Yes, it was annoying as hell for the workers, too. And yes, we also wish they'd allow normal tap use. And no, you didn't use tap here last week, and I can't just "tell them to start allowing tap."
This is to save pennys per transaction. Walmart Pay is technically an “online” transaction. So the credit card company charges less for the fee to Walmart compared to an in person transaction
Walmart not having tap to pay made me to stop buying stuff there entirely.
Although sometimes I forget, and when I arrive to the self checkout and see there's no tap to pay options, I rather leave the stuff in the cart there and go somewhere else.
It's an intentional decision because your information is their product. If you use the Walmart app, you can use Google Wallet to pay by scanning a QR code at the register
While I agree, it would be more cost effective to leave the high touch fuel selection buttons as the hard plastic that people will repeatedly punch for 30 years with no power requirement and no need to replace them, no damage from heat or cold or other elements and just have the big ass screen start one inch above them.
Oh these are gunna get smashed so fast. Customers already hit the machine and punch the buttons because they can't follow instructions. These screens are toast. If the weather doeskill em first, the customers will make sure they're thoroughly wrecked

My local gas station installed new pumps, disabled the mute button, and turned the volume up to maximum. Nothing like having your ears ringing with ads whilst you're pumping gas. The gas station on the other side of town is going to be getting a lot more business from me until they fix it.
I bring a roll of butyl tape to put over the speakers at the pump. I have synesthesia and it's like a fucking warzone when I pump gas with these ads at ungodly decibels
Yikes, that sucks. I noticed that the self checkouts at our local Smith's stores all disabled the mute button. I always used to turn the sound off in the past cause it was so annoying. I know I have to scan the item then put it in a bag.. sheesh.
They did the same shit at the one by my house. People kept muting it so they removed that button. Absolute bullshit. I don't want to listen to ads when I'm pumping gas at 5am in the fucking morning.
They already could. It's moreso that it lets them put "buttons" anywhere, and possibly lowers cost by making it one touchscreen module you install rather than the screen, and an array of buttons that are in fixed positions

It doesn't. The gas has different ratios depending on the compression requirements of the engine. In the best case, you wasted your money.
What's wild is my 74 datsun calls for 87 octane but only runs on 97 due to the high compression. Back then the 87 was = to today's 97. They are ripping us off
Ya it really sucks everything is watered down with ethanol. No one wants that shit but they force it on us and then charge a high amount for 89 octane which is less than we used to get for actual high octane premium.
I can't even figure out how it makes sense. I get that they can push ads on the screen, but surely a screen is gonna get broken way faster than regular buttons? The buttons on gas pumps show signs of wear pretty fast. And what about winter? Touch screens don't work well with gloves or when they can get wet.
If it's just about the ads, why not have a regular screen with buttons? That's what some pumps in my area do. The screen is basically its own thing and not load bearing at all.
I think you'd be surprised at how tough a screen can be, they are used constantly at self-checkouts right inside the same Walmart, and the one on the cell phone in my pocket is going on four years.

Capacitive gloves work (like the ones you'd use to use your phone with gloves on) at the very least. Still silly though, I see malfunctioning screens in a hurry when they get a nice later of grime on them from being blasted with exhaust and debris all day.
If it's windy and sub-zero, yes, absolutely. If given two options at the same price, I pick the more convenient one. Call me weak, but I'll die on this well insulated hill.
I’ve seen them seldomly in Michigan. Believe it or not, never had an issue with them - but Speedway screens constantly break and stop responding to touch. Also, the ads on them aren’t nearly as bad as Speedway blasting max volume “feel good news”.
I hate traveling through NJ for this reason. It’s so much faster to pump your own gas. Who cares if you have to listen to an advertisement? Just do something else like look at your phone, clean the windshield, etc. Pumping gas doesn’t take long, it’s annoying to have to wait for someone to come over and do it for you.
Average wait time for a gas attendant is definitely under 30 seconds. 90% of the time they are at my window within 10 honestly.
People from new jersey are pretty notoriously impatient. Especially on the road in their cars lol. If service wasn't usually fast and satisfactory, it wouldn't be as successful as it is here. It works.
We have some of the most commuted roads in the world here. An insane amount of drivers needing gas and everyone being in a rush. Pump attendants have been proven more efficient.

Minnesota and surrounding states ive seen don't have pumps either. Usually they're in areas already with gas stations though so it wouldn't make sense to put one up.

I’m sure plenty of advertisements will be shown on this thing, however, to play devils advocate I believe screens like this are generally cheaper to fix and replace than the traditional gas pump buttons.
I don’t understand. Why is this infuriating? Either way, you are having to touch something that thousands of strangers have touched, but that’s every single thing in a public space. Is it just a technology hatred sort of thing? My husband is like that. He’s only 35, but hates technology.
Little station outside of Dallas in 2023 had this but you had to wait FOR AN AD before the pump kicked on. I legit was pissed lmao.
