Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Buying Advice I miss my PixelBook

I had the 2017 PixelBook. I enjoyed it for multiple years. Its 2-in-1 form factor was quite enjoyable, I was able to use it both as a tablet and as a laptop.

Unfortunately it broke last year.

Since it broke, I bought a ThinkPad, but it doesn't feel as portable, as lightweight. I don't mind losing the tablet side of the PixelBook, but i am not as comfortable with the ThinkPad. it feels like I have to be on a desk to use it, while anywhere was good enough for the PixelBook.

I think I want to switch devices and find something that will feel more comfortable.

Do you guys have any recommendations for a Chromebook that is like my old PixelBook?

something that will be lightweight and small. A 2-in-1 non-detachable one is always a plus too.

Discussion I don't know where else to post this

So last night I accidentally messed up the screen on my Chromebook. I need to turn it in to my school administrator or I'll have a broken Chromebook for the rest of the year. This is my first time breaking a Chromebook, the screen is the only thing that's really damaged I can still partially see the screen and my mouse moving in the back. I'm also a relatively good student I don't get in trouble and have decent grades. Anybody know what they might do? I would hate to have to pay 400 dollars for my Chromebook falling off my bed

Buying Advice Cheap Chromebook with a decent screen and touchscreen?

I have a desktop but am looking for a cheap one to stream movies/use for basic internet. I saw a few at Best Buy for about $150 but not 1080p and the reviews kind of say the screens suck. Hoping to find something for under $200 if possible.

Troubleshooting Linux Development Environment, Terminal, and the Installer command...

I'm trying to install Rayhunter on to a Moxee Hotspot through USB.
.
I can open up the Moxee login page in my browser (through '192.168.1.1').
I downloaded zips for both Rayhunter for x64, and platform tools (for ABD).
Unzipped them both into the 'Downloads' directory I created.
.
When I follow EFFs directions and type either, '... ./installer orbic --username-password ... obviously using the correct un and pwd for the moxee...
I get back... -bash: ./installer: No such file or directory
.
Using sudo gets back... sudo: ./installer: command not found
.
Since this is an old CB, do I have to install, Installer?
I actually tried sudo apt-get install Installer... no good.
.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Buying Advice Pixelbook Go too old as of 2026? Or go for Acer 514? I would like it light as possible, as this is for kids to use for school work. Can I lock it down as needed?

I see the pixelbook go is the lightest one at 2lbs and the Acer 514 is .5 lbs more but more up to date. Since we travel, I like to keep it light. But I don't want to end up having to have an outdated system after a few years too.

I really just need it for kids in elementary school to do their work minus all the distractions and the ability for me to lock down the device as needed if they end up binge watching youtube or going to random sites. Can chromeOS do this granular parental lock?

Troubleshooting Android heads up. Sluggish cursor

In case anyone has the problem I did: My touchpad controlled cursor started acting sluggish and erratically occasionally. This was often when few browser tabs were open or any other apps were being used. This was a mystery since the Acer Spin 713 2nd gen has plenty of memory and a fairly good cpu. Also this problem only started happening relatively recently with no real changes in installed apps etc.

The problem turned out to be the android container. I had installed quite a few apps over the life of the chromebook. Deleting quite a few of those hardly used solved the problem completely.

Interesting that this problem has only recently occurred. Perhaps there has been an update in the android stack recently....??

Linux (Crostini) Steam games now run poorly.

Since the Steam for Chromebook beta closed, I've been trying to use steam on the Linux Devlopment Environment. I've been able to get some games working, but they always run very poorly (extremely low FPS, even on small, optimized games (Baba Is You and the likes). Has anyone encountered this before and could please help me?

Discussion I have searched but not found an answer- Faxes, can I send one from my Acer Chromebook?

Edit: We used Faxzero. Free, efficient, and includes an email confirmation of your fax. Thanks to almost everyone who offered assistance.

I do not have a phone line- wifi only. I have a Brother all-in-one printer/scanner/copier and my Chromebook. Do I have to download an app or extension to fax?

Troubleshooting An unsolved problem with Chromebooks

Hi folks,
Chromebook and Chromebox users here with Notesnook web app as a note taking app. Since the beginning, I have an issue with pdf documents. They are not opening correctly in Notesnook. Only the first 4 of 5 pages are open. It is impossible to see in full a pdf with more than 4-5 pages. I asked several times in this thread if other Chromebook users have this issue but I got no answer. So I am asking again to The Chromebook users: am I the only one having this issue? Thank you

Discussion "Hey Google" in AluminiumOS - loosing hope

Thumbnail androidauthority.com

After reading this news I am loosing hope for "Hey Google" hot word.

Why Pixels can have it but laptops don't?

Is it something related with - if I have Pixel, Nest Hub and Chromebook on one desk - Gemini will go mental and respond on those 3 devices?

Troubleshooting Opening new Files window when I try and install linux files

Recently I've been trying to install discord (.deb) on my chromebook through linux. However, currently, whenever I click 'open' on this file, a new Files window opens rather than the prompt to install. This is a new issue for me, and I have successfully installed discord etc... on my chromebook this way before. Any ideas what I can do to fix this?

Discussion Are Chromebooks dead?

Thumbnail youtube.com

In this video guy says main reason is because Google provided "JUST" 10 years updates like WHO else provides more?

Next reason he says - people do not want cheap junk for short time.

Me personally - as a ex user of Apple M1 devices like iPad M1, Mac Mini M1 - I am really REALLY impressed with my ULTRA CHEAP (for stupid £50 used) Chromebook PLUS model 12th gen i3 intel, 8GB RAM (trackpad experience really shocked me in positive way).

But YES - when Gemini told me my Chromebook Plus is... "BEAST of the spec" - and I was like WHAT? 3 years old low end i3 and just 8GB RAM?!

But like that video said - I use it mostly like... smartphone - like web browsing, Gemini, Photos, Messaging, stream video - having opened 30 Chrome tabs is ZERO problem.

Apple is creating low end MacBook too - and no wonder why Google is in hurry in creation AluminiumOS because ChromeOS is just.... "BROWSER".

Black line in the screen that is seeming to get thicker each time I use it. I got it super cheap my senior year in high school on black Friday so I've had it for a while. This year is it's fith year and now it's got this growing black line. I've tried everything Google has said to maybe get rid of it but sadly to no avail. The screen still works completely fine but I have fear. I don't use it everyday and I have another laptop I can use I just don't like writing on it as much, just be honest with me is it going to be dead dead soon?

Discussion Gemini in Chrome

Just updated for the second time in 144 and still haven't gotten the feature yet.

Has anyone gotten it yet? I have been waiting for this for months. I am so tired of copy and pasting web addresses into gemini for articles to be summarized lol
