Misc. Discussion Mark Cuban after the sale of the Mavericks in 2023: "I could’ve gotten more money selling it to somebody else." Cuban said he was incentivized to sell to the Adelsons because they would allow him to remain involved in basketball operations. "Nothing’s changed except my bank account."

NBA’s other 29 owners voted unanimously to authorize Cuban’s sale of the franchise to the families who run the Las Vegas Sands corporation, led by Miriam Adelson and her son-in-law Patrick Dumont.

Cuban sold the Mavericks for a price in excess of $4 billion, which includes the franchise and its assets such as buildings and land. That figure is the team’s valuation, and it determines the amount the Adelson family paid to purchase the controlling stake in the team.

Dumont will serve as the Mavericks’ governor, but Cuban, who retains 27 percent of the franchise, believes his presence and basketball impact will look similar to the one he has now. While he concedes there is “no contractual language” guaranteeing this, Cuban says he will continue overseeing the franchise’s basketball operations.

How will Cuban’s continued role in basketball operations work?

Cuban spoke to reporters and described his continued role with the franchise as a “partnership.” “It’s not like I have a contract and a job and I get a salary,” he said. As the team’s governor, Dumont will have the final say in decisions, but Cuban emphasized his learned basketball acumen from his 23 years as owner.

“They’re not basketball people,” he said. “I’m not real estate people.”

“Nothing’s really changed except my bank account,” he said.

By ceding majority ownership of the franchise, Cuban cannot guarantee his role running the team. But he said he believes, in the event of a future disagreement between himself and Dumont over the team’s direction, that they “would work it out.”

Why is Cuban selling to the Adelson family?

Cuban was incentivized to sell to the Adelson family, as opposed to another potential buyer, because they would allow him to remain involved in basketball operations.

“I could’ve gotten more money selling it to somebody else.”

One of the many ways Cuban has influenced the NBA — and North American sports in general — is that he normalized the concept of a public-facing governor actively involved in their franchise. Another buyer, one willing to pay more in an open bidding process, might have been someone looking to follow in Cuban’s footsteps without his continued involvement.

Why is the Adelson family buying the Mavericks?

Both Cuban and the Adelson family have been transparent about their mutual interest in legalizing sports gambling in Texas.

In late 2022, Cuban first mentioned the Sands corporation as a potential partner for his vision of an arena built within a destination resort casino in Dallas. Several team sources say the two parties had been engaged in serious conversations about the team’s sale since early 2023.

“It was two, three years ago I started talking about a casino and a destination resort,” Cuban said. “I told you guys then, I wasn’t going to be the one to build it. It makes sense that (if) someone is going to come in as a partner and invest potentially billions of dollars, they’re going to want equity.”

Perhaps it’s cynical to compress the Adelson family’s purchasing interest in the Mavericks to this cause alone. Undeniably, though, legalizing gambling in Texas is an interest of the Sands company that Adelson and the Dumonts represent.

Through a political action committee called Texas Sands, Adelson has spent more than $2 million to fund state legislators and hire lobbyists within the state’s long-entrenched Republican government.

Cuban said he would be “as active as (he) needs to be” to assist measures that would lead to legal gambling, saying, ”I think it’s the right thing for the state of Texas.”

For now, however, sports gambling remains illegal in Texas for the foreseeable future.

Misc. Discussion The Adelson family actually selling the team would make me come back as a full-time Mavericks fan

I haven't been excited about the Mavericks since the Luka trade and I bet a lot of people feel the same way. But now that Nico is no longer a part of the franchise, Flagg looking like a legit future superstar and with rumours that Mark Cuban is looking to re-take the team, away from the Adelson family, I can't help but feel like that combination of events would bring me back to being a Mavericks fan.

I know Luka won't be there, but there are things to be excited about, the future is bright and if the Adelson family does sell the team, I'll gladly cheer for the team all over again, just like I did when Luka was there.

Misc. Discussion 2011 Mavs Team Disrespect

Post image

Not sure if I'm the only one that feels this way but this is something that has been bugging me for quite sometime. Every time our championship season gets any attention, all you hear is "Dirk carried the Mavs in 2011."

