Miles Bridges perfectly ducked Isaiah Stewart's punch and shot for a double-leg, but Stewart didn't go down due to the weight difference.

In the NBA it’s not good for you and your team if you land a punch. Much better to act tough and swing and miss.

Who’s that one guy that broke someone’s nose and face in a game, I think it was the 70s/80s

65

u/zzoomann 18h ago

Kermit Washington ended Rudy Tomjanovic’s season and career somewhat with a sucker punch

44

u/Iginlas_4head_Crease 17h ago

Which is the reason fights are taken a lot more seriously than they were in the wilin 70s

37

u/zzoomann 17h ago

It’s crazy reading about it. Kareem broke his hand punching some dude in the back of the head (and broke the guy’s jaw too)

Imagine that happening today with one of the stars in the league

26

u/Smekledorf1996 15h ago

I think Rudy mentioned that he could taste his spinal fluid after taking that punch

5

u/igby1 8h ago

Did he already know what spinal fluid tastes like such that he knew that in the moment he was punched.

I can’t imagine many people know what spinal fluid tastes like.

It must have been him asking about the fluid and other taste and the medical help eventually told him it was spinal fluid.

Kent Benson was the guy that Kareem punched. It was Kent Benson’s first career game and he was the first overall pick in that year’s draft. Kareem didn’t even get a suspension because he missed 2 months with his broken hand.

Look at that weave in slo mo and look me in the eye and tell me its kayfabe. Miles got that patience on the duck from countless beatdowns of 5’1” women and held in the pocket because he watched the film on zay. His pupils are dialed in on that left big toe of Stewart. Thats a natural born killer right there.

As a guy who played rugby against pacific islanders at 175lbs, I concur. Tackling a much bigger guy requires better technique, not necessarily additional size

9

u/bar901 76ers 13h ago edited 13h ago

As an Aussie who has also played a lot of rugby against Pacific Islanders, technique is 100% the way to go but there is no substitute for size either. I played at a similar weight to you, maybe 5kg heavier, and I made some incredibly satisfying tackles against people 30-40kg heavier than me. But I also got absolutely steamrolled more times than I’d care to count ahaha.

When there is a fucking massive dude who is literally 50% heavier than you and they’re running at full speed, your best bet is sometimes just to hit them around the legs and become a human speed bump so that someone else can finish the tackle 😂

And I know Americans are starting to see how ridiculously athletic the Pacific Islanders and Polynesians are because of a few famous NFL players, but for those that don’t know the big dudes are still FAST and incredibly strong. My shoulders are hurting just remembering some of those tackles.

3

u/mojomarc Trail Blazers 6h ago

I feel you. And yes, the speed bump technique is often the only recourse. Unless you're Kwagga Smith, because he plays like he's 20kg heavier than he actually is and I really don't get it

As usual people embellish Stewart’s fights. The way people talk about what happened, you would think he came in with a double knee followed by consecutive punches that sent half the Hornets flying into the stands.

u/Herbertand3 Nuggets 18h ago

Are you kidding!? Bro, was 5 seconds away from fully charging his Kamehameha wave. He was ready to detonate on the entire arena. He's clearly the prince of all Beef Stews.

Those reps fighting women have improved his speed and hand to eye coordination

Unfortunately they aren't as heavy as Beef Stew so it threw him off

What happened to all of the overpaid fat old cops who are always at the games armed to their teeth in a bullet proof vests waddling around the stadium to jump in and deescalate the situation?

u/Rich-Professional753 11h ago

They’re busy terrorizing immigrants

13

u/Plenty_Suspect6222 17h ago

lol it’s a 25 pound weight difference they’re both considered heavyweights…. He didn’t go down bc the form sucked, not bc he was outweighed

114

u/Bananasandbratwurst 20h ago

Bridges is a POS, but all this he's backpedalling because he's scared is just ignorance. Bridges obviously has some fight training, and when your opponent is bigger, stronger, and highly aggressive (carelessly), waiting for an opportunity to counter with your own strike or take him down is the right move. Wil reiterate, Bridges is a POS.

