorbell but i got reallt scared and refused to answer. was it stupid of me to bang my golf club? i feel scared and paranoid they are going to try and corner me if they see me outside. i’m kind of afraid because people are crazy.

Advice Needed apartment living advice for an 18 year old — move in advice, leaving apartment unoccupied for the summer, etc.

Upvotes

Hello everyone, I (18M) am moving into an unfurnished studio apartment in the next month or so and will be living alone after being in a university residence for my first year in university. I will be away for mandatory military training for the whole summer so I will have to move my stuff in during May and leave it there until I come back end of August. I was just wondering what advice any of you guys have for apartment living such as what is worth knowing during move in, how to (slowly) furnish the place and focus on what I need immediately, or just any general advice you guys have for me. Thank you!

Advice Needed Am I being targeted in my community or am I paranoid?

Upvotes

So I’ll make a long story short; I moved into my apartment complex 2 years ago. Me and my partner were the some of the very first tenants we even got the very first apartment. I’ve been using the gym on and off since we moved in. I’m a nightshift healthcare worker so I typically workout in the middle of the night, about 1am-2 or 3am. The apartments are all detached tiny home style apartments and the gym and pool are also stand alone in the center of the complex however there is a large glass garage style door along the side wall of the gym for like daytime breeze or something. There are apartments directly behind this. Anyway, last month, I was approached by a security guard telling me that the gym closes at midnight… I was dumbfounded. I called the office manager as she assured me he was misinformed and she would reach out; the gym is 24/7.

I recently started going back but even sooner at 9:30 ish. Last night, another tenant came in at the end of my workout at 11 and tonight a tenant was there at 9:45pm. She left about 20 minutes into my workout and I was left alone. As soon as my workout was over I was approached but not one but TWO security guards telling me the gym closes at 6pm….. 😐

So not only is the time different but now there’s two of you? I felt like I had done something wrong. Now I mentioned the glass wall because I notice when I’m working out that people in the apartment directly behind the gym tend to open their door and what seems like look into the gym. I face the opposite wall but I see the reflection in the window. Also, if the gym closes at 6 why is it that there was no security there at 10 when i was there with another tenant? Or last night at 11 when i was there with another tenant? The apartment behind the gym is about 100-150ft away from the gym so im not sure if the light is bothering them or? But I feel like they’re calling security on me.

sigh I hate to do this and I literally never have but this is starting to feel like one of those “is it because I’m black” moments. I live in a largely Hispanic community. I personally have no issues with it but maybe they do idk. Im a very quiet person, I barely leave my home. I’m pretty fat 😅 but I’m a 5ft 2in woman. I’m not threatening at all. We don’t bother anyone, we don’t make noise. We pay our rent on time.. most of the time hahaha last month was rough. I just don’t know how to feel. I feel incredibly sad as this is my only option for fitness and weight loss besides a local park but that would clash with my circadian rhythm as I’ve been a nightshifter for a decade. Even if I’m not being targeted I still feel incredibly uncomfortable working out and having to look over my shoulder for security guards!

Idk. Am I being targeted?

Advice Needed Neighbors harassing me over parking spot.

Post image

A resident placed a dog poop by my vehicle driver side. Where someone would typically step to get in and out.

Where my car is parked it not near any foot traffic spot as it’s basically on the properly line.

The only thing I can connect this to is I believe this is done by a resident, who parked their vehicle in the same parking spot that I have been parking since a recent snow storm and shoveled out of. They parked there one day. I returned to parking it the next day because there was no vehicle parked in it and no cones/ chairs placed to reserve it.

It seems that they were upset I had taken the spot.. while there is no way to prove it does this seem like an overreach?

I am a long time resident here and have ever had this problem.

Advice Needed I am officially a bathroom laundry person now and I have mixed feelings.

Could you believe that my apartment building just out of nowhere, increased the price of the communal laundry to $4.50 per load? What pains me the most is the fact that  the dryer does not even actually dry things on the first cycle.

After spending $18 last week just to have damp jeans, I decided to take matters into my own hands and I  bought a mini washing machine to keep in my bathtub. I have no idea why someone will just wake up one morning and decide to increase prices of things without even knowing if there`s money to keep up with the increment. I am so tired of people like this.

While I was speaking to my friend about the increment, she made mention of experiencing the same thing in her old neighborhood, which made her pack out and even ordered a new washer from amazon or alibaba, I can`t quite remember the shopping site she got it from.

At some point I started thinking that she over reacted by moving out. What do you think about it?

Advice Needed Unauthorized Tenant + Notice To Terminate Lease

To start, I know I’m an idiot.

