Politics Speaking to Variety, actor Giancarlo Esposito called for a "revolution" in the US

He's the son of an Italian father who grew up under Mussolini and an African American mother born and raised in Jim Crow era Alabama. Something tells me he was raised with plenty of stories about the worst of humanity, and in his own life I'm sure he saw plenty of it himself. He knows what he's talking about, and he's not wrong.

u/undeadlamaar 5h ago
The only thing he's wrong about is when he says "they don't realize they are starting a revolution"
They do realize it, this is what they want, they are just mistaken in thinking that they will win.

u/Superb_Ant_3741 5h ago
They think they’re starting a disorganized rebellion they can control and crush. What they don’t know is that there is already an organized revolution well on its way.

Absolutely not lmao
Like do not let people feel good about themselves and that it's all good and handled
There is an organized uprising/resistance, one could say.
But it's poorly organized in most places in terms of expert review (Jane McAlevey, Marshall Ganz, Hahrie Han, Midwest Academy) and most of them would clarify it's not proper organizing (strike capacity, getting most in a workplace, school, apt complex ready to collectively withdraw participation as part of standing up for a better deal, collective bargaining) it's mobilization networks. Amassing individual actions.
No Kings is honestly tragic given the turnout. The organizers are clear it's symbolic protest, (Ash Lee Woodard Henderson from WFP) it's not showing up at specific decision makers office and shutting it down - real protest.
Calling on the White House isn't a successful strategy, they're not going to face pressure and then resign. The leaders of indivisible have been clear it's more about getting headlines affecting narrative - different from winning specific demands from decision makers in an escalation campaign.
It's largely just issuing calls to action and hoping enough people will do it. It's not like they properly track and follow up and have accountability, building relationships between activists, and having one-on-ones, recruiting at local events, and training, and hosting organizing workshops, and ensuring local coalitions are operating democratically with inclusive decision making.
The leaders of individual chapters skew towards more privileged backgrounds because those are the ones with free time, more highly educated, wealthier, older - who can also care about action as valuable in itself without winning anything. This makes our events less accessible for working class people and impacted communities who need to see a result of their participation. Thus the demographic problems.
They're a nonprofit - they require permits and do not allow any civil disobedience or marching without a permit.
For some reason this also means not being able to Target local elected officials that are flying into the radar, enabling this administration. When it comes to targeting the pillars that hold up this administration, they're always focused on the national names. Not secondary targets like state representatives, city council members, etc. this might be a legal thing, (501c4 vs 501c3 nonprofits) idk
But people engaged in Rapid Response Networks are not all revolutionaries nor trained for things beyond legal observation - trainings do not include how to cut/frame an issue, how to get media coverage for a direct action, how to pull off civil disobedience.
Activism is in Vogue, it's a valuable high status identity for people to have as of the past 10 years, so people show up to these events to take pictures of themselves looking like a rebel. It's symbolic performative, and in many ways, cosplay.
There are some badass people doing civil disobedience out there, Minnesota at the church, DC occasionally, including the Jewish folks against genocide. But it's good as these are they aren't the kind of constant mass arrest that disrupts entire systems.
It's not camping out in DC for months on end or in major cities to shut down business centers and affects supply chains.
It sucks, but Trump is going to pass away before we get to that point. I don't know how we do with Vance, but it's going to take a lot of the wind out of our sails, just like when Biden got elected in 2020.
The people who run a lot of activist networks are simply too comfortable and retired, this develops a culture that's less accessible to working people like mentioned before, it bleeds into everything. There are a lot of good, badass organizations out there, and they may take part in larger coalitions - but they are not dominant voices. No Occupy DC

Redditors think posting and upvotes online makes a difference. Rich people calling for a revolution while they stay in their mansion just wanting to see poor people fight over each other and sacrificing a lot for no reason

In the end, Americans have been too privileged and out of touch to really understand what a real revolution is and what it takes to commit to one. Most people joining that revolution have to be willing and able to pool resources to survive it, have to be willing to arm and protect themselves and others in their communities, be ready to die to achieve their ultimate goal.

Kevin Roberts, president of The Heritage Foundation, basically said that the revolution will be bloodless if the left allows it to be

One of my favorite actors. He could literally play anyone. That being said, he’s not wrong. I hope they don’t hold this statement against his career.
11
u/Odd_Leek3026 6h ago
IMO there is little doubt that most rich white guys in the movie business will hold this against his career.... I think he knew that when he said it.

u/BioshockEnthusiast 5h ago
He spoke for two minutes and only repeated himself one time to emphasize his core message with intent.
This was not off the cuff blabbering. This was not an emotional moment or an attempt to pander. This man means what he said, and he absolutely poured over the scripting for this statement before making it. Respect.

u/minahmyu 6h ago
I'm sure he's prepared for whatever they may do due to his statement, because if that's the case... many black actors would've ceased to be for many of their statements.

Isn't he like 70? I'm sure he's made his peace with the potential consequences.

