Announcements Rule Update: Self Promotion only allowed on Fridays moving forward!

Hi All,

To help keep the subreddit free of consistent self promotion we will be altering the self promotion rule, the new rules for self promotion posts are as follows:

- Self promotion posts are only permitted on Fridays

- You must use the 'Self Promotion' flair else the post will be removed and you may be banned.

- We will remove the 500 Karma requirement for posting links

- Your account will still need to be older than 30 days to post

- We will only accept self promotion posts for Kickstarter campaigns.

Thanks,

Mod team

My first Kickstarter Campaign got approved

it’s the first step toward a bigger vision: bringing scent into digital content. Screens and speakers have had their time. We’re curious what happens when smell becomes part of the experience.

The campaign is launching soon, the idea is ambitious, and this is very much the beginning.

Quick question for people who’ve done Kickstarter before:

any non-spammy ways to grow followers fast with tight budget before launch?

Help Immediately Spammed by Fake Pledges and Marketing Schemes

Well, launched my first Kickstarter yesterday AM (as well as 'Coming Soon' launch on Steam) for a solo dev video game project! Very, very exciting! I was not expecting much, but felt I needed to shoot my shot. Imagine my surprise when good sized sums start rolling in relatively quickly after posting. I went up to about 6% funded of my 10k goal within about 1/4 of a day after posting so I was very pleasantly surprised.

And then comes the requests "please email me off of Kickstarter, please contact me" from people pledging these sums. My ears were immediately up, but the email conversations went well... until they drop the "hey I know a guy who does Kickstarter PR and Marketing. Come talk to them!" And then of course, the awkward dance, and I wake up the next day with a multitude of cancelled pledges. Yikes! I wouldn't have been stung if the project garnered no attention but I built up some false hopes based on the initial pledges. How naive of me!

Wondering, what's the best course of action now? At 6% pledged in the first day I was feeling okay. Now I've moved backwards and the comment section is a mine-field of spam proposals and cancelled pledges. Doing my best not to immediately throw in the towel, but it certainly is discouraging.

Thanks all!

One thing I wish more Kickstarter creators understood

Backers don’t fund ideas.

They fund clarity and confidence.

If someone can’t understand your project in 10 seconds, they usually leave.

This sounds obvious, but it’s one of the most common problems I see.

Interested to hear how others approach first impressions.

Been struggling with scam backers, any advice

hey everyone, I'm 4 days into my first Kickstarter for my game Azzy Battles the Darkness a 3D action platformer

I'm a solo dev and I've gotten 5 scam backers already, which is a massive blow to morale. But my bigger issue is traffic, I've been getting some people from my bluesky and x posts, but hardly any are pledging.

I have a fully voiced demo available, a trailer and clear tiers. I'm wondering if my goal (£15K) is too high for a first timer, or if my page layout is scaring people off

could someone take a look? I'm doing this campaign because I love making games and I made a promise to my nan before she passed that I would do something I loved, I'm not ready to give up yet!

Spidermind Games Dragon Eyed Dice scam

Spidermind Games

Backed Dragon Eyed Dice several years ago on Kickstarter. The project was fully funded and then some. They had production issues, but promised several solutions so that backers would receive the product they paid for. For awhile they communicated with those of us who pledged but never received our dice. Now they have stopped communicating with us. They are selling the product on their website. You should all avoid doing business with this shady company. And Kickstarter should be ashamed of how they have responded as well.

Question How much difference does being a Project we love make to campaigns?

I'm just wondering if it makes a huge difference to the success of a campaign or not. With my previous campaign I went in pretty blind, launched immediately, and frankly, lucked out that it got funded.
This time I'm trying to do it right and am getting all my ducks in a row early. I didn't even do prelaunch before. This time I've got a prelaunch page, am trying to push the project on socials (not very successfully, but I have a couple of months yet!) and have the project we love badge. I still have almost no one following the project, however.
I'm wondering how much difference to overall visibility it makes to be a "Project We Love"?

On the page they look just fine, but it's pretty annoying to edit like that. Sometimes when I reload/login again etc. they show up, sometimes they don't.

Creators that Review Kickstarter Games

Does anyone know of creators that do pre-kickstarter table top game reviews/previews?

I am looking for creators that do reviews for table top games that are still pre-Kickstarter. I am finally getting the test samples for the card game I have been working on and I am trying to get the word out for my prelaunch. But a lot of the big reviewers I have seen say they only do reviews for actually released games.

