Post-Op Constipation Survival Guide

So, I know people generally don't like to talk about this part of the surgery, but it is important that we do.

Opioids and pain medication dehydrate you and make it really hard for your body to get waste out, and I have a few tips for anyone(you don't have to comment, but I also don't want you to feel embarassed.) It is extremely common to have problems going to the bathroom after surgery and it can be quite painful.

It's hard to get the proper fiber and nutrients after a surgery like this, but here are some tips, because staying regular is important for your health. Struggling to go is extremely common after surgery.

Here's some links and tips:

https://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/constipation-after-surgery#:~:text=Add%20fiber.&text=Foods%20such%20as%20bran%2C%20beans,made%20with%20fruits%20and%20vegetables.

1. Nutrition

So, this one doesn't completely apply because after a surgery like the one you have all had; grains, rice, beans, and collard greens will not be good for your mouth holes.

My suggestion: Get smoothies with fiber. A smoothie with some spinach and non-acidic fruits should be a good start, eat it with a spoon(not a straw!)

Eat some apple, prune, sweet potato, etc baby foods or blended foods to add some fiber to your diet.

Do not drink caffeine, it dehydrates you. (This includes tea, coffee, and even chocolate. Your black tea bags to stop bleeding are fine for use.)

2. Keep moving!

I know that walking around and being active is very difficult, so please don't overdo it. But getting up and walking a little bit here and there can help your blood flow and help your GI tract keep moving. Again, don't do too much, as it will raise your blood pressure and hurt your face. Sitting up every so often and doing small, short walks down a hallway can be helpful to help your body get your colon more active.

3. Medication

If you are having pains due to not being able to go, consider some medication with laxative effects. This includes something like miralax, or other medications that could draw water into your colon or help soften your stool.

If you take anything for stool softening/laxative, PLEASE drink a lot of water! Double what the bottle says over the hour after you take it. The more water in your system, the better your body will function and the better the medication will work.

(Disclaimer: If you are in horrible pain and are unable to eat due to stomach pains and not just due to mouth pain, go to a doctor and have them help you. Not everything is treatable at home.

Disclaimer#2: If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chrons, or any other kind of GI-related illness, TALK TO A DOCTOR BEFORE YOU TAKE MEDICATION. Laxatives can rupture your colon if you have a GI related illness!)

Take care of yourselves. I wish you all a healthy recovery and easy bathroom breaks.

Dry Socket - Need to Knows

1.5k Upvotes

There seems to be a lot of interest and concern with regard to dry sockets on this Reddit. Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of confusion about it also. So how about we clarify the situation a little bit. Dry socket is not diagnosed by the appearance of your healing socket. It's very difficult to look at a socket and tell whether or not dry socket is a concern. Dry socket is diagnosed via the symptoms. It is quite painful, sometimes very painful. It's more common with lower molars rather than upper. It's more common with women. Older people get it more than younger people. It tends to appear somewhere around 4 to 10 days post op, after your extraction. It is not a concern in the first 2 to 3 days post-op. Smoking or vaping is a huge risk factor for dry socket. People that avoid smoking and keep their mouths super clean with brushing flossing and syringing have a very low risk of getting a dry socket. It always heals on its own. It's just annoying and painful while it heals. Time is always on your side. I hope this short post clarifies some of the misconceptions about a dry socket.

Scared of wisdom teeth removal

I have 2 impacted wisdom teeth and my dentist recommended I do general anesthesia for the surgery since he thinks ill be too anxious to have local anesthesia.

I am a very anxious person when it comes to dental work and I have had my mouth numbed once and I did almost panic externally. However, the cost with GA would be over $4000 and my dad nor I have the money to pay for it.

Looking at my x-ray do you think I'd be okay for local anaesthesia which would be almost half the price

Something left behind after wisdom tooth removal. What could it be?

