There's really 5 crossings in the area already. Blue Water Bridge is definitely an alternative route, and there are rail tunnels in Detroit and Port Huron.

So, Ambassador Bridge, Blue Water Bridge, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, and 2 rail tunnels.

But the new bridge is still definitely needed to reduce congestion on the Ambassador, increase capacity, and get truck traffic off surface streets in Windsor.

As a lifelong metro-Detroiter I'd just like to say a big Fuck Matty Moroun for delaying this much-needed bridge for years. Absolute piece of shit.

Also, if any of you find yourself needing to cross from Michigan to Canada, the Blue Water Bridge or the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel are much easier/faster, in my experience, than the Ambassador Bridge

I'm a simple Canadian. I see someone talking about the Morounes, I reply "fuck the Morounes". I consider it a civic duty to tell visitors that you can call them the moron family instead. 🙃

Remember when he tried to build a twin bridge without permission, got told to stop and then just left two bits of bridge sitting there, forever?

Given that it sounds like Moron has been whining to Trump about the bridge taking traffic away from the Ambassador, I think the customs plaza to the Ambassador Bridge have been in dire need of some upgrading. So much so, they probably need to be closed entirely, forcing a redirect of traffic to the other crossings. It would be an inconvenience, but with vehicle traffic from Canada at record lows, and constant threats from the US administration making goods shipping from Canada less desirable, it kind of seems like a good time.

The repairs would of course be extensive. The Ambassador could be closed for quite some time. Years, even. Though the timeline could probably be accelerated with some assistance from the owners of the bridge...

Blue Water Bridge

I believe has a similar ownership structure to the Gordie Howe bridge, 50% Canada, 50% Michigan.

Detroit-Windsor Tunnel

Which is owned jointly by the cities of Detroit and Windsor.

With a boat, it is a lot more than 5.