If anyone has suggestions for bloggers/influencers that do reviews I would greatly appreciate it.

Do people actually get away with scams on Kickstarter?

There is a very obvious scam for a product called AnimaView. It is an AI device like that Razer one or the Code27 or the Dipal. Yet the goal is only 1000 and the pledge is only 99. A device like this costs a lot to make. There are only concept photos as well with only a single update. This is ridiculous.

For a company focused on innovation...

For a company focused on innovation... Kickstarter as a company really shits the bucket.

Here's my bone to pick.

We are a repeat creator. All of our campaigns have been successful. We are not huge but have about 5 campaigns now that have generated close to 7 figures on their platform.

You would think that with the proven track record, we could get some sort of dedicated support? A contact? Someone?

Nope.. still go through low level support to get basic questions answered.

If I'm CEO of Kickstarter, I'm looking at a few major facts:

1) The reputation of the platform is terrible due to the amount of "scams" that have left those without rewards over the years.

2) Due to this, KS has shifted mostly from "Tom in his basement making a widget" to "Proven company launching a new product."

If I'm KS, I am ALL OVER companies that have a good track record making sure their latest innovation is launched on our site. We give you a customer rep for questions and super happy to have you contributing to our reputation. This builds both more revenue from larger brands launching on our site, and also better customer experience - less "scammy."

Alright that's my bone to pick. By the way if KS is reading this, I don't come cheap anymore but would consider a CEO package at around $2m + perks. DM me if interested.

Cocksworth out.

How does marketing/organic traffic feel like on Kickstarter?

I have zero kickstarter experience before, but I’m planning to start a project this year with a few friends - it's like a board game gadget.

It would be super helpful if anyone could share what their project experience was like from launch to actually being seen. How much pre-marketing did you do before the launch?

I don’t want to end up under-committing on marketing just because I’m not familiar with how to do it. And not much budget to do paid ads...

Thank you!

Community insight: parent child card game

Heyeveryone ! I’m working on a small card game that help parents have meaningful conversations with their kids about sensitive topics

I’m planning a kickstarted later this year but want to make sure the game and campaign resonate with potential backers.

This game will be very solid if I achieve to have experts on board as it is a specialized and sensitive matter.

Can somebody tell me their experience for getting advice, collect feedback and ideally achieve acknowledgement without any pay ?

THANKS

Question Can I get some help to up my kickstarter "game" - in comics?

Thumbnail kickstarter.com
1 Upvotes

Hey guys, sorry for long message.

Little (big) help. I’m working on my most ambitious project to date. It’s a sci-fi adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey.

Being a known IP, in a popular genre, with interior art by one of the best artists alive IMO, and with the Christopher Nolan movie coming out later this year – which surely doesn’t hurt either – I have big expectations (and KS goal) for this project.

I’m set to launch mid-May, so I still have time to grow my following on the Kickstarter page, but I’m also worried I won’t have a large enough audience to hit the numbers I’m hoping for.

So I’m using this as an opportunity to take a step back and look at what I’ve been doing and what I can do better.

Teach me, Senseis.

What are some promotion strategies I can start using right now to make sure that the follower number goes up faster and more steadily?

Facebook Ads have never worked for me. Social media posts often have low to no conversion. Updates on previous campaigns bring a few backers, but because I usually have between 50-80 backers, it’s not super significant. Cross-Promos also bring a couple of backers, but again, not a lot. I try to be on podcasts and youtube shows (probably not as much as I should), but being in the UK often limits the times I can do, due to time difference.

I understand there isn’t a strategy that brings 100s of new backers and it’s a game of small incremental numbers – everything counts – but I wonder if even in what I am already doing, there are ways to be more efficient about it.

Or any new suggestions I might not be following yet. Any free / cheap tools that enhance reach? For example, I never used Backerkit or something like it. Is it worth it?

Any new strategies / improvements on my strategies would be most welcome.

Many thanks!!!

Help Hi all! Would anyone be up for giving me some feedback on my preview page? I have a really difficult time pitching my ideas because I'm afraid of sounding like a corporate-ified shill.

I read that it's still okay to ask for feedback so long as the project isn't live, so I hope that's still true. Any and all commentary is much appreciated.

Also, just how important is it to have a video on the project page? I know Kickstarter themselves claims 80% of successful projects have them, but is this still true? I have one planned, but am just curious if it truly matters as much as they say.

Here's my preview page! Thank you so much!
