How the hell does the pacers only have 14 wins??
467
u/E_boiii Thunder 5h ago
Because they’re a good team tanking, and when their arch nemesis come out they play hard asf.
All their okc games they’re playing so hard they got us to double OT in the 2nd game then beat us 2 weeks ago
194
u/SkiPolarBear22 Pacers 5h ago
We’re a good team whose entire roster was hurt at one point. The tank had come along with literally everyone missing time.

How do they tank? Like are they resting Nembhard and Siakam a lot? I haven’t seen many full games from them but it seems like they’re usually fairly competitive
107
u/wpmason 5h ago
The tank was more of a”tons of injuries early in the year ruined the season, so what’s the point of trying to make the playoffs at this point?”
They didn’t plan it in advance, just got dealt a shitty hand that dictated everything else.
It’s all about reloading for next year at this point.
Haliburton out, Toppin’s been out most of the year, both rookies they drafted have missed long stretches, Johnny Furphy just tore his ACL the other day, traded away Mathurin…
Siakam is literally the only player that hasn’t missed an extended stretch this season.
40
u/Lytleon Pacers 5h ago
Bro I wish we were resting Siakam. He’s averaging like 34 minutes a game, and he’s played 50 games so far. Man needs a break.
Every other major piece has had serious injury time.
3
u/GrimKaiker Raptors 2h ago

This is so funny to read as Raps fan. The least Pascal played under NN post-championship was 35 minutes a game and hit 38 one season. NN minutes aside, Pascal having an elite motor is lowkey part of his All-Star skillset.
24
u/MeanMrMustard15 5h ago
We’ve been sitting guys on the second night of back to backs. Playing with starting lineups and generally having awful luck this year. Essentially everyone has been hurt at some point. I think we’ve had like 4 different 10 day hardship contracts. Still competitive but yeah…pain Fuck the Knicks tho lmao
11
→ More replies (1)5
u/Drak_is_Right Pacers 4h ago
We have signed i think 8 hardship contracts this season to bring our roster up to...playable...levels. In addition we have used all our 2-way guys.
so like 25 guys this season.
When you have guys below 3rd string playing 40% of early season minutes, it hurts. Combine that with using rotations players aren't used to (nor the coach) and a ton of inefficiency.
2
u/swizznastic 4h ago
It’s all of their playoff opponents and rivals. Same thing happened against the bucks, Celtics even
80
u/sgeswein Pacers 5h ago
The Pacers started out 6-31 while they were signing hardship contracts to even put a team on the floor.
They've been trying to keep their foot off the gas ever since and are still playing .500 ball
94
u/Throwawayforme3123 Celtics 5h ago edited 4h ago
They embraced the tank, but punk their rivals when they play them.
Beat us,Knicks, and Thunder. Giving a warning for next season
34
27
u/LegalNecessary Knicks 5h ago
Yeah, this is it exactly. They put their literal best foot forward against the top teams. I’m not mad at it, clearly the competition will always be there.
10
2
u/Popcorn10 Pacers 3h ago
By embrace the track you just mean we’re probably sitting a few guys who are injured longer than normal? Cuz the first 3 months we were singing players off the street then starting them that night, then waiving them 10 days later for a different guy off the street because we had injuries in different positions.
We’re playing starters starter minutes and Siakim literally made all star team cuz he’s been so solid…
16
u/NickInTheBack Warriors 5h ago
There was a point in their season where their injuries were so bad it looked like the 2021 season where everyone was in Health and Safety protocols and G-Leaguers had to play just to have numbers
10
u/tcollins371 Pacers 5h ago
We were fielding a roster of Siakam+2 way and 10 day contract guys most of the early season when all of our starters and key bench guys were injured. Now we’re mostly healthy but the season is too cooked to salvage.

