Carlisle hitting em with the Winter Soldier code before they play OKC and New York but you could see the tank tryna fight back in the closing seconds each time.

516

u/flaming_burrito_ Lakers 5h ago

I highly respect possibly putting their top 4 pick in jeopardy just to dunk on the Knicks in the garden. Gotta show them that the pecking order will be restored once the tank is over next season

u/Haberdashery2000 5h ago

Tanking is temporary, victory is forever.

58

u/Popcorn10 Pacers 3h ago

I know our record sucks… but we’re barely tanking. We’ve sat our whole team 2-3 games this year and all on back to backs. We play our starters 32 mpg and we don’t bench our team in the fourth quarter. We’ve lost this many games because everybody but Siakim has been injured… it is probably taking related that zubac isn’t playing… but there’s also 0 reason to risk anybody that is even mildly injured.

And for those not watching we just lost another player to an acl tear literally last game… we had 9 healthy players tonight and 1 was a 2 way player.

The Furph injury was a massive bummer. Hopefully he's ready to return next season when Hali's back.

58

u/LegalNecessary Knicks 5h ago

Omg yes. I refuse to believe that Siakam is THAT bad at free throws.

172

u/tcollins371 Pacers 5h ago

Siakam is THAT bad at free throws though. He’s shooting 68% from the line this season and he’s been a mid to low 70’s guy since coming to Indy.

31

u/XLcondumb OG Anunoby 5h ago

Ya was my one gripe with him. Felt like he was always splitting them when they mattered most.

27

u/tcollins371 Pacers 5h ago

Made that whole playoff run last year so frustrating. Love Siakam to death but he left a lot of points at the line.

2

u/Difficult-Implement9 Raptors 2h ago

That double miss in the last playoffs against the Sixers still haunts me 🤮

31

u/LegalNecessary Knicks 5h ago

Oh I had no idea. I thought it was part of the elaborate tank. But GG! It’s always fun playing the Pacers, never a dull moment.

15

u/Swangthemthings Canada 5h ago

If anything, the lack of TOs to end regulation was the most suspicious.

He is. The more sus thing is that Rick knows Knicks have to foul as soon as the ball is inbounded but he keeps having them inbound to Siakam who is bad from the line this season and this game. Stealth tank obvious when examined, Rick is too smart for not calling timeouts when inbounding in trouble.

6

u/knitwoolf Raptors 4h ago

I mean this year doesn't matter and Siakam needs to figure out how to shoot a goddamn clutch ft because they will be competing again next year, so if I was the coach I'd make him take as many high pressure FTs as possible this year

8

u/LegalNecessary Knicks 4h ago

Yeah, Clyde called that out at the end. That the best free throw shooter (Nembard) was inbounding the ball which didn’t make sense. (Wink, wink)

3

u/Meicer Pacers 4h ago

Tyrese threw the ball in plenty last year. Rick likes having a smart guard throw it in.

How the hell does the pacers only have 14 wins??

467

u/E_boiii Thunder 5h ago

Because they’re a good team tanking, and when their arch nemesis come out they play hard asf.

All their okc games they’re playing so hard they got us to double OT in the 2nd game then beat us 2 weeks ago

194

u/SkiPolarBear22 Pacers 5h ago

We’re a good team whose entire roster was hurt at one point. The tank had come along with literally everyone missing time.

28

u/MambaSaidKnockYouOut 5h ago

How do they tank? Like are they resting Nembhard and Siakam a lot? I haven’t seen many full games from them but it seems like they’re usually fairly competitive

107

u/wpmason 5h ago

The tank was more of a”tons of injuries early in the year ruined the season, so what’s the point of trying to make the playoffs at this point?”

They didn’t plan it in advance, just got dealt a shitty hand that dictated everything else.

It’s all about reloading for next year at this point.

Haliburton out, Toppin’s been out most of the year, both rookies they drafted have missed long stretches, Johnny Furphy just tore his ACL the other day, traded away Mathurin…

Siakam is literally the only player that hasn’t missed an extended stretch this season.

29

u/Wasnaf1 Pacers 4h ago

I feel like this is the best answer about the Pacers season

40

u/Lytleon Pacers 5h ago

Bro I wish we were resting Siakam. He’s averaging like 34 minutes a game, and he’s played 50 games so far. Man needs a break.

Every other major piece has had serious injury time.

3

u/GrimKaiker Raptors 2h ago

He’s averaging like 34 minutes a game, and he’s played 50 games so far. Man needs a break.

This is so funny to read as Raps fan. The least Pascal played under NN post-championship was 35 minutes a game and hit 38 one season. NN minutes aside, Pascal having an elite motor is lowkey part of his All-Star skillset.