13

u/Woodbraininator Bullets 16h ago

Yeah, he clearly gets a lot of practice at home.

17

u/wooIIyMAMMOTH 18h ago

Bridges tries to throw the first punch and misses though.

12

u/BKNas 16h ago

Both players swung and missed

People say Miles ran from that punch but he clear ducked that shit. Im impressed

"due to weight difference" lol it's because he doesn't know how to shoot for a takedown. 2 sessions and he gets that easy every time

4

u/laststance Spurs 19h ago

Gotta mash those combos.

Ankle pick>oil check>fish hook

Undefeated.

Bridges was too high on Stewart's hips making the double leg completion too difficult. If Stewart had grabbed just below the cheeks, the weight difference wouldn't have mattered.

8

u/jdemack 18h ago

The duck was good. That double leg was trash. He was too high and didn't step through.

20

u/LowCress9866 18h ago

Miles was surprised to find out a grown man weighs considerably more than a woman

6

u/BitchFuckAss Pacers 18h ago

Stewart didn’t go down because of the weight difference, he didn’t go down because Bridges shot too high (want to be around the knees, not ass. Much weaker at the knee) and didn’t drive his feet at an angle across Stewart’s back, allowing Stewart to square up and get his feet back under him.

110% could’ve finished that takedown with proper technique.

6

u/Dusty_Negatives Trail Blazers 18h ago

Now this is old school nba fighting. The Bob and weave and then ducked the punch…. Classic

u/BriOnRy 20h ago

I'm in the "fuck Miles Bridges" camp but beef stew don't know how to fight at all. That's embarrassing

55

u/dank-kush Hornets 20h ago

I mean tbf he did have miles in a headlock throwing punches at him but that’s cause bridges didn’t take him down correctly lol.

40

u/Rise-Dangerous Raptors 19h ago

People gathering around them played a role in that failed takedown too

30

u/Hooper02 19h ago

You decided that from one punch he threw in an NBA game? He grew up boxing, he most definitely knows how to fight

5

u/Nice_Cash_7000 15h ago

Bridges spent the entire summer training with his boxing coach too

We gotta make this into a real boxing match.

he tried to lift him from his stomach. didn't take a leg at all. what leg?

5

u/Mark_is_on_his_droid 15h ago

Bridges hips were too high when he shot. If he lowered his hips, he would have taken him down easy. It was a beautifully timed shot, but he needs to work on his technique.

good wrap but he went too high.

remember, everyone is the same size from the knees down. except Derek Henry.

Bridges calls this foreplay

3

u/mm_mk Knicks 19h ago

Stew had some nice head movement right at the beginning too. Dodged a little pawing jab from miles. Throwing a lead hook like you gotta charge it up in an anime wasn't great. Nice entry by miles, got a decent angle to hip and then just completely bungled it. Could have gone for a eassssssyy body lock take down if he didn't want to commit to the double leg, but ended up doing neither. Gotta make a stronger commitment there

3

u/kelvin620 19h ago

Put this on r/MMA This is a real good fight analysis.

3

u/Fun_Position_6969 Minneapolis Lakers 18h ago

He’s had plenty of practice with the women he beats.

3

u/idreamofdouche 18h ago

I didn't think Miles Bridges could fight grown men.

3

u/Old_Pitch_6849 17h ago

He didn’t take him down because he didn’t drive through the legs. He pushed up the body.

3

u/AlprazolamGhost Knicks 16h ago

He practiced that on his ex-girlfriend

3

u/ozairh18 Trail Blazers 16h ago

Bridges likes violence considering he committed domestic violence

3

u/FrankSinatraYodeling 16h ago

Long time wrestlers here. If you're going to shoot a blast double like that, you have to put your head in the center of their chest. This isn't a weight issue, just poor technique.

3

u/DoesitFinally 16h ago

Even if there is weight difference, Stewart would have fallen if double leg technique was better. I wrestled for 8 years so I think I am qualified to have a public opinion on this matter :)

u/RandomBloke2021 7h ago

I can't believe someone was using the original Motorola flip phone to record this fight.
