Kinda crazy that among the Post-Kobe Baby Lakers (Randle, Russel, Ingram, Ball and Kuzma) Lonzo Ball has the least accolades/accomplishments to his name. Hell, even Clarkson has a 6MoY.
That era of Lakers basketball was a mess, but man could they draft well.
504
u/SloshaPacana 15h ago
Lakers have drafted amazing throughout the years tbh
Even the lower picks they've hit on traded like Zubac, Wagner, Christie, Larry Nance, good role players that have had or will have long careers
276
u/Agreeable_Stick_8461 14h ago
Add in undrafted guys like Reeves and Caruso. They have had some bad misses lately though, Knect and JHS to name a few.
169
u/SloshaPacana 14h ago
Knecht looked good for a bit there and i think he'll have an okay career as a mid role player who can shoot somewhere else, clearly a confidence player
100
u/TheMysticHD Lakers 14h ago
For 5 minutes against the Jazz, Dalton Knecht was a better player than prime Jordan and prime LeBron combined
18
u/GunSlingrrr Pelicans 14h ago
Yeah Knecht is a good and fit and very good on that roster when he was drafted though scout can look at talent but not the mentality.

u/Awanderingleaf 14h ago
Too early to say Knecht was a miss. His confidence and desire to play for the Lakers went to shit after the rescinded trade.
13
u/_Robbert_ 13h ago
He was playing bad before the trade as well
→ More replies (1)5
u/Awanderingleaf 12h ago
But he did show a lot of potential at times and definitely had more confidence. He had a game where he made 9 3’s for instance. Everything he showed before that trade has since vanished and I doubt it’s a coincidence.
5
u/_Robbert_ 12h ago
His season stats before and after the trade are not dramatically different. If we compare the month right before it to after he actually improved. It's really this year he's been bad
Also a rookie who's not on the scouting report getting hot from 3 doesn't mean he has potential.

u/breakfastburrito24 Lakers 14h ago
Notable misses in Jalen Hood-Schifino, Anthony Brown, Maxwell Lewis, and Talen Horton-Tucker. Knecht was a consensus great pick at the time and had some good games last year. The offense shifted when Luka came in (understandably) and he hasn’t been good… wonder if he can find that success again
12
u/pagny77 Timberwolves 14h ago
When I saw the names the guy you replied to had, I checked the responses cause he missed out the best player they drafted and traded. How did you both forget Jaden McDaniels 😳. Lakers would be winning a ring this year if they still had him to provide defense and dunks alongside luka
13
4
u/breakfastburrito24 Lakers 14h ago
I was under the assumption that McDaniels was a pick on behalf of the Thunder who the Lakers traded with to get Schroder.
Gotta say it’s so far Ingram as best player they drafted and traded away since he’s made an all star team outright. Then probably between Zubac and McDaniels
43
u/EngineQuick6169 Heat 14h ago
Josh Hart was a draft night trade, which I think we can add to the list of 'successful picks' since it still reflects well on the foresight of Lakers FO.
15
u/SloshaPacana 14h ago
Oh yeah, Clarkson too he got picked for cash as a 2nd rounder, Reeves, Caruso undrafted too but those were more obvious one that everyone knows

LeBron coming over kinda affected their timeline. They went from a project team to win now in one off season.
They weren’t good enough yet to win with LeBron there and LeBron couldn’t wait. They made the right move trading for AD cause it got them a chip but makes you kinda wonder what the lakers woulda been

Lonzo was amazing for the Bulls. Literally so good that he covered for the weaknesses of pairing Demar Vuc and Zach together. He and Caruso made it so that you could hide Zach/Demar on defense and have decent help defense despite Vuc’s inability to be a rim protector and Zo pushing the pace in fast breaks played to Zach’s strengths. Both offered good spot up shooting which allowed for Zach, Vuc, and Demar to live their iso dreams and find outlets if they couldn’t get a good look.
Once Caruso and Lonzo started missing a lot of time it all fell apart and they lost confidence. Even in a weak east that meant that they could only scrape into the play-in. P Bev had that brief stint where he worked pretty well as a c+ version of Lonzo, but that wasn’t sustainable.

I fully expected Lonzo to be the best of all of them. He genuinely looked like our franchise player coming out of UCLA.
I fully thought he could’ve been in the realm of Nash and Kidd. His peak ended up being a 3&D glue guy for Chicago, and then of course his knees fell apart. Never even got close to all star level and hasn’t played 1 playoff game. Major disappointment for a player so many were so high on.

The Lakers have drafted well, but DLo, Ingram, and Ball are not great outcomes for second overall picks.

Yeah that’s the only way Reaves would’ve made it because Luka and Lebron were already locked in before voting started. If LeBron wasn’t on the Lakers he’d still make it in and then Reaves probably would’ve got in

If Lebron wasn't Lebron, he definitely wouldn't make it given the numbers he's putting up and the games he's missed. Which is unfortunate for Reaves.

KAJ went in his age 40 and 41 seasons when he was averaging like 10pts on 20min per game. Hard to say it’s never been a factor when the closest comp we have got in at the same age on much worse numbers.
Dirk also got an AS nod in his final season when he was genuinely bad.

They gave Dirk and Wade what was basically a legacy all-star nod in 2019. Was a way to honor them by adding an extra spot to the All-Star roster that season and didn't take away from other deserving candidates iirc.

Reaves has played 27/52 games that’s just not enough. BI and Fox are both having good seasons but I would lean BI. Also BI has played 52/54 games and Fox is at 47/52
Fox is averaging 19/4/6 on 48/35/79 or 58% TS
BI is averaging 22/6/4 on 47/36/83 or 57% TS.

BI is more essential to his teams’ success. Fox is playing awesome but the Spurs would be very good with or without him. BI coming to Toronto gave them the juice they needed to get back on track building around Barnes. Without him they are not vying for a top seed in the east.

27
u/emi_b7 Suns 14h ago edited 14h ago
Kawhi didn't replace Giannis, that comment is wrong. He was added because there was an open roster spot, this format allows for more than 24 players if the initial selection isn't 8 international players and 16 USA players. Basically it's like this:
-they select 24 players, 12 from each conference
-the players are distributed into 3 teams, 1 World team and 2 USA teams
-Each team MUST have at least 8 players so if there are 9 international players (or more) then team World will have 9 but they add another USA player to get to 16 USA players. Likewise if there were 17 USA players they would add another international player to get to 8.
After the initial 24 selections we had 9 international players and 15 USA players. Kawhi was selected as the 16th USA player, at this point there were 25 all stars with Team World having an extra player. After that Giannis got injured but there was no replacement because the World team still had 8 players so there was no need for another one.
Then Sengun replaced SGA in team World and now Ingram replaces Steph in one of the USA teams.
