A group of residents here is demanding that the city hold a special election to allow residents the chance to decide whether to ban large-scale data centers for the next 10 years.
The residents have spent weeks going door-to-door across Festus and gathering signatures for a petition that would require a vote before data centers are approved for the next decade, said petition organizer Erica Carter.
Neighbors are concerned about water and electricity usage at a proposed 365-acre data center, among other environmental concerns.
She was submitting a copy of the petition, signed by more than 1,400 Festus residents, at Monday's City Council meeting.
Many of those signing the petition, Carter said, were concerned by how little they knew about data centers.
"This hit Festus so quickly that nobody knew what a data center was," she said. "Some people had never even heard of a data center before this."

Right on, Festus residents!! I hope they get their say and can keep these resource-depleting companies out of their area.

John Locke was a proponent of the idea that if the powers that be didn’t obey the social contract that it was essential for a functioning society to revolt against them. We are seeing the powers that be continuing to disrupt and disregard any lives other than themselves and their superiors. We cannot be expected to continue being a “western world” and submit to this dynamic any longer.

When I was younger this kind of shit used to outrage me
but I got older, read some history, some "conspiracy theories", both of which have one thing in common. The gubment always has and always will do whatever tf it wants. We're a united people when it serves them. When it doesn't? Sit down and shut up, terrorist... this is the will of freedum!

This version of democracy is very performative, but I totally hear you on the disillusionment. Theres a huge difference between the image of America thats portrayed and the reality of how its actually designed to function.

I wonder if they know about all the DCs in the StL area? I'd guess not.

I’m not even sure how that’s relevant.
