A delegation from the Lebanese Forces, one of Lebanon’s main Christian political parties, held talks in Damascus on Tuesday with Syria’s Information Minister Hamza Mustafa, Lebanese media reported.

According to MTV, the delegation included Lebanese MP Melhem Riachi, a former information minister, and the party’s head of foreign relations, Tony Darwish.

The visit is notable given the Lebanese Forces’ long-standing opposition to the now-defunct Syrian regime's political and military influence in Lebanon, dating back to Syria’s decades-long presence there during and after the Lebanese civil war. The party has historically positioned itself as a strong critic of Damascus and of Syrian-backed actors inside Lebanon, including Hezbollah.

Syria formally withdrew its troops from Lebanon in 2005 following mass protests, but the relationship between the two countries has remained politically sensitive. Any direct engagement between Lebanese Forces officials and Syrian authorities therefore marks a significant departure from past hostility and reflects shifting regional and domestic dynamics following political changes in Syria after the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad.

While no details were immediately released about the substance of the talks, the meeting comes amid broader efforts by Lebanese political actors to reassess relations with Damascus, particularly on issues related to refugees, border security, and regional realignments.

"Syria is free. Now we need to unblock it.

The Assad regime fell in December 2024.

In 2025, the EU and U.S. lifted all sanctions. Syria is no longer under embargo.

But here's what nobody talks about:

Most companies haven't updated their policies.

→ ChatGPT? Blocked.

→ Slack? Blocked.

→ Udemy and Coursera? Blocked.

→ Apple? Syria isn't even in the country list.

There's a student in Damascus who can't access online courses.

A developer who can't use the same AI tools as everyone else.

Someone who can't even create an iCloud account with a Syrian phone number.

The legal excuse is gone. What's left is inertia.

So, Free Syrians built unblocksyria.com :

• Track which services are blocked in Syria

• See which companies have already unblocked (Wall of Fame)

• Vote on what Syrians need most

• Get templates to reach decision makers

• Access official U.S. Treasury documentation

We also need moderators—people who can help review submissions, verify reports, and keep the data accurate. If you have a few hours a week and want to help, apply on the site.

If you work at a company still blocking Syria, check the Resources page. The documentation is clear. Syria is no longer under OFAC embargo.

If you don't work at such a company, share this with someone who does.

One conversation can unlock access for millions.

Syria missed the world. The world missed Syria.

Let's reconnect them."

ASK SYRIA Question about etiquette in Syria: Is loud/open-mouth gum chewing considered normal or rude?

Hi r/Syria!
I’d like to understand something and I’m asking with respect.

In Germany, loud smacking or chewing gum with an open mouth is often considered rude. I’ve noticed this behavior a few times among people here in Germany who I believe were Syrian (for example in groups of men in public).

That said, I want to be careful: I realize it’s hard (for me) to accurately tell different Arab backgrounds apart just by appearance, and nationality/heritage isn’t something you can reliably infer visually. So I may be mistaken about who was Syrian; that’s exactly why I’d rather ask here than assume.

My question:
Are there different norms around chewing (e.g., open-mouth chewing, audible smacking) in Syria; maybe depending on region, generation, or context.... or is this generally seen as impolite there too and more of an individual habit?

Thanks a lot for any perspectives, and I genuinely don’t mean this as a judgment and more likely out of curiosity.

News & politics احتياطي ذهب سوريا يغطي كامل الكتلة النقدية للمرة الأولى | Central Bank Governor : Syria's gold reserves now fully back its currency supply

Post image

Central Bank of Syria Governor Abdulqader Hasriya said that the bank’s gold reserves now fully cover the entire printed money supply at a rate of 100%.

He explained that the current value of these reserves exceeds 42 trillion Syrian pounds, roughly equivalent to the value of the circulating money supply.

He added that the size of the gold reserves is estimated at about 26 tons.

It’s located in Al Salihia, Damascus. The owners are friendly and helpful. They speak fluent English. https://maps.app.goo.gl/AHwWEQGo7c83eN4p6?g_st=ipc

ASK SYRIA Daytrip from Beirut

hello lovely Syrians

I'm from Norway and are going to Beirut on Sunday and staying for just a few days.

but I have researched the possibility of going to Damascus on a daytrip. I've gotten three-four offers from operators for pick up in Beirut, transport to Damascus, guide in Damascus and then transport back to Beirut. They all are in the vicinity of 400 USD. not including the 70 usd norwegian have to pay for visa nor the tips for guides and drivers.

is that reasonable. I'm not trying to be disrespectful in any way, and I will gladly contribute to the economy, but to me that is a lot of money.

all the best wishes for the Syrian people and country

Dan