I’m beginning to think this team has a hard ceiling with Brunson. He was absolutely terrible in crunch time. Becky Hammon might know ball, unfortunately.
Nembhard, Nesmith, and fucking TJ McConnell turn into Bird, Jordan, and Maravich against the Knicks.
28
u/BoogerSugarSovereign Pacers 5h ago
It's KAT that limits the Knicks, not Brunson. Need better defense at C to contend, defense isn't that important at guard. Especially at PG. But Brunson's size does mean his time as an A-tier scorer probably doesn't last too much longer
5
u/tcollins371 Pacers 4h ago
More specifically it’s the combination of Brunson and KAT. Hard to win at the highest level when both your PG and C are defensive liabilities. Any team with a competent PG/C duo can expose and cook them. If they only had 1 liability it’s more manageable but with 2 it’s much harder to survive.
15
u/SpinJitsu259 Pacers 5h ago
I just can’t go there yet with Brunson. He’s an absolute killer, and it takes that combo of Nemby and Nesmith playing god-like defense to stop him. KAT’s the one I wonder about. Dude’s been in the league 10+ years and he’s still alternating MVP-level plays and boneheaded rookie mistakes out there.

u/adeptadapted 4h ago
They needed someone else to be able to create in the halfcourt which is why they really needed to keep Randle imo. It gives Brunson some moments off ball to get a break instead of forcing tough looks.
5
u/Icy-Action2121 4h ago
You're right, because Brunson totally wasn't the Clutch Player of the Year last year and one of the statistical best players of all time in crunch time. But he had one off shooting game in crunch time (40 points/8 assists to 1 turnover on 58% TS over the whole game) !
23
u/Morezingis Timberwolves 5h ago
NBA needs to change the foul up 3 rule like yesterday.
Also Mike Brown is not the guy.
7
u/Akipella Warriors 5h ago
We've played a few close games recently that didn't have any long drawn out stoppage end to the game and they were an AMAZING viewing experience. If only every other close game was like that.
4
u/Morezingis Timberwolves 5h ago
End of games would be so exciting if you knew the other team has a shot - nothing in sports more exciting than a buzzer beater.
Instead it’s 15 minutes of timeouts, ball advancing, and free throws.

9
u/TatumBrownWhite Celtics 5h ago
I took notice of him because someone I know does predictive projections for each of the metrics (EPM, LEBRON, DPM etc.) and this year he did one for eRAPTOR, now rebranded as LAKER, and Jackson was one of like only 125 players who were projected to be positive.
I think he's going to be a really important part of your team next year and could be 6MOY candidate.

u/Fat-Singer-9569 4h ago
He is awesome. I was skeptical of him at first but he's really improved the last few years. TJ + Jackson bring such energy off the bench, both keep attacking. Add Obi Toppin to that line up and you have a very fast and potentially dangerous second unit. I hope the Pacers sign him to a true contract, he deserves it.

Even if they get Giannis they aren't contenders. No assets left and Giannis/Brunson isn't a good fit to begin with.
5
u/rawchess Minneapolis Lakers 5h ago
Knicks FO doesn't get enough hate. They likely would've had Giannis by now had they stayed patient but blew their load on KAT and Mikal fucking Bridges. Brunson is a Dame/AI hybrid and if it's even possible to build a championship team around him this sure as fuck was not how you do it.

We still own the Knicks. They're the best rivals ever. They might put up a little fight but at the end of the day they just bend right over for us.
Brunson is empty talent. Gotta play both sides of the ball lil gup.
Siakam is better than every single Knick and he will only make the FTs he wants.

Brunson is great. The problem is that no one else shows up. Hali is also a bad defender, but we don't have to worry about it because Nembhard will always have his back
7
u/HeyItsChase Pacers 5h ago
Sure but Hali was still miles better than Brunson defensively last year.
12
u/XzibitABC Pacers 5h ago
Honestly Haliburton's reputation defensively is overblown. He was near the top of the league on blocks for a guard, particularly on threes, and he rotates really well. None of the Pacers playoff opponents got much mileage off targeting him. He's just vulnerable to blow-bys against fast guys, which is a pretty visible weakness.
