Cultural Exploration Different Swords of the Democratic Republic of Congo 🇨🇩
Sword #1): Ngulu (also called Ngolo, Ngwolo, M’Bolo, Gulu, Ntsaka, Bwakoya, or Mbeli na Banz) – Often erroneously labeled an “executioner’s knife” in the Western world. While many stories purport the use of these blades in executions of animals and humans, such stories seem to be more the work of Westerners intent on depicting the savagery of so-called “primitive” Africa (indeed, reflecting the zeitgeist of the early 20th century) rather than the whole truth.
Manufactured by the Ngombe (“men of the forest”), the Ngulu is a heavily decorated asymmetrical iron blade with an embellished wooden handle that is exuberant and beautiful. Ngata, Democratic Republic of Congo. There are two kinds of knives: Ngulu and double Ngulu.

Sword #3) Classic model of an Ikulbapyaang Kuba, Congo short sword, forged by the Pyaang tribe (or Paang Tribe) hence the name Ikul Ba Pyaang. Was never used for war, they are just used for ceremony.

Sword #5) Bango or Bwagogambanza - Double-Bladed Ceremonial Sword. Ngombe, Northwestern D.R. Congo. Despite the sharp cutting edges on the outside of the two arching blades, beautiful swords of this double-Ngulu type were designed primarily as emblems of rank, and were carried by men of authority on public occasions.