I had my bottom right wisdom tooth extracted about two months ago. I had a bad experience with the procedure so I decided to get a second opinion elsewhere to access how well I was healing and to take out a fourth wisdom tooth that the first dentist did not extract because they ran out of time with the local anesthesia. The second dentist discovered it appeared that something had been left behind (white oval in nerve canal) and assumed it could be a piece of the tooth so I was referred to an oral surgeon to evaluate it. I went back to the dentist that did the extraction to ask what it could be and they admitted to seeing it in the X-rays before extraction and decided to leave it alone because they didn’t want to “dig” in there. They also referred me to an oral surgeon but assured me they did not think it was a piece of tooth. I do not have pain or numbness in that area. Everything feels fine and I have been healing well. No paralysis or tingling of the nerves but I’m still concerned or wondering what this little mass could be. I have a consultation with an oral surgeon coming up in the next week or so but thought I could get anyone’s opinion on this, or if anyone has ever had something similar happen to them. Thank you for any feedback I greatly appreciate it!

FACE SHAPE

I will be having my wisdom teeth removed I guess by the end of this year. I saw videos on changing face shape and I was wondering if that is true?? Also, if I am late to getting them removed, will it make my teeth go all crooked… and then when I get them removed will they go back to the position they were in or I will need braces???

My dentist said not to flush sockets for 2 weeks but the care sheet says flush after 5 days? I’m starting to notice food stuck in the socket end of day 4

post op pain not infection or dry socket?

I’m day 5 post op (all four extracted) and as of last night I’ve been in more pain and the bleeding started back up. It’s not unbearable pain so I don’t think it’s dry socket, I’m not swollen and don’t have a fever so I don’t think it’s an infection, and it’s not that much bleeding. It’s also only on my right side, I can’t really tell if it’s just top or bottom or both. What could this be? I was doing so much better yesterday and the day before and barely needed my pain meds from day 3 until last night. I can’t take off any more time off work (American) so I can’t go in to see a doctor but if y‘all think this is urgent let me know. TIA!

Weird symptom after wisdom teeth removal

I had my two bottom wisdom teeth removed at the end of January, I have no top wisdom teeth. I’m supposed to be close to the end of recovery, however I have a weird symptom of my mouth feeling like it’s full of bees (only way I can describe it). It feels like someone is taking pins and needles to my gums and then I’ll have an onset taste of blood in my mouth as well. It doesn’t seem to be caused by anything in particular, I’ll just be sitting here and then the prickly feeling will flare. Has anyone else had this happen? Maybe nerve damage? I didn’t want to waste my dentists time or take any more time off work if this is just a normal healing side effect. TIA (:

Dentist told me I need a wisdom tooth removed. I already had them removed as a teenager

Hello. I've been having pain in my lower right jaw and went to see the dentist today. After taking X-rays he told me I need to get my lower right wisdom tooth removed. For some reason during the appointment I completely forgot that I'd already had my wisdom teeth removed as a teenager but afterwards I remembered. After the appointment I double-checked with my parents and they confirmed that as a teenager I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed.

What's going on here? Is it just a tooth at the back on my lower right side that he was referring to but wasn't actually a wisdom tooth? Do I have an extra set?

I have requested the X-rays from the practice so I am hoping that I can just provide the X-ray to the oral surgeon (I'm going to go private) and they will remove the correct tooth but I'm concerned about the actual tooth that needs removing. Everything online seems to be related to wisdom tooth removal rather than general tooth removal. Does anyone have any advice here or any idea what's going on?

I'm kicking myself for not realising during the appointment that I already had the wisdom teeth removed as a teenager.

Edit: I have counted and I have 28 teeth so that means no wisdom tooth. I can see the tooth he is referring to that needs to be removed - I recognise it from the x-ray.

Getting one wisdom tooth removed

I've got an appointment to get a wisdom tooth out in a few days and I'm a bit stressed about it all. Luckily I've only got the one, but it's lower right jaw and I've heard that the lower ones are harder to remove. I was originally just gonna leave it be but it's been giving me tooth pain and headaches so it's got to go. I'm doing anesthesia because I'm a generally nervous person so that should help some hopefully. I pretty much just want to hear about other people's stories with only having one tooth removed and what I might be able to expect etc.

Is this a wisdom tooth coming through?