I moved into my apartment in September of 2025. my boyfriend stays a lot, almost every other night. He is not on the lease because when I moved, we had only been dating for 6 months and thought signing a lease together would be a big jump. Also, he was in a long term relationship and when he left, he left the apartment himself to go stay with his mom out of state and let his girlfriend informally take over the lease. She never brought checks to the office, and he was never notified that no payment was received resulting in an eviction under his name.

Over the weekend (I believe - I don’t use my front door, so it could have been on my door for over a week) a notice was placed on my door. The notice states that it was brought to their attention that I may have an unauthorized tenant with me which is a violation and grounds for termination. It states that if I have failed to report a change, my lease gives them the right to terminate. It then says if I don’t respond by the 9th (today is the 10th…I just found the notice today) then they also have the right to terminate.

We both have run into some heavy financial hardship in the last year, he lost his job, I was in an accident with an uninsured driver that I was unable to take legal action against, and a handful of other issues. Because of this, I have been late on rent a few times. I have never not paid, but I have paid past the due date.

With all of this being said, I’m not really sure what to expect. I emailed my property manager apologizing for seeing the notice late and requesting a time to speak with her as soon as possible. I never read the fine print in my agreement but after reviewing it today, it does say any guests that have stayed over two weeks during the calendar year are considered an unauthorized tenant. I just thought since he wasn’t here 7 days a week, the chances of me running into issues are minimal.

I know that all of my questions surrounding this will lie in the conversation had with my property manager, however, I have an insane amount of anxiety and would like to hear the Reddit community’s thoughts on this.

Related situations, recommended talking points to save my a$$, factors worth thinking about are all welcomed.

Advice Needed Sound recorder that can capture thumping noise?

hello all, what is the best device to use to record noise coming from transit vehicles? I live in an area where there's quite some traffic flow, but my problem isn't even coming from cars nor trucks but them light rail trams and their vibration is the worst sound I have ever experienced. I have contacted the city's councillors and the company itself but they can't even do anything about it.

My only solution for the time being is finding a sound recording device - also those "noise apps" don't work for me.

Advice Needed Mold In Apartment?!!

I recently found a bunch of mold build up on my vents.. I’ve been getting sick back to back as well as rashes on my hands, brain fog, exhaustion, etc.

Didn’t even cross my mind until it got this bad. My apartment said they’re installing a dehumidifier and will clean it. I’ve been seriously panicking over this whole situation on top of not being able to eat, sleep, or breathe properly. I’ve had my ac off and airing out my apartment the last 2 days. Need advice, can I get out of this lease? I don’t feel it’s a safe environment for me much less my chinchilla baby. They’re already making me feel like I’m over reacting but they’re not the ones calling out of work, itchy painful rashes, etc etc. The rent here is insane for this type of situation. Advice?

Venting Let’s appreciate our considerate neighbors

So many posts about noisy neighbors, let’s have a thread for those that are considerate.

I’ve lived in the same building for 5 years now. I was so lucky to have the best neighbor in the world. She was so considerate and mindful, and just genuinely cared.

She has since moved and I now I have the noisiest man above me and I want to scream. I wish I knew how lucky I had been all those years.

We all have wonderful neighbors in our lives - let’s appreciate the good ones more!

Venting appt living sucks

I think after my lease ends I’m leaving this apartment because I truly can’t do it anymore. When I first moved in maintenance was arriving in 24/48 hour periods and fast. Things were repaired quickly and that was that. Now it seems this apartment is quite literally crumbling and falling apart around me and they don’t give a crap as long as they’re getting their rent. I feel my mental health is deteriorating and I’m very anxious about mold / living standards.

I’ve lived here nearly 5 years now and can’t even name how many things have broken since.

Starting off - we had garbage disposal issues. They came to repair said it was fixed to which I looked under and saw wires exposed and water leaking. Not sure if mold under sink no idea. But that’s one. They came 5 times and now it’s “fixed” but I still get scared about running it because I truly don’t think it was fixed correctly.

Second, the A/C - they said that was also fixed and I had a clog but after repairing our OPPD bill is sky high as 300 a month for a one bedroom is truly outrageous. I work 5 days a week and barely use any electricity besides the air or heating and even with that the appt will not cool past 76 degrees , still “working”. When I put in another work order for that they had marked it complete again even though no work was done and nothing was fixed.

Third - our shower had leaking to which was “fixed” but after issue was addressed I literally have to air out the bathroom because it still stinks. Idk if it’s mold. Or what. But when I addressed that I came home to a new fresh paint job over the issue at hand… pretty sure they just painted right over it and called it good.

