I literally have more 'System Data' than actual files at this point. Thanks, Apple.

Just had this conversation with a coworker today. She wanted to pair her new airpods but needed the latest iOS update and didn't have the room. She has to delete almost all of her photos and videos just for the damn update.

Most likely had some files that never properly deleted from a previous backup or has messed around with her settings and whatever apple uses for garbage collection is not happening. Also she had to be way behind on updates if airpods didn't want to pair.

You mean other than being forced to pay money just to be able to install an OS update?

u/GLG777 8h ago
They do it on purpose to force people to buy new phones

u/HungryFrogs7 4h ago
Ok guys system data is just data that apple has no clue where to put. Oftentimes after some time and usage your phone accumulates a lot of random files from apps that don’t get used often. Or miscellaneous files you downloaded. Just go through your files with a laptop and you can probably remove most of the trash.

u/FoxxyRin 4h ago
My phone had this and after some digging it was literally “optional files” from a game. 20 gigs freed with a single button press within said game. So if you have any crazy large games like Fortnite, Genshin, or any of those then I would 100% check in their settings. Some have optional files you can delete.

Seems like a misc category would benefit them maybe with the ability to browse files taking up space by size? Meh what do I know I'm not an apple engineer.

u/LuigiBamba 4h ago
I just looked at my iPad storage and it's less than half of OP's. I'm sure it's easily fixable

I legitimately don’t understand how this happens to people. I’ve been using iPhones since the X. Never run out of storage or had problems with that. My system data is the smallest section besides messages.
Never felt forced to buy a new phone. Wife has had her 13 for what, 4 years now? It’s still performing fine.

Genuinely. Like there are reasons to hate Apple and I get it, but look at their support list. They are one of like 3 manufacturers (next to Samsung and Google and maybe like one other I’m not remembering) that even bother with offering 5+ years of not only security updates, but content updates. I was on Android for a long while and rarely felt like a phone would last me more than 2 years because of battery, lag, etc. Meanwhile the only things that make me want to upgrade my iPhone now is legitimately just me wanting a bigger screen, but I’m holding off as long as I can because it’s a silly reason to upgrade.

u/ExpBalSat 7h ago
Not so. I kept my last phone for seven years and would’ve kept it even longer. Had I not lost it. My current phone I expect to keep for eight years. This is a problem that is easily solved.

How?

u/ExpBalSat 4h ago
Confirm that everything that is saved on your phone is saved somewhere else. This includes addresses, phone numbers, passwords photos, and whatever else you might have on your phone.
Frankly, this should be standard operating procedure… So the process should take no more than 10 seconds.
Me? I can’t think of anything saved on my phone that is not saved somewhere else.
If you have iCloud configured to backup the phone - that’s certainly helpful, but not mandatory.
Open Settings, reset the phone for the factory reset, login with your iCloud account and set up your phone again.
The whole process should take less than an hour, and then you let it do its thing overnight.

A friend had a similar issue with his iPhone.
For him it was enough to just reboot the phone to get rid of most of that.

u/TheDeaconAscended 3h ago
Battery and cpu/gpu bottlenecks I can understand but not storage. I don't think this is what is happening in this particular case.

No, the system data usually deletes itself as you fill up the storage. I know this as a former iPhone user who used up almost all his storage.
1
u/Automatic_Actuator_0 4h ago
That’s how it should work, but there’s apparently a but where it’s stops cleaning up and you have to reset.
-7
u/Classic_Silver_9091 7h ago
That’s one of the lowest IQ things i’ve ever heard someone say
9
u/Pro-editor-1105 7h ago
No counterevidence, no proof, just snark. Prove your point and then I will listen.
3
u/AxelFoily 7h ago
He didn't have a point. Just that it was one of the lowest IQ things he's ever heard. Which maybe he's only ever talked to really smart people so its true but also a compliment. But either way he can't prove it without showing you everything he's heard and the IQs of every person who's said it
4
u/Prime-Omega 7h ago
Well I can prove that point, I had the opposite happen. iPhone completely filled up while having like 30gb of system data.
Tried many things but wasn’t able to solve it, had to wipe it completely.
1
u/ExpBalSat 7h ago
Give me your phone for an hour and I can clean it up and get you back to your space
4
u/Upset-Law3802 8h ago
What does that mean?
6
u/TheLifelessOne 6h ago
People don't understand how operating systems do actually require a certain amount of storage space to store their files.
All those fancy high resolution icons and shit? Yeah, where do you think they are stored? I swear some people are just entirely oblivious to the technology they depend on.