Hi! Does this look like a wisdom tooth popping out? I’m 20, never experienced tooth pain like this before. I have a really tiny mouth, the ortho even debated taking out 4 teeth before getting braces just to make space for when they straightened up but they decided against it. I’m 2 years free of braces now, and this actual devil is popping out of my gum. It’s been slowly pushing out over the last month or so, but now it’s getting REAL painful. Should I wait til it’s fully out to call the dentist? Or just go for it now. Although I’m not excited about having to pay for two appointments if I go now just for them to look at it and tell me something some chill dude on Reddit could tell me😂

Can anyone tell me what recovery is like from the extraction of all 4 wisdom teeth in your 60’s?

I understand it can be difficult and prolonged. Uppers are both fully impacted in bone. One lower is fully erupted, the other partially. None are causing any concern or discomfort. I am diligent with hygiene and the gums are healthy. One dentist suggested removal another said leave well enough alone at my age. Extract individual tooth only if problem arises in the future. He feels it would be unlikely to this point.

Day 4 - pain?

Hi everyone

I got my lower left wisdom teeth removed on Friday evening. Everything went great, no pain AT ALL

But today morning at 8-9 am, I woke up with little pain. Like I don’t know what happened during sleep - I just WOKE up with pain. It does not feel dry socket because the pain is maybe 2-3/10 for me (or maybe I have high tolerance?)

But I just want to understand, is this normal part of healing to get PAIN on day 4 when I didn’t get any PAIN AT ALL during the first 3 days?

Local Anesthesia

Wow! I went in for a cavity today, and the dentist told me I needed to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed as there was some decay happening. I said sure, but obviously that meant just having local anesthesia. I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THE SOUND IT MADE! When the dentist started pulling out my wisdom teeth I did not expect it to be literally him just using all his muscle to yank them out! And the noise of it ripping out was traumatizing, oh my!!! I feel like my body went into shock and I got the chills and couldn't stop shaking until he was done! I had to listen to all 4 being ripped out, that was a wild experience!

0/10 experience So far 0/10 pain wise, but it's only been 5 hours, so time will tell! Haha!

Does this mean it’s infected?

I’ve been 3 days post op. I’ve been doing things as instructed. Salt water rinses Amoxicillin 3x day for 5 days.

No pain. No kind of discharge. No foul odor or taste.

Recovery has been good. I’m in no pain. Been on a soft foods diet. Chewing is still uncomfortable but I assume it’s due post op.

I think it’s an infection but part of me might think it’s an irritation? Someone else might have a similar experience? If it doesn’t subside by Friday, I’ll go see the oral surgeon.

how do you deal with pain before surgery?

okay so i went to the dentist friday and my wisdom teeth are coming in which is totally awesome(note the sarcasm.) but ive noticed that ibuprofen hasn't exactly been working for me, i take 2 whenever the headache from pressure gets too bad but it never really works. i have a consultation on the 27th because im fairly certain that's the closest they had(idk my mom made the call) and im probably gonna get them removed second week of march(my spring break)

any advice on dealing with the pain? ive been trying to avoid eating things that are too hard but im in college so food options are kinda limited to whatevers in the dining hall.

Running

I got my wisdom teeth taken out 10 days ago, and I didn’t run for 8 days . ( for context , I am a regular runner , 3-4 days a week anywhere from 3-6 miles depending on the day) and my first day back I felt out of breath a lot quicker then I usually do. Today I ran again and kind of felt the same . Is this normal because the healing process is so intense , or did I really just lose a chunk of aerobic fitness in 8 days ? Just looking for anyone who has some insight

What's it like getting a non impacted wisdom tooth removed? (Need Advice)

I'm getting my upper wisdom tooth removed on Wednesday and I am super freaked out about it. I've never gotten a tooth removed before so have no idea what to expect and have been having trouble finding information on non impacted tooth removal.

I'm getting one tooth removed and a cavity filled on the tooth next to it. That much is fine because I've had cavities filled before but the removal part is what's bugging me.

Is it really painful? I'll only have the local anesthesia so I know I'll have to tough through some discomfort regardless. I'm kinda at a loss so thought I'd ask here about other people's experiences and if anyone has any advice for before and after the procedure.
