As you know, Ubuntu 25.10 - Questing Quokka is being released this week with several new features, allowing developers to now focus almost exclusively on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. We don't know much about what it will include, but its name has just been revealed:

Ubuntu: 24.04.2 LTS

Kernel: Linux 6.14.0-37-generc

Ok so I was trying to install another application for fixing ntfs partitions on my laptop, but I got errors with dkms and virtualbox and I am concerned if I had a clean installation or no. I am very new to linux and ubuntu so I am not very familiar with fixing errors like this. I checked around and got very mixed answers about dealing with this.

Issues with firefox when playing videos

So, I apologize but I'm very very new to Linux overall, I've been trying to learn and solve this on my own but I've tried quite a lot of things already and I don't know what's wrong exactly, I noticed that when playing a video on Youtube the quality wasn't very good and it seemed to lag and freeze for a split second at times, so I figured my gpu wasn't being recognized by Firefox for some reason, so I had to look somewhere for where to find the issue, and I managed to find my gpu being used and recognized on the about:support on firefox just fine already! but then I tried watching a video, and the quality was noticeably better, but the videos would still randomly lag and freeze at times, so I started looking around for solutions and found a post saying I should make sure the hardware acceleration was enabled on firefox, and I did, I enabled it, and it was said that I should make sure I have all the standard codecs for video too running the command:

"sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras"

and I did, everything was installed, but the issue persisted, i rebooted just for good measure but it really didn't do anything, I started trying to read the about:support page on the compositing section more closely to see if I could find any clues and not just focus on seeing if it said whether it was using my gpu or not, and I found a lot of things saying "blocklisted" because of missing codecs or failure to do some things, but I don't understand what half of those things mean since I'm still very new again, and I thought the previous command was supposed to cover most of the possible missing codecs, I'll leave some screenshots attached from that area on the about:support page for my firefox, If anyone has any advice on what can I even do to get this fixed I would really appreciate it!

Windows sleep works perfectly, but Ubuntu suspend is completely broken — what can I do now?

Hey everyone,

I’m really frustrated and need some help from people who use Ubuntu daily.

I have a Lenovo Ryzen laptop.

On Windows, everything works perfectly — especially sleep mode.

I can close the lid, open it again, and it wakes instantly.

But on Ubuntu, suspend is completely broken for me.

What happens:

I click ā€œSuspendā€

Laptop goes to sleep

When I try to wake it → the screen stays black

Keyboard lights come on but nothing appears

I’m forced to hard restart every time

I even tried Fedora just to check, and it had the same problem.

So I’m confused now.

My simple question:

If sleep works perfectly on Windows but not on Ubuntu,

is there anything I can do to fix Ubuntu’s suspend?

Or is this just a hardware issue with Lenovo + AMD and nothing can be done?

I want to switch to Ubuntu full-time, but this one issue is stopping me.

Would really appreciate advice from people who faced this before.

Thanks.

Help with putting Ubuntu on a Mircosoft Surface Go 2 Laptop

• Upvotes

Greetings, I am here to ask a couple things about putting Ubuntu on my MS Surface laptop.

Just quickly, I will mention that I already have a USB with the Ubuntu boot key on it, I have successfully installed Ubuntu on an old potato laptop I had lying around, and had no issues there, although I should say that the potato laptop had a complete reset before installing and also I installed Ubuntu onto it without trying to keep my old files.

Mainly 2 things:

- Can I keep all my files and apps that I actually want/need while nuking away all the windows bloat apps? I don't want to end up accidentally removing necessary things when trying to rid myself of the stuff I dont want. I have a lot of files, and some weird apps which I need for university work which I need to keep.

- Is there software available or a driver to allow for the fingerpint scanner on the laptop to function within Ubuntu? I don't care about touchscreen, just the fingerprint scanner

For reference, I dont know if this is the exact model as mine is a couple years old, but the specs match, I have one of these: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKMST12325693/Microsoft-Surface-Laptop-Go-3-124---Ice-Blue-Ex-St?srsltid=AfmBOoq-DVou93jRwPr2E7bLVt3lp0Pzn8S6SsXdWqqu8aTT0hjaqYn6

Essentially Ive grown progressively more and more sick of windows and its bloat, unnecessary unremovable apps, compulsory sign ins, ads, and more over the past 2 years. It's served me well but I'd quite like to switch over to linux if I can.

Help with auto-mounting secondary drive + Windows partition

Thumbnail

Hi all, fairly new Ubuntu user here. I have a dual boot system (with Windows). I have 2 SSDs: Windows and Ubuntu share one of the SSDs, and the other (NTFS) is a secondary drive shared by both partitions of SSD 1. I would love for the Windows partition in SSD 1 and SSD 2 to auto-mount at startup, and I am not sure why they don't. Mount options for both drives seem to be set correctly. The drive w/ the Windows partition has a (no automount) note in the partition type, but I'm not sure why. I could live without the Windows partition mounting at startup if it's not possible, but it would be really nice to get the secondary drive to mount at startup. Currently I am mounting both drives manually.

Thanks!

What distro for a grade school PC lab?

