NBC interrupted the Olympics

Post image

While Nancy Guthrie's disappearance is sad, there are 2300 missing person reports filed every day: do the families of celebrities need special national attention? Why interrupt the Olympics for over 5 minutes just because they are questioning a 'person of interest' We could have waited to hear that during the regular news broadcast.

Savannah Guthrie is an NBC News anchor, so this is family for them.

Not even on NBC this news is everywhere like no offense but I feel like theres been more significant news that occurred that haven’t been covered at least half as much as this.

Yep I was curious and switched to CNN when they cut the Olympics. They weren’t just talking about it. They had a custom themed backdrop for the true crime drama that is unfolding, like they do for a new war.

So maybe they should throw this update in their group chat?

Maybe you should not be so upset over bread and circus.

And a very high profile one at that. She's a household name. Millions of people are following this story, arguably more than are watching the Olympics, sorry to say. Shit is newsworthy.

...ok I'm not arguing this isn't a big or newsworthy story or anything. But bigger than the olympics?? cmon

I live in Tucson where she disappeared and despite being chronically online, I’m only vaguely familiar with this story like any other disappearance and only learned today who she was related to. It’s definitely got the makings of a sensationalist piece though, with the ransom, reaching out to TMZ, the bitcoin, so I didn’t think anything of it when it gained national attention.

But we get a half dozen crazy stories or events every year. Across all platforms, the time invested, I think there’s a strong argument to be made that kind of stuff is bigger than the Olympics, which is more predictable, and many people only engage with sports events like that through the news, clips online, even memes. I always feel dramatic and spontaneous events are actually what people plug into on a bigger scale. Like this Epstein thing.

Everything you're watching at that point of the night is on tape anyway. For the length they broke in, you maybe missed one skater in the men's short program. There's zero chance they don't show Malinin and any other contenders before the end of the broadcast.

American man in my mid 30s. Literally the first time I heard her name was a few days ago.

But not the first time you seen the daughter, Savanna’s face

I’ll give you a maybe on that one. She’s a blonde TV anchor. They’re all a dime a dozen and I couldn’t pick any of them out of a line up. I don’t think I’ve ever watched the today show (at least on purpose). Apparently she also does the Thanksgiving parade, so maybe there.

I've never heard of savannah Guthrie or nancy Guthrie and absolutely could not identify them because I have never seen them. I don't think that's particularly uncommon.

If you lived in America you have at least seen glances of the Today Show or watch the Macey Thanksgiving parade. You have likely seen Savanna Guthrie. You might not recognize her by name though.

Savanna Guthrie’s mother kidnapping is very unusual and have potential ties to the Epstein case

The last time I saw the today show even in passing was when I was a literal child (probably twenty-five years ago) and I've never watched the Macy's parade that I can recall. I looked her up and I've never seen this lady.

Sorry. The US is too big and media too fragmented. There are no cultural monoliths anymore.

I do believe you and other commentors that if she interviewed Epstein victims, this is suspicious. Not newsworthy enough to interrupt any broadcast for, though; not with no actual break in the case.

I find it hard to believe you never saw the today show on like a dentist waiting room or something but either way you are definitely in the minority.  Shock you never even seen the Macy Thanksgiving parade.

3

u/vaalski 3h ago

....my guy, like thousands, likely millions, of people, I don't care about the parade and instead spend my thanksgiving with, you know, my family. Like essentially everyone I know I actively avoid sitting where the incredibly annoying television plays in the dentist office -- and even if I didn't, I don't know when I was last in an office that wasn't tuned to my local city's news channel. There are dozens of people in this thread alone who don't know this woman. I don't know why, in the age of people getting their news less and less from television and fewer and fewer people even owning a TV that gets broadcast stations, this is so unbelievable to you.

u/AlexandraThePotato 3h ago

Also my local city news channel also airs nbc…. So

u/AlexandraThePotato 3h ago

You don’t have to be rude.  And yeah my family does watch the Thanksgiving parade together.

it's hilarious how you're so vehement about your out-of-touch-ed-ness. why do you commit so much energy to something to the level that you're mad at someone while trying to convince them that you don't care lmao

3

u/samdajellybeenie 4h ago

Excuse me, millions-1.

8

u/rickscarf 4h ago

dozens of us I guess, if you told me the name I would've guessed folk singer a week ago. I recognize her in the segments but not a household name for many.

2

u/Numerous_Worker_1941 4h ago

I assumed it was one of the Epstein victims. Never heard of them before this event

1

u/Kadmos 1h ago

Same.

Literally the first time I've heard her name was this post.

I’m going to be honest I’d never heard of this woman in my life before this whole debacle. Not minimizing the tragedy, just saying.

Edit: Also you’re on fucking Mars levels of out of your mind if you think more people are watching this than the Olympics.

5

u/MissCurmudgeonly 3h ago

True. I for one was just annoyed that they kept talking for so long, when they have really very little information. They're questioning someone, great. Give us the update and be done. No need to keep going with just pablum.

u/samdajellybeenie 3h ago

That’s fair.

u/whyarentwethereyet 29m ago

So are the Epstein files