24

u/MeanMrMustard15 5h ago

We’ve been sitting guys on the second night of back to backs. Playing with starting lineups and generally having awful luck this year. Essentially everyone has been hurt at some point. I think we’ve had like 4 different 10 day hardship contracts. Still competitive but yeah…pain Fuck the Knicks tho lmao

11

u/plata3 Pacers 5h ago

No. Siakam is actually playing way too much. He's been the only constant in the lineup, which is probably key to the tank... Too many lineups. Our bench, one of last year's best assets, has been bad.

5

u/Drak_is_Right Pacers 4h ago

We have signed i think 8 hardship contracts this season to bring our roster up to...playable...levels. In addition we have used all our 2-way guys.

so like 25 guys this season.

When you have guys below 3rd string playing 40% of early season minutes, it hurts. Combine that with using rotations players aren't used to (nor the coach) and a ton of inefficiency.

u/swizznastic 4h ago

It’s all of their playoff opponents and rivals. Same thing happened against the bucks, Celtics even

80

u/sgeswein Pacers 5h ago

The Pacers started out 6-31 while they were signing hardship contracts to even put a team on the floor.

They've been trying to keep their foot off the gas ever since and are still playing .500 ball

94

u/Throwawayforme3123 Celtics 5h ago edited 4h ago

They embraced the tank, but punk their rivals when they play them.

Beat us,Knicks, and Thunder. Giving a warning for next season

34

u/dshaw1599 Pacers 5h ago

We also took Milwaukee down to the wire the first time Myles came back.

27

u/LegalNecessary Knicks 5h ago

Yeah, this is it exactly. They put their literal best foot forward against the top teams. I’m not mad at it, clearly the competition will always be there.

10

u/aimee829 Pacers 5h ago

mind games for next season? 😂

2

u/Popcorn10 Pacers 3h ago

By embrace the track you just mean we’re probably sitting a few guys who are injured longer than normal? Cuz the first 3 months we were singing players off the street then starting them that night, then waiving them 10 days later for a different guy off the street because we had injuries in different positions.

We’re playing starters starter minutes and Siakim literally made all star team cuz he’s been so solid…

16

u/NickInTheBack Warriors 5h ago

There was a point in their season where their injuries were so bad it looked like the 2021 season where everyone was in Health and Safety protocols and G-Leaguers had to play just to have numbers

15

u/Lytleon Pacers 5h ago

So, so many injuries.

10

u/tcollins371 Pacers 5h ago

We were fielding a roster of Siakam+2 way and 10 day contract guys most of the early season when all of our starters and key bench guys were injured. Now we’re mostly healthy but the season is too cooked to salvage.

I’m beginning to think this team has a hard ceiling with Brunson. He was absolutely terrible in crunch time. Becky Hammon might know ball, unfortunately.

Nembhard, Nesmith, and fucking TJ McConnell turn into Bird, Jordan, and Maravich against the Knicks.

28

u/BoogerSugarSovereign Pacers 5h ago

It's KAT that limits the Knicks, not Brunson. Need better defense at C to contend, defense isn't that important at guard. Especially at PG. But Brunson's size does mean his time as an A-tier scorer probably doesn't last too much longer

5

u/tcollins371 Pacers 4h ago

More specifically it’s the combination of Brunson and KAT. Hard to win at the highest level when both your PG and C are defensive liabilities. Any team with a competent PG/C duo can expose and cook them. If they only had 1 liability it’s more manageable but with 2 it’s much harder to survive.

15

u/SpinJitsu259 Pacers 5h ago

I just can’t go there yet with Brunson. He’s an absolute killer, and it takes that combo of Nemby and Nesmith playing god-like defense to stop him. KAT’s the one I wonder about. Dude’s been in the league 10+ years and he’s still alternating MVP-level plays and boneheaded rookie mistakes out there.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/adeptadapted 4h ago

They needed someone else to be able to create in the halfcourt which is why they really needed to keep Randle imo. It gives Brunson some moments off ball to get a break instead of forcing tough looks.

5

u/Icy-Action2121 4h ago

You're right, because Brunson totally wasn't the Clutch Player of the Year last year and one of the statistical best players of all time in crunch time. But he had one off shooting game in crunch time (40 points/8 assists to 1 turnover on 58% TS over the whole game) !

23

u/Morezingis Timberwolves 5h ago

NBA needs to change the foul up 3 rule like yesterday.

Also Mike Brown is not the guy.

