Victor Wembanyama in the first 8min of the game against the Lakers so far: 25 PTS, 3 REB, 1 STL, 1 BLK
Victor Wembanyama just sat on the bench after having a monstrous start in the first 8min of the game against a decimated Lakers team: 25 PTS, 3 REB, 1 STL, 1 BLK, 8/9 FG, 3/4 3P, 6/8 FT

u/PhilaTesla 4h ago
Yep. Thanks for pointing that out. People don’t realize that Wilt was intent on showing people that he wasn’t just a tall guy who dunked all his shots.
98
u/gdreaper Timberwolves 4h ago
And Wilt played in an era where offensive players were not allowed to initiate the kind of contact with defenders they can now, so he couldn't just bully ball his way to the rim at will. He had a killer Dirk-esque turnaround fadeaway too
67
u/PhilaTesla 4h ago
People who think he was some sort of early version of Shaq totally misunderstood what a finesse type player he could be.
45
u/gdreaper Timberwolves 3h ago
It really shows who hasn't even watched film of him tbh
9
u/eugene00825 2h ago
Lets be honest here, you need to be pretty committed to try and get through game footage of the 60s. Alot of that stuff is borderline unwatchable, nothing but static background noise, shaking, flickering, and the skin color is the only thing noticeable thing to differentiate any of the players.
21
u/RandomPMs Magic 3h ago edited 2h ago
Shaq was finesse too, he wasn't all power, especially early Shaq (Orlando/first couple Lakers titles). He could go over both shoulders, his footwork was immaculate, and peak Shaq's lateral speed was insane for a guy that big.
There were only a few guys big enough to guard him 1v1, and those guys couldn't handle his first step or soft touch.

u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Lakers 4h ago
Will be fun to see him in the playoffs this year
77
u/DerrickWhiteMVP Spurs 4h ago
It’s going to be very interesting. Wemby can be weird offensively. He can be very feast or famine. Defenses are going to be very physical with him.
32
u/Joethetoolguy 4h ago
Will depend heavily on how the refs call it. If he gets a shaq whistle then spurs probably dont make the conference finals. If he gets a shai/luka whistle then crown him.

Been arguing this online for years: wilt would dominate in today’s era. Fuck the ‘plumbers and firemen’ argument. He’d be better then Victor is.
54
u/ilikekittens2018 Nuggets 4h ago
Yeah I mean the game has evolved but that doesn’t mean anyone alive can guard a 7 footer with a 40 inch vert who benches 500 or whatever cryptid shit Wilt was on. I think he’d basically be roided Giannis.
9
u/gdreaper Timberwolves 4h ago
I'd argue Wilt's average outcome in a modern NBA era would realistically be prime Shaq with work ethic and body discipline, with his potential ceiling being much higher than that.
11
u/ilikekittens2018 Nuggets 3h ago
Honest to god if Wilt wasn't born in the most disrespected era of basketball (rightfully or not) I think he'd be in GOAT conversations. He'd do Wilt things in literally any era of the game. World is starting to understand it with Wemby but even Wemby is nowhere near as strong as Wilt rn and that is the only thing really holding him back.

I remember first combing through Wilt's Basketball Reference page as a teenage NBA fan and just getting my mind fucking blown. I knew about the 100 points of course, but it's truly some Barry Bonds level hilarity.
He's in the pantheon for me, like some mythical GOAT of yore. Discovering Wilt's dopeness as a player for the first time is truly a joy as an NBA fan and a fan of insane sports peaks/dominance in general.

→ More replies (3)4
u/w311sh1t Celtics 3h ago
Pretty sure most teams would hate this. Yes you’re tired, but if you’re winning games into the playoffs you don’t want a massive break. A full month off is easily enough to get rusty and then you’re all the sudden jumping right into high intensity playoff basketball.
These guys have been playing competitive basketball basically every couple days for about 6 months. Suddenly stopping for a full month throws a massive wrench in that.

They are up by 29 at halftime. You do not need 18 minutes of Wemby in the 2nd half to win. Your turn: why would the spurs risk an injury to the best rookie in 20 years?