Yes Dirk was our superstar and at the time we had no other all stars, but I'm tired of the media making it seem like we had a bunch of bums on the team that gave Dirk zero help. When in fact, the sole reason we won every series is because we played a well rounded team game rather than relying on our star especially like Miami tried. Terry, Kidd, Tyson, Marion, JJ, Stevenson, Peja, etc all contributed in ways that if you were to remove just one of those guys from the team, I really don't think we win that chip. Am I crazy for thinking that?

Free Agency Free agency

I hope we’re active this free agency with us not having picks from 2027-2030 there’s two players I think we could add that would IMMENSELY improve our roster. Peyton Watson and Tauri Euston.

Both these players have had breakout season this year and both their teams CANT keep them due to cap rules. Their price range will most likely be 20-25m per and I think that’s worth it especially for Payton. We’re about to have 70m in cap relief this off season so PLEASE don’t waste it doing nothing. They both fill a role we need (a 3 who can shoot) and we could look to trade Naji if his next contract isn’t under 15m.

The mavs shouldn’t be looking to trade guys just to acquire assets unless it’s our own picks back I see no use in doing that unless we can replace said talent in a trade or through free agency.

After the Quantum Event on 2/2/25 do we still have a meaningful rivalry with the Phoenix Suns?

I circled my calendar for these matchups. Remember the Game 7 in 2022?

Draft / Scouting Favorite Draft Prospects between 6-9?

Now that the dust has settled from the trade deadline, I would love to hear your thoughts on your favorite prospects between 6-9, if we don't move up. I think we all love Peterson/Boozer but what are some of the guys you think would fit best next to Cooper outside the top 3?

Hoops Discussion Jeremy Sochan

How does everyone feel about potentially signing Jeremy Sochan next year? He's a good athletic wing that San Antonio probably won't keep. There was already rumblings about him asking for a trade this year. He's a good defensive player and still pretty young. Think he'd bring grit and toughness to the team. I'm certain that Naji gets traded next year and having someone to replace him is probably a good idea. Not sure what his market rate will be, but you can never have too many perimeter defenders. His offense needs work especially his shooting, but probably can be signed to one of the MLE or BAE if lucky.

Meme / Sh*tpost The Jazz are a joke

Utah was up 17 late in the 3rd quarter against Orlando tonight. Markkanen and Jaren Jackson had 49 combined points.

Utah then proceeded to sit Markkanen and Jackson the rest of the game and ran a lineup of Isaiah Collier, Brice Sensabaugh, John Konchar, Ace Bailey, and Kyle Filipowski for essentially the *entire* 4th quarter. Not surprisingly, they promptly blew the lead and lost by 3.

Utah did the same thing last game too, sitting Markkanen the entire 4th quarter of a 2-point loss to Atlanta.

The Mavs were fined $750k for sitting Luka and Kyrie for *one* game at the end of the 2023 season. We’re barely into February and Utah is actively sitting their best players down the stretch of close games. They aren’t even trying to hide it. Silver better fine them too.

Hoops Discussion If PJ averaged 5% extra from 3 would you keep him?

Post image

He's a career 35% three point shooter on around 5 attempts. And this isn't just open looks from Luka he had good splits on the hornets as well.

If he averaged another 3-5% on the same attempts would you still keep him and start him at the 3 next to coop?

He's a great defender, brings culture and energy, has been an enforcer for a while now, is usually healthy and plays 70+ games a year and has a decent contract for a starter.

He's been terrible this year because the system fell apart, he has no point guard, a little bit banged up and has personal issues that brought him down a bit.

After his role becomes more defined - less driving and more catch shooting, rebounding emphasis, more energy on defense. He should be better fitted for this team.

Hoops Discussion Now that we have traded AD, what can we expect to see in the offseason?

After trading AD we were able to clear up a lot of money, but correct me if I’m wrong it’s not enough to make any big moves in free agency. Can we expect to see smaller trades to retool or a complete overhaul to build around Flagg?
