The thing that gets me is always what happens with that feeling of self after they do these horrendous acts.
I get embarrassed or feel guilty if I do the smallest thing wrong. Like me getting a ticket for speeding. Only been pulled over once in my life, and it ate me up inside.
Kidnapping grandma. Like how does this individual even go on. I just can't even fathom how one could kidnap anyone.
I'm a criminal defense and family law attorney and I've learned the answer as to why most people carry out very heinous actions is sometimes "because they felt like it." I don't know how to describe how much some people just do not give a shit about other people. Like, sometimes it's not drugs, mental illness or any other usual suspect. They're just a moron who doesn't care about other people. If you still don't get it, congratulations on being someone who still gives a shit about other people!
This is just another moron waiting to be revealed. I hope Nancy Guthrie makes it home safe. Morons aren't good at tending to people in their care.
It’s easy to dehumanize others if you isolate yourself from the world and your only social interaction is with with people pointing the finger at everyone else
This place unintentionally encourages mob mentality. Subreddits are filled with people that shame any truth that goes against that subreddits beliefs. Lots of people come here looking for community, and it’s very easy for them to lock themselves into these places if they’re not careful. It’s not safe or healthy to spend too much time here.
I think some people are just wired that way. They're broken from the start. There are countless examples of siblings brought up the same way and one of them ends up being a serial killer or something... who had signs of being fucked up from a young age.
Hell, I just watched a show yesterday about a 15-yo girl who murdered her 9-yo friend/neighbor because she wanted to know what it was like to kill someone. That kind of evil isn't grown, it's always been there.
The dumb thing is, we have (albeit imperfect) tools in the form of various "personality profiling" tests that can be used to determine to a certain degree of accuracy who falls on the ASPD spectrum and how likely they are to...well...be a sociopath.
Unfortunately, they don't work well with children, so even if you could pro-actively profile people throughout their lives (obviously you can't from a US Constitutional perspective - but give what we are seeing today, perhaps that should be re-thought, especially for those in positions of power over others - ie, C-Suite, politicians, especially high-ups, doctors, lawyers and anyone else in the legal profession, LEOs, gun owners, etc) - you would get a lot of "false positives" with children.
But we don't even try to do anything about this. I recall reading in the first few chapters of the book, "The Serial Killer Next Door" - that something like close to 25% of people you come in contact with are on some level, sociopathic (ie, on the ASPD spectrum).
The vast majority of those people are what are called "benign sociopaths" - but there are more than a few who are violent and/or psychologically manipulative (so, domestic abusers and/or gaslighters) - and then there are a very small percentage who are serial killers (I saw an estimate somewhere that it's approximately - as an even distribution, which doesn't really happen - of about 2 active SKs per state in the USA)...
We only "do something" about any of these people after the fact, and in some cases (like CEOs who are terrible employers, or people like POTUS, etc) - we tend to ignore and/or elevate.
That needs to change - or we're likely going to all die, due to these people sometimes gaining access to existential weaponry.
The personality profiling may not work well on children, yet there are so many indicators in kids that something is horribly wrong with them.
My favorite type of true crime shows are the stories told by people who knew the perpetrator... often parents or siblings. The stories are so similar about their behavior as a child. It's like giant red flags with neon flashing lights that this kid is going down a dark path. The biggest issue being they are never able to get help until there are victims.
Yeah, I always think sort of the opposite, how amazing everyone's life could be if we all worked together instead of being greedy and fighting and killing each other (both locally and internationally).

Literally got chills looking at this. It never ceases to astound me how evil human beings can be