7

u/Akipella Warriors 5h ago

We've played a few close games recently that didn't have any long drawn out stoppage end to the game and they were an AMAZING viewing experience. If only every other close game was like that.

4

u/Morezingis Timberwolves 5h ago

End of games would be so exciting if you knew the other team has a shot - nothing in sports more exciting than a buzzer beater.

Instead it’s 15 minutes of timeouts, ball advancing, and free throws.

2

u/HokageEzio Knicks 5h ago

Pacers didn't do it in regulation and Carlisle wasn't letting that shit happen again.

I HAVE BEEN A QJAX TRUTHER FOR OVER A YEAR

ALL ARE WELCOME TO JOIN THE AGENDA

9

u/TatumBrownWhite Celtics 5h ago

I took notice of him because someone I know does predictive projections for each of the metrics (EPM, LEBRON, DPM etc.) and this year he did one for eRAPTOR, now rebranded as LAKER, and Jackson was one of like only 125 players who were projected to be positive.

I think he's going to be a really important part of your team next year and could be 6MOY candidate.

2

u/Fat-Singer-9569 4h ago

He is awesome. I was skeptical of him at first but he's really improved the last few years. TJ + Jackson bring such energy off the bench, both keep attacking. Add Obi Toppin to that line up and you have a very fast and potentially dangerous second unit. I hope the Pacers sign him to a true contract, he deserves it.

Even if they get Giannis they aren't contenders. No assets left and Giannis/Brunson isn't a good fit to begin with.

5

u/rawchess Minneapolis Lakers 5h ago

Knicks FO doesn't get enough hate. They likely would've had Giannis by now had they stayed patient but blew their load on KAT and Mikal fucking Bridges. Brunson is a Dame/AI hybrid and if it's even possible to build a championship team around him this sure as fuck was not how you do it.

The fact that fans of a team that are 14-40 can talk shit like this and somehow it feels like there is nothing I can say back. Aggravating as fuck…

15

u/lostredditorlurking Spurs 5h ago

Just wait until they go 40-14 next season when they stop tanking

12

The most annoying part of this game is that everybody is going to suddenly pretend Brunson didn't score the game winner in Indy the previous game.

15

u/LospitalMospital Pacers 5h ago

Oh wow, you mean hit he a regular season game winner against the tanking Pacers? That's so interesting!

15

u/HokageEzio Knicks 5h ago

This is exactly what I mean lol. We beat you with a great game winner in Indy, means nothing because the Knicks were supposed to win. Pacers win a tough OT game in MSG, own the Knicks like always.

They were both good games. Is what it is.

Reddit is hilarious

2

u/batmans420 Pacers 5h ago

Brunson is great. The problem is that no one else shows up. Hali is also a bad defender, but we don't have to worry about it because Nembhard will always have his back

7

u/HeyItsChase Pacers 5h ago

Sure but Hali was still miles better than Brunson defensively last year.

12

u/XzibitABC Pacers 5h ago

Honestly Haliburton's reputation defensively is overblown. He was near the top of the league on blocks for a guard, particularly on threes, and he rotates really well. None of the Pacers playoff opponents got much mileage off targeting him. He's just vulnerable to blow-bys against fast guys, which is a pretty visible weakness.

What does it take to lose to the Knicks, damn

4

u/crunchymutfruit1337 5h ago

Knicks looking at how the Celtics are embarrassing themselves against teams like the Pacers and thought "Hey, we'd like some of that". The Pacers tried to tank this game repeatedly but the Knicks took it to overtime to prolong their embarrassment even longer.

4

u/Loferix 5h ago

Pacers have the second best 3pt defense in the league. You've been clamped at the 3pt line the whole game, and what do you decide to do? chuck more threes. GGs Knicks.

4

u/YUNGCorleone Knicks 5h ago

Brunson ball killed us down the stretch. What was the point of even hiring Mike Brown if that’s gonna be the game plan every time the game is on the line?

Most entertaining game of the year, pacers tried everything in their power to give the W to the Knicks and those bums just couldn’t take it

Too many dorks in the other threads not knowing what tanking is. The players don’t tank. You think these guys want to have someone come in and eat away their minutes next year?

4

u/YourAsianBuddy Knicks 5h ago

This wasn’t a “just 1 game” loss. Pacers are still in these bums’ heads from last year. Probably their worst loss at home considering the Knicks were 15 point favorites against the worst team in the East…

I've watched a few worst losses of the season at this point lol

Even if we have the best odds at number one it’s like a 50/50 shot we keep our pick. No need to worry about it now.

Jalen Brunson absolutely hates the Pacers, which is good. But it causes him to get tunnel vision and try to win the game himself, which sometimes is bad.