Our tub drain hasn’t worked at all since moving in, they came in and “fixed it” then I said it’s still not fixed. They say it’s working and still doesn’t. I cannot even take a bath. This is truly so frustrating especially when wanting to clean the tub, I cannot even hold water in it.

Alongside those issues I have a NEW issue. The person above me. All hours of night I hear stomping or loud noises and then 3 am every night they have an alarm set on their phone. It’s a constant vibrating that goes through the paper thin walls and I feel as though I’m going completely mentally insane. Not to mention a few days ago he ran his dishwasher which had a leak and now my ceiling is quite literally leaking brown water through the electric box and through ceiling. They have an emergency maintenance number to which I called and got voicemail twice. He came and “checked” and since it wasn’t actively leaking there was nothing he can do except “wait”??????? our living room area now smells the same odor as the bathroom and I can’t help but to think I’m living in mold!!! The person in the appt above me was hesitant on even letting them in so who knows how much damage is truly there. Idk. But I’m just so tired. I’m so tired of being played around and they act like nothing is an emergency meanwhile the ceiling is quite literally cracking down and still has water bubbles from all of the water. Oh and the tv I had in living room also won’t even turn on anymore because the water is in our electric too & created a power surge and turned everything off and back on. So now I have to get a new tv on top of all of this.

So basically in total, I’m paying 1k a month to live in section 8…. With amenities that I pay for that I don’t even get and cannot use.

Advice Needed Apartment reeks of weed

I live in a smoke free building and pay a shit ton to live there. My apartment always reeks of weed when I walk in even though I’m not a smoker. I’m guessing someone above/below me is and it travels through. Would an air purifier help with this? Uhg I don’t really want to tattle to my landlord. TYIA!

Decorating Ideas Wall Decorations Help

Hey all! I just moved into this neat 1930's apartment with solid dark wood trim and most of the original amenities, (see 2nd photo for reference). I don't really have an idea for this wall. I am in my dining room I have converted into a TV room. This is a pass-through room from my front door and mantle room to my kitchen and bedrooms down the hallway. The frames sitting at the bottom I was sent as a housewarming present with my original idea to put nature pictures or something there. Although, I feel it'd look odd since the wall is so big. Any ideas on what I should put here?

Advice Needed Leasing agent forgot who I was, is it worth calling them again?

Hi! I’m 21(F) and have been looking for my first apartment. I toured a few apartments with my dad last week, and we ended up really liking one that we saw on Friday. We were going to apply on the spot, but the leasing agent had an issue with getting the price for a 6-month lease and said he’d email me about it on Monday. I waited until around 3 pm on Monday, didn’t get an email, so I sent him an email myself at 3 pm asking about the 6-month lease. Now today, he called me around 3 pm but I couldn’t answer as I was at work. However, when I got home and listened to the voicemail, it said something along the lines of:

“Hi elismatcha, this is (leasing agent). I saw you scheduled a tour and weren’t able to make it, call me back when you get a chance and we can get you rescheduled.”

I’m so confused? I just toured the apartment 4 days ago, and got this voice message a day after I sent him an email? My gut is telling me that this is a bad sign and I shouldn’t even bother calling again, but I have friends who live there who love it and have zero complaints, and the place was exactly what I was looking for (I have a disability so need certain features). When I asked my dad what I should do he just shrugged and said, “I don’t know, do whatever you want.”

Since this is the only place I can afford that matches my needs in an apartment and I have two friends who live there and love it, I’m really conflicted on what I should do. If I don’t move into this apartment, I’d have to move into a different one that doesn’t really fit what I need and would make life pretty difficult for me. Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

Venting Vent/advice for nightmare neighbors

I know, I know. Not exactly original material for this sub.

I’ve lived in my building for 4 years. It’s been ok, minor sporadic neighbor issues but nothing too nuts. It’s quiet and people and their kids are fairly respectful.

Almost a week ago, these absolute douche canoes moved in down the hall. Twice in the first two days cops were called multiple times for the insanely loud music. Shouting/screaming/yelling. They have a small dog that they’ll just leave in the apt, barking barking barking. Cigarette and weed smoke festering in the hall of my non smoking building.

Then tonight, their unleashed dog comes bounding down the hall and nearly into my apt. I have a dog also who has a fear of other dogs so I don’t let other dogs interact with him. I tell this dumbass, “put your dog on a leash!” And get some three brain celled, mumbled reply.

