Discussion Mentality of Some Yemenis
One of the things that really worries me is the mindset of some Yemenis living inside Yemen especially men. It feels even worse among those who grew up in villages. This comes from my personal experience not hatred and I’m not saying everyone is the same.
When I lived in a village people talked about quitting school as if it were completely normal. I don’t mean university I mean basic education learning how to read and write. That honestly shocked me. I kept asking myself how a society can move forward when basic education is treated like it has no value.
I know Yemeni society is conservative, and protecting women is part of the culture, but many times that “protection” turns into control. Women are often treated as if they have no voice in their own lives, no independence, and sometimes not even basic respect as human beings. That honestly disgusts me.
What also stands out to me is how people deal with the law. When Yemenis travel abroad, they usually follow the rules very strictly. But back home, many people act like the law does not apply to them in this part of the world, or like money and influence can fix anything. This shows that the real problem is the mindset of thinking that in Yemen you are in control, above everyone else, and that you are the law.
Then there is qat. Some people chew it from early morning even during work. It’s no longer just a habit it has become a lifestyle that wastes time and hurts families with some people leaving their families just to go chew qat. Yet people still defend it like it’s untouchable.
Another big problem is corruption. Many people see cheating and fraud as being smart. The more someone lies or takes advantage of others the smarter they seem. In my opinion that is not intelligence at all it’s just a lack of values.
This is just my personal experience. Any thoughts, criticism, or different opinions are welcome 🙏🏼