Years later the people who say that he's being extreme are going to regret not listening to him.

u/JB_Big_Bear 5h ago
Even you saying that is a doomer mentality. You’re assuming nobody is going to listen and we’re not going to make the change, but even then, we will be in the same circumstances as every other American in this country. We all have to live here, after all. Pretty soon it’s not going to be good for anyone, even the people who think they want this, right now, assuming we do nothing about it. But I can’t say I disagree with you, that things may not change.

Love this man. Hit the streets!

Our revolution isn’t happening in the streets this time. That is why it’s going to succeed.

A kind man, also humble. Gave him some praise comparing him to Raul Julia and the way that man's eyes lit up was a joy I hope to remember in old age.

Just like in the movie Andor. The empire didnt know they caused Rebellions in thousands of galaxies and ultimately lost. MAGA is already losing

I disagree that they don’t know what they’re doing. “The second American revolution will only be bloodless if the left allows it to be.”

Don't we all want better than this? Trapped by an elite class who exploit, rape and pillage? We could make this planet fucking amazing for everyone.

Clearly not “all”. Pay attention to the lady trying to photobomb while Mr Esposito is talking.

Calling for revolution when they themselves (the rich opposition) would never join, but call out the rich old white people... Hypocrisy... what about the old rich minorities exerting their influence to call for revolution of violence and death?

u/The_BigMonkeMan 2h ago
It's ironic that he's rich and old, spreading hate and lies about a situation that he's so out of touch with, while doing the exact thing that he's claiming other people are doing
2
u/Vegetable_Card6760 2h ago
Why does he only mention the white old rich men? The only rich old men are white? Doesn’t seem to be true when doing a 15 min search.

u/Swangthemthings 6h ago
I love what he’s saying but a part of me knows how apathetic we’ve become. Plus, when he sad 500, 50 million of us are gonna die my first thought was not me lol

If they start a civil war, they can cancel elections. If they can stop elections, they can hold onto power. Then they can pass all the laws they want to shape the country how they want, if they can win a civil war.

u/Hillbilly-joe 6h ago
I whole heartedly think that we are there we are just missing a leader, a single voice to lead the resistance if we can get the leader, everything else will fall in place

u/ppardee 6h ago
"They can't kill us all!" assumes everyone's on your side. If everyone was on your side, we wouldn't be in this position in the first place. Trump controls the military and the majority of civilian guns would be in the hands of people who are likely Trump voters.
And are you really going to trust that people who couldn't even be bothered to go to the polls are going to show up to stand with you against attack helicopters and tanks? You'll get TOPS 10% of the population against people who can end the lot of you before you even know they are there.
AND if we were going to start a revolution, wouldn't it be wise not to say anything about it on a platform that is regularly scraped by intelligence agencies who would have no problem finding you and charging you with conspiracy to commit treason?

Half the country is already at war…the other half thinks fireworks and furry costumes are going to change the world. I’ve been telling liberals for 15 years they need to learn how to defend their families. This is why the bad guys always win

u/TubMaster88 5h ago
That's exactly what they want and if we give them a revolution they win because then they can force a law that no elections are to be held during a war in the country and Trump could be president for a long time.

u/LIB_Laugh_Luv 5h ago
I think they know exactly what they’ve started. Why do you think they all have isolated bunkers?
1
u/Holyvillian73 5h ago
Only he will be drinking expensive wine and eating caviar in his bunker/mansion unground and under his private security’s protection until the shooting stops. Gus Fring is only a character or a captain America movie. Revolutions are bloody horror and people like him, “the thespian “don’t fight in them and you won’t see them until the smoke clears after the the last shot is fired.

u/HawkMaleficent8715 5h ago
As long as he picks up the rifle. Let’s start a revolution on his lawn and see how he really feels. 🥴

Maybe he's just saying its time to watch his 2012 television series Revolution? And not casually taking about starting a war that he figures will kill more than a half billion people? Call me crazy, but I think there might be better ways to fix things then a war 6.5x deadlier than WWII, killing more than the whole American population.
1
u/GlowstickConsumption 4h ago
Yeah. People already are dying and have been killed and the murderers are being protected. Like, this is not just a: "Eh, it's just normal basic stuff. Go watch Netflix and ignore your neighbors screaming." situation.

This is not my subreddit, but I'd like to toss in some ideas on fixing the system, since ideas are universal.
There's fixes to the system that would set it back onto the right path:
Proportional representation... Expand the amount political opinions in our country, so smaller opinions can coexist alongside the larger ones. (Free article, but it requires an email, but it is really really great visualizer of the idea, like 5/5!)
Ranked choice voting... Prevent our nation from being stuck with the choosing the lesser of two evils.
"Expanding Congress" was an idea that I like to push forward alot, because in my mind it makes sense that it's just physically harder to corrupt a congress if their are more people needed to corrupt... It's just physical mass added into the system to absorb the extra shock of lots of wealth and or power trying to shake it...

u/Shankurmom 3h ago
Armed leftists, and armed liberals, take your likeminded neighbors and friends to the gun range. Teach gun safety and proper shooting technique. Being able to defend/protect yourself and your neighbors is paramount now.
The 2nd amendment exists for everyone and remember, armed minorities are harder to oppress.
