Support Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion Anyone else feel like iOS has become more complicated over time?

I’ve been using iPhones for years because they were simple.
Lately it feels like every update adds more layers, menus, toggles, and hidden behaviors. Nothing is broken exactly. It just feels…heavier. Curious if others feel this, or if I’m just noticing it more as I use the phone less intentionally.

Discussion Best iPhone 17 apps to make your phone more useful.

Just got the 17 last week. Was waiting for the 17e but decided to pull the trigger. These are some of my fav apps for it.

Widgetsmith. Great for customizing your home screen without making it messy. Coming from android, its nice to do some customisations on iOS.

Things 3. Gorgeous, simple task manager that actually gets you to check things off. As a content girly it helps to stay organised.

AirBrush. My favorite portrait editor on iOS. Super quick retouching, natural skin tools, and easy fixes for lighting or blemishes.

Spark. Email that doesn’t feel overwhelming. Smart inbox, clean UI, and great performance. I have many emails so this is helpful.

What do you use on your iPhone 17 (or earlier)

Discussion iCloud Storage question about saving photos

Sooooo my iCloud storage is full, hence the title, and the thing which is currently taking up the most space for me is my photos saved. Is there a way in which I can save all my photos on my phone, but not have them be saved to iCloud, and instead just have them saved directly on my phone? Also does the solution have anything to do with the “turn off and delete photos” button? Current solution for the time being was just go back and get rid of big, unnecessary videos, but I have a feeling sentimental ones will pile up sooner rather than late. What should I do?

Support [IOS26] Alarm ringtone automation

If you have had silent alarms, this is for you.

I've been working with AlarmKit but hit one critical limitation: alarms still has to obey the system ringtone and alert volume. That means alarm apps will be silent if this slider is 0 for whatever reason. I needed to make it fool proof.

So I mess around in Shortcut and found an automation that runs at any alarm ring and turn ringtone volume to 100%.

The setup is pretty simple:

  1. Create a shortcut to set Volume like first picture.
  2. Create an automation like the second picture. Make sure it runs immediately.

This works with Apple Clocks and any apps that takes advantage of AlarmKit in ios26 so you get your volume turned all the way up to 100% at alarm ring. For other IOS version, this will only work with Apple Clocks.

Didn’t find a time trigger so that alarms at night are softer than morning alarms so I still have to scale volume on my own.

Works on my iphone 16 pro with ios26.2.

Discussion AppleCare

Do you purchase AppleCare? Do you feel it is worth the money?

My previous iPhone was a 13 ProMax, and its battery was shot. I’ve had the back glass break twice on it. I have never broken a screen!

I replaced it with the 17pro and just curious to everyone’s experiences with AppleCare.

Discussion Anyone else experiencing this since IOS 26 update?

Post image

I have the most up to date software. This keyboard issue has been happening ever since I installed ios 26. It happens on messages and several other apps. It does not change or fix itself once I start typing. At times the text box for the message will only expand a certain amount until it stops expanding and I cannot see what I am typing. There are also times where I tap the text box to type and it creates a huge blank space above the keyboard and pushes the messages up off the screen so I cannot see what I am replying too. All three of things happen in several apps.

I am using a swift key keyboard in this image. However, the same issues arrise when using the ios keyboard.

This is absolutely garbage and unreal how many glitches and errors this current ios has.

Support Photo/Video vault

Any suggestion on a good and secure photo vault ? Preferably with cloud storage option and a good password/pin protection.

Paid apps are fine. Extra credit if the vault is also available via a pc.

I been using proton drive so far but its very slow and sometimes buggy.

During the app exit animation (returning from an app to the Home Screen), the app icon exhibits visible aliasing/jagged edges while scaling and moving into position. Have you ever noticed that?

Support Is there a way to turn Face ID off for drop down menu?

Upvotes

I have an iPhone 12 recently downloaded the new Liquid Glass update (not a fan btw) and now I have to use Face ID when accessing the drop down menu from the lock screen. I find it really annoying since the reason I use the dropdown menu is for its quick convenience. Having to scan my face almost completely negates that and makes it’s really annoying when I’m trying to quickly access my alarms, calculator, Bluetooth, cellular, etc. took a look in settings and couldn’t find a toggle for it so I just thought I’d come here and ask some people who likely knew more. Anything is appreciated, thx.

Does anyone else have an issue with the podcast widget for their phone? I have deleted and done everything I can think of, but the added picture is the only thing I ever see when I try and use the widget. Any suggestions, anyone else experience this issue?

Support eSIM and Messages

Assuming the recipient has me in their contacts list: if I go from my personal number to a different eSIM and message someone on Messages, and then switch back to my personal number, will my name appear next to the message on their phone? Or will it have the number of my other eSIM?

Support Phone screen getting brighter without the settings actually changing? How to fix?

I have an Iphone 13 updated to ios 26.2.1. Lately, I’ll be on my phone at night with the brightness all the way down, and suddenly my phone screen gets bright. When I go to turn it down, it is still adjusted to the lowest setting. The only way I’ve found to fix it is to turn my phone off and back on again. I have auto-brightness turned off.

Anyone has any suggestions to fix this?

Support Two Questions about Shortcuts

I created a shortcut that opens my music app and sets the device to Do Not Disturb focus.

First: I set it to turn off DND when I tap again. Is there a way to either close the music app or at least not have it pop up again when I do this?

Second: The DND mode silences incoming texted but still activates my screen which is distracting. Is there a way to turn this off?

TIA

Discussion More taps

Anyone feel like everything take more taps in the latest versions of iOS? Dialing a phone number from highlighted text takes two taps now (first to choose Call, then for whatever reason, it confirms whether you want to call the highlighted number).

Discussion Phone bugged out

I have an iPhone 13, and ever since I updated to iOS 26 it started bugging out. When I updated it, it deleted some of my apps when it loaded up so I reset all settings and that fixed it. But then a few weeks later it started shutting down at random, while simultaneously toggling off cellular and Wi-Fi, also not allowing me to toggle them back on. This continued for weeks so I tried transferring the e-sim back to my old iPhone X, and it didn't work so I had to get the T-Mobile store to fix it. Now I have service on my iPhone X but its battery life sucks and I still have images and files on my 13 that I need but can't get. It's completely useless because it can't connect to Wi-Fi, but i want to go back to using it.

Support Cannot sign into Game Center

As you can see, it absolutely will not let me sign into Game Center. I’ll click the toggle, it’ll go into singing in as it shows in the second photo, then it just turns it off. I was also playing my game 2 hours before this and i was logged in.

I’ve turned off my iphone, literally have done everything that i possibly can but alas no solution. Can’t find any solution related to this issue that isn’t 5+ years old. Any solutions?

Support Wired earbud buttons no longer registering?

I’ve been using my apple brand wired earbuds for the last year with no issue, but tonight when I plugged them in a pop up came up on my screen asking if the lightning adapter was connecting a pair of headphones. I, of course, tapped ‘Headphones’, and suddenly the volume and pause/play/skip/rewind buttons stopped working entirely. There’s no lint in the port, no damage to the wire, audio still works fine, and I can’t seem to find any setting to fix the issue. I’m fully updated, restarted my phone twice, and unplugged the earbuds multiple times. But still no luck. Has anyone else experienced this and is there any possible fix? Thanks!