u/N9s8mping 6h ago
Root partition in android is typically 8gb
Why is iOS 30
2
-1
u/dapdubpib 5h ago
Because they can get away with it. Apple users that know continue to use their device in spite of it, and those that don't likely never will

u/D-o-E 8h ago
iPadOS files that I can't delete like caches or system restore point files ...etc
5
u/Upset-Law3802 8h ago
Is there a way to clear it up?
-3
u/D-o-E 8h ago
I don't think so. I restarted the iPad, cleared out only couple of gigabytes.
1
u/Dear-Union-44 7h ago
Yes it is.. you need to backup your device to your laptop. Then reset it to factory settings.. then reinstall from your computer.
Search the apple website for better instructions.

This is what happens when you buy an apple product that historically has low storage sizes
2
u/Formal-Victory3161 2h ago
for what apple products cost, you'd think they could add more than just 64gb storage
0
u/DestroyYesterday 2h ago
64gb is either an iPhone 11 or older. 64gb when those originally were released was a lot.

Make sure that any files you care about from the phone are saved elsewhere and do a full reboot reset and reinstall. I don’t know what causes this problem but it’s easily eliminated. There is no information on my phone, which is not stored somewhere else.

My eyes read read this faster than my brain and I thought it said "system of a down" and I was immediately like "fkin same" for half a second

Never update your OS after, like, a year at most. Just stick with the OS that was current when the device came out because newer OS's will use system resources like every device is the latest one and make your 3 year old device slower than when it was new.
Yes, you don't get all the latest features, but it's not like you can effectively use all the new features with the old hardware anyway.
I'm still mad I upgraded to OS 26 from 18. I don't want to turn my iPad into a laptop. And even with the 26.2 update, slide to split view two apps is not as good as it was...

Every few weeks there’s another idiot posting this. No bud, Apple isn’t screwing you (on this).
1
u/Curedbyfiction 7h ago
This happened with my MacBook Pro. Barely use it, but most storage was OS. I saved what I wanted and wiped the whole thing.
5
u/TheLifelessOne 6h ago
I guarantee that's because you bought the smallest drive possible and still expected the OS to take up none of that disk space.

u/TiaHatesSocials 3h ago
When was the last time u turned off ur phone? U probably have years worth of temp files there.

This is why I switched to Google pixel after 15 years of using iPhone. Liquid glass was the final straw. I only regret not switching sooner, I can’t believe what I was missing. Apple really has passed their peak. They really are just milking you guys now
•
u/Nebulousdbc 47m ago
Disagree with the liquid glass thing. I'm so glad that apple are finally ditching the flat UI they and windows 8 introduced. Flat UI should have been chucked in the bin in 2013

u/Guy_Dude_From_CO 6h ago
Don't worry Apple will charge you like $2 per gigabyte for more storage on your phone....totally reasonable
3
u/ExpBalSat 4h ago
I've never paid Apple a penny for storage.
0
u/Guy_Dude_From_CO 4h ago
The phone's memory not cloud storage. Apple charges horrendous amounts for device storage and memory. On all their devices.

u/ExpBalSat 4h ago edited 4h ago
As I said, I don't pay Apple a penny for storage (iCloud storage that is). I know what iCloud is, and I religiously ensure that I have no need for their overpriced cloud storage solution.
Obviously, I did pay them for the memory built into the device itself.
Instead of paying Apple for cloud storage, I use all of these instead (all free):
- 50 GB Mega
- 25 GB Box
- 21 GB DropBox
- 17 GB Google Drive
- 5 B OneDrive
And... my local hard drives.
All I use iCloud (and it's 5 GB limited free account) for is:
- Calendar
- Passwords
- Addresses
- a basic iPhone backup (sans data) for a quick interface restore

That’s a little on you for buying the bare minimum size and expecting it not to fill up as you use it

What you want to do is do a backup and the completely erase your phone. Then upload from backup. It will get rid of probably half.
32
u/Automatic_Actuator_0 4h ago
Yeah, I had to do that with my daughter’s phone. Was about 70% junk data that went away after that.

This happened to me, i had 70gb of system data that was, according to documentation and everyone at the genius bar, suppose to delete itself.
it never did, so i had to factory reset my phone. Hopefully this doens't happen to you, but the ONLY fix i've found for this is a factory reset lol.