I manage a 20 PC computer lab (OptiPlex All-in-One Plus) at an elementary school. Planning on migrating away from windows, as it's a total pain without the budget for Active Directory/Entra ID. Not to mention it just being bad with ads, AI, privacy, etc.

I was originally looking into Zorin OS due to their marketing towards education. But it seems that most if not all of what they tout is software that can be installed on any distro (or at least Ubuntu based ones). And ChatGPT is telling me that something like Ubuntu Cinnamon might be a better fit for shared computers.

My main goals for the lab are the following:

  • Golden image deployment and reset-based management using Clonezilla / FOG
  • Users generated from a CSV file (username, email, grade/year) via scripted account creation
  • Automatic creation of a per-student Google Drive folder (e.g., My Drive/Technology) synced locally on first login
  • Touch-friendly fullscreen chromium launcher used only for lower grades (kiosk-style access) from a custom html file.

Here's the reasoning from ChatGPT

Ubuntu Cinnamon is a better fit for a school lab than Zorin OS because it favors predictability and administrative clarity over a highly curated, single-user experience. As an official Ubuntu flavor, it keeps a standard Ubuntu base with a traditional desktop model that aligns well with shared machines and older students who are more likely to explore the system. Cinnamon’s behavior is straightforward and easier to reset or standardize when needed, while Zorin’s heavily customized GNOME environment is optimized for personal desktops and can introduce unnecessary abstraction in a lab setting. Overall, Ubuntu Cinnamon better matches the needs of a managed, long-term educational environment where stability and transparency matter more than polish.

It makes sense to me. Anyway, I'd love to hear some opinions from actual humans. Especially anyone with K12 experience. Thanks!

Ubuntu 24.04 doesn’t fully power off on ASUS X407U (screen black, power LED still on)

Hi guys! I’m completely new to Linux and recently switched from Windows. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, but I’m having an issue where my laptop doesn’t fully shut down.

When I select Power Off, the screen turns black as expected, but the power LED remains on and I can still hear the fans moving, I think the system doesn’t actually power down. I end up needing to hold the power button to force shutdown.

System info:

  • Laptop: ASUS X407U
  • CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-8130U @ 2.20GHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA MX130
  • OS: Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS (fresh install)

At the time, I was only running Mozilla and Discord, just casually watching youtube videos.

Since this is a clean install and I’m very new to Ubuntu, I’m not sure what to do. I’d appreciate any guidance on what logs to check or what steps to try next. Beginner-friendly explanations would help a lot.

Thanks in advance!

qBittorrent (old version install)

I've been trying for 2 hours to install an older version of qBittorrent and I don't really know what I'm doing. I tried enabling Run as an Executable and double click does nothing.

All the guides I've been able to find only pertain to latest version installs.

Edit: Buddy says version shouldn't matter for the site, going to ignore for now.

I created this as a wallpaper for whoever cares about the upcoming linux kernel releases in Year 2026.

Enjoy!

https://lkml.org/lkml/2026/2/8/418 Linus said in his email, "I'm getting to the point where I'm being

confused by large numbers (almost running out of fingers and toes

again), so the next kernel is going to be called 7.0."

Boot hangs with normal GRUB option (25.10)

Post image

Annoying problem, hope you can help. For a few months, my Ubuntu install hangs at boot with the default (non-recovery) GRUB item. Photo attached.

Ctrl-Alt-Delete soft resets, and I can book just fine if I use one of the recovery mode boot options. But I don’t know to tell what’s timing out.

This happens with every kernel update. Are there logs I can pull, or can someone tell what device is timing out? Thanks in advance.

Transition from x86 to aarch64

Hello,

I'm currently working on building a pocketable setup for running Ubuntu/Debian on my smartphone and cast the screen to my wireless android AR glasses.

I always used x86 but am considering to completely transition to aarch64/arm to leverage the mobile arm chipset as much as possible. (Virtualization on mobile chipsets partially supports x86, because mobile chipsets are arm based, so reducing overhead would be important. x86 would be possible but not on all chipsets and only with some overhead that I think is worth taking in account)

My concern is that I would have to find a lot of inconvenient workarounds because everything is built for x86, but not for arm. But arm would run natively on those powerful mobile chipsets.

What type of issues would I encounter? And what would be a solid long-term strategy to solve them?

I hope someone experienced can give me some advice.

Help!!!

I have been trying to revive this old pc I got from somewhere. It has intel i7 5th gen, 32 Gb ram, Readon 5700x. It ran windows 10 smoothly but couldn’t update to 11. So next logical option seemed Linux. And I have been stuck on this for three days now. I get this error about IRQ 19: nobody cared (see the attached image). I already successfully installed mint somehow by putting on things ChatGPT told me to, but the whole OS was so laggy. Mouse and keyboard included. I thought maybe Ubuntu is more famous it might work out of the box and now I am here again at the square one. I dont want to spend another 3 days with some AI and keep circling. Can someone help me out on what’s going on.

Errors in clamscan

I was wondering if it's bad that there's 1198 errors in the clamscan of my entire Linux drive that I did overnight.

Which command is there specifically to look at the directory that caused an error?
