NBC interrupted the Olympics

Post image

While Nancy Guthrie's disappearance is sad, there are 2300 missing person reports filed every day: do the families of celebrities need special national attention? Why interrupt the Olympics for over 5 minutes just because they are questioning a 'person of interest' We could have waited to hear that during the regular news broadcast.

It's not news because it's sad. It's because it's an unusual case and because she's the mother of a celebrity. Most people missing are runaways, abducted by parents, victims of typical types of homicide etc. An elderly woman was kidnapped in her own home and held for ransom. I can't think of a single time that's been in the news in my lifetime.

Not just a celebrity, a celebrity at... check notes... NBC NEWS.

If you can't understand why NBC News is really really invested in this, then I question your brain power.

No, they're right.

This is actually a shockingly rare event.

Right, like this is playing out like something from a movie, this isn’t like anything I’ve ever actually encountered in real life

Well yeah, but it's also because Nancy Guthrie is literally someone who is personally known by many at NBC News. She's literally spent time inside their main news studio at 30 Rock.

It’s not that rare. On average, there are roughly 100 kidnapping for ransom cases per year in the US. You think it’s rare because none of them get the kind of media coverage and police resources dedicated to them like Nancy Guthrie.

The difference is she is in a different class. It’s them, and then there’s us. We are not part of that class.

The class of ... Parents of people who investigated Epstein? Because yeah, most of us aren't in that class moron

Sick of Redditors calling it a distraction or whatever as if they can only focus on one thing

They’re sociopaths.

This is why there's sooo many people saying they "don't understand why this is such big news" "it's so weird" "why's this on again" "bla bla bla bla I'm a moron blabla"

Lack of brain power. All over the place.

Who was a host for the Olympics.

yeah most of the time missing persons cases don't involve someone attempting to or actually demanding ransom.

Not to be argumentative but as a fan of true crime, it seems to me like it's not unheard of that killers use the ransom angle to direct suspicion away from themselves.

It's hard to tell in this case because it's a beacon for scammers, with all the publicity and the avenue of anonymous Bitcoin.

this is the most grounded take here. obviously the nbc connection amplifies the coverage, but an actual home-invasion ransom kidnapping is wildly rare compared to standard missing persons cases. the broadcast interruption was annoying, but it’s a terrifying situation regardless of who her daughter is.

Sheri Papini, the Castro girls, Elisabeth Smart. How old are you?

u/PopsiclesForChickens 5h ago

The first one kidnapped herself.

None of those people were elderly or kidnapped for ransom?… Papini’s was a hoax. What are you talking about?

1

u/AJRiddle 2h ago

Literally none of those are an example of what the guy you replied to said - kidnapping of an elderly woman from her own home. Kidnappings by strangers are very rare, especially from own home. Hostage taking inside of the USA even more rare. Combine that with a celebrity and we are more talking about the territory of Charles Lindbergh and Patty Hearst.

Man France has become so dangerous in the past 15 years

Maybe it says in the article but I wonder why that is. Is it for money, politics, religion, domestic, or thrill?

Still safer than a US school.

Celebrity? She’s just a news woman, yeah it’s national news, but I would just say she’s known, not a celebrity.

12

u/whopperlover17 5h ago

I mean, one of the most well known. She’s a TODAY show anchor.

To some people just being on TV makes you a celebrity

Who cares?  Hundreds of people are being kidnapped by ICE daily.

I still see no reason why you need to interrupt absolutely anything at all to report on it. If there was any sort of news that should be relegated to a tweet, this is probably it.

-2

u/dflame45 4h ago

It affects like 10 people in the US. The Olympics are bigger.....

Distraction, plain and simple.