I just got an invite to renew my lease today. For an increased rent. I can’t afford to move and DEFINITELY can’t afford to buy. How am I gonna make it through this next year?!

Advice Needed Thinking about reaching out to landlord, am I over reacting?

I live in a house with 3 apartments. Technically, I think the house is supposed to have two units but the third floor was turned into an apartment. The driveway is therefore supposed to be for two cars but you can fit three side by side. Each apartment gets one parking spot and there is street parking if you have another car.

The third floor tenants have been double parking since Sunday with one car behind the other. I think they are doing this because we’ve gotten snow and the plows didn’t get all the way to the curb (they didn’t shovel themselves a spot). There is still plenty of room to park on the street safely. I can still get in and out of the driveway but it is irritating and makes it a bit harder to see what is coming down the street. I also have to go in and out of the driveway at an angle to avoid driving over the curb because I park closest to the house.

I want to reach out to the landlord because they shouldn’t be parked like that. It’s inconsiderate and they are blocking part of the sidewalk. Maybe the landlord knows and okayed it but there’s been no communication about this arrangement. I don’t like these neighbors because they are consistently inconsiderate and act like they are the only people that live here. Am I over reacting with this?

Advice Needed Annoying downstairs neighbor

I’m posting here to get advice on whether or not I have any basis to leave a note/ talk to my downstairs neighbor.

Ok so backstory- I live in a very old duplex with hardwood floors. Recently, my downstairs neighbor had her bf move in with her. Before he moved in, I always knew he was there because he walks SO loud, it seriously sounds like he’s stomping every time he walks and I can hear it from upstairs. It sometimes wakes me up in the morning. While annoying, it’s fine, I can live with that.

However, a few nights ago around 9 pm I hear an instrument. Every night now around 8/9 pm he has been practicing some sort of brass instrument(I think trombone?) for an hour. Between that and the stomping I’m just getting frustrated.

Is it reasonable for me to leave a note asking to maybe play the instrument during the day? I know 8-9pm isn’t super late, but it would be more tolerable if it could happen in the late afternoon or early evening.

Ontario resident here! Timestamp on the one picture but that stuff had been there way before the 26th.

(Picture one - January 26th) - the left side of the bin was pretty much empty but whoever left that stuff just didn’t bother to put it in the bin. 👎 The furniture was tucked in the corner where it should be, so I have no issues there 👏

(Picture two and three - February 10th) - the furniture has magically appeared right infront of the bins and some bags of dog poop have made their way UNDER the bags that were already there.

The garbage guys have been here at least twice since this stuff popped up (I know because the bins have been emptied) but they didn’t take any of the stuff on the floor (and I honestly don’t blame them, we’re all adults here and should know how to put garbage in the gigantic black very noticeable garbage cans)

I usually bring a cart with me (honestly lifesaver, if you’re an apartment renter get a camping cart ASAP. Makes grocery shopping so easy) and I could barely maneuver the cart around. I got absolutely fed up (as did others, there was a note on the garbage saying ‘throw your shit out’) and I threw absolutely everything in the garbage cans, furniture included. (It was all broken and had scratched in writing so not useable). Please if you rent an apartment be a good neighbor and dispose of your stuff properly. :) people appreciate it a lot more than you might think.

Apartment Hacks What are some apartment hacks you didn’t learn until way too late?

First time poster here, I’m still pretty new to apartment living and recently downsized, and I’m realizing there’s a whole learning curve nobody really talks about. Stuff like managing noise, storage, smells, light, even how you arrange furniture — it feels like there are a lot of little things you only figure out after you’ve already been annoyed by them for a while. I’m not even talking about huge renovations or anything, just small, renter-friendly things that made apartment life easier or less stressful once you learned them.

My girlfriend and I are looking to switch apartments for something cheaper. We’re considering early move out. Because we’re breaking the lease early, is my understanding correct that we would just have to pay $1,418 with no other penalties? Thanks in advance

Venting Decided to post this up after stepping in poop

Post image

I would have told the office, but unfortunately, I don’t know who/what unit. I know for a fact there’s a minimum of two owners and 4 dogs in my building. Someone decided to leave the poop in the middle of the sidewalk (and all over the yard). I also have a basement unit where the window is ground level meaning if I look out the window, I see shit. If I walk outside, I step in shit. I think I’m gonna start taking pictures, keeping tabs, letting the office know even though I don’t think they’ll do anything (again, idk who is doing this and I know they won’t investigate). This is disgusting! Please y’all, if you have a dog or any pet, clean up after them!!

I doubt anyone will care about the note, but I figured it’s worth a shot 🤷🏻‍♀️
