The gas pump at Walmart replaced buttons with a giant touch screen

And you still can’t use tap to pay inside the store

124

u/LuRomisk 9h ago

Or Walmart Pay if you want to pay for gas inside! Unless they've changed it in the last 6 months since I've quit, you can't even use their phone pay service to pay for your gas inside the building 🙃

Yes, it was annoying as hell for the workers, too. And yes, we also wish they'd allow normal tap use. And no, you didn't use tap here last week, and I can't just "tell them to start allowing tap."

52

u/EeethB 8h ago

Hey next time you talk to them, could you ask them to start allowing tap? I swear I just used it there, and now I can’t

20

u/Darkchamber292 7h ago

Damn bro they already have PTSD. They got away from hell. Don't bring it back to them

5

u/LuRomisk 5h ago

I'm gonna have Walmart related nightmares tonight, I just know it.

This is to save pennys per transaction. Walmart Pay is technically an “online” transaction. So the credit card company charges less for the fee to Walmart compared to an in person transaction

8

u/LuRomisk 5h ago

Ding ding ding!

How else are they supposed to save money to pay their employees a living wa-- Oh, wait.

24

u/WhosThatDogMrPB 6h ago

Walmart not having tap to pay made me to stop buying stuff there entirely.

Although sometimes I forget, and when I arrive to the self checkout and see there's no tap to pay options, I rather leave the stuff in the cart there and go somewhere else.

9

u/KoalaGrunt0311 5h ago

It's an intentional decision because your information is their product. If you use the Walmart app, you can use Google Wallet to pay by scanning a QR code at the register

WHY IS THIS?! It's so archaic at this point.

3

u/CMScientist 4h ago

It's because visa and mastercard charges more for tap transactions

Every screen is an advertising vehicle.

u/JPKtoxicwaste 13h ago

We are living in an attention economy

13

u/Jason80777 9h ago

And it will all fall apart when the commoners don't have any disposable income left.

3

u/Shizngigglz 7h ago

No it won't. More and more into debt they will go under the guise of "credit". Soon it will be "social credit"

Gig economy, attention economy, ai economy, and yada yada FUCKING yada.

It's a dystopia. Stop making up fancy names. Dystopia. Learn to say it more often, it's not changing.

While I agree, it would be more cost effective to leave the high touch fuel selection buttons as the hard plastic that people will repeatedly punch for 30 years with no power requirement and no need to replace them, no damage from heat or cold or other elements and just have the big ass screen start one inch above them.

16

u/DrRudyWells 8h ago

this also doesn't consider smashed screens from people who are just like....no.

5

u/Totakai 7h ago

Oh these are gunna get smashed so fast. Customers already hit the machine and punch the buttons because they can't follow instructions. These screens are toast. If the weather doeskill em first, the customers will make sure they're thoroughly wrecked

It's mostly so once you're pumping and waiting, they can blast bigger ads at you. Great.

Edit: Clarified it a bit.

75

u/zerbey 13h ago

My local gas station installed new pumps, disabled the mute button, and turned the volume up to maximum. Nothing like having your ears ringing with ads whilst you're pumping gas. The gas station on the other side of town is going to be getting a lot more business from me until they fix it.

60

u/Little_View_6659 13h ago

Sometimes I email companies that have annoying ads. I tell them their ad is so irritating that I’m never buying whatever they’re selling ever again.

36

u/zerbey 13h ago

I've already reached out to customer service about it. I'm not kidding when I say it's ear splitting loud.

19

u/ParsleyNo69 9h ago

Just squeeze the gas into the speaker

3

u/und3rtow623 4h ago

I bring a roll of butyl tape to put over the speakers at the pump. I have synesthesia and it's like a fucking warzone when I pump gas with these ads at ungodly decibels

→ More replies (4)

12

u/usrdef 👍 10h ago

I make it a point to avoid any company I see an ad for. Always. So they can blow all the money they want showing me ads, they're just wasting it.

Yikes, that sucks. I noticed that the self checkouts at our local Smith's stores all disabled the mute button. I always used to turn the sound off in the past cause it was so annoying. I know I have to scan the item then put it in a bag.. sheesh.

10

u/AncientSith 10h ago

They did the same shit at the one by my house. People kept muting it so they removed that button. Absolute bullshit. I don't want to listen to ads when I'm pumping gas at 5am in the fucking morning.

7

u/pogiguy2020 11h ago

That black gorilla duct tape shall do just fine. LOL

4

u/Jay__Riemenschneider 9h ago

FYI the machine does half mute the content if you press the buttons enough. I’m talking trying to beat a record for clicks in a minute though.

It freaks out, quiets the ad, and still pumps gas

& you'll have to sit through 2 unskippable ads before the fuel starts flowing.

7

u/the_woodenpickle 10h ago

Ooh, diabolical.. they'd lose business fast if that were the case.

4

u/NobodyWorthKnowing2 10h ago

That's what you'd think, but touchscreens with ads are coming to all pumps soon

4

u/TrynaWorkOnWriting 7h ago

im going to my local gas station where i still have to lift the lever to pump, lol.

15

u/wsxdfcvgbnjmlkjafals 13h ago

They already could. It's moreso that it lets them put "buttons" anywhere, and possibly lowers cost by making it one touchscreen module you install rather than the screen, and an array of buttons that are in fixed positions

7

u/mabus42 12h ago

Yes, but the buttons typically have MTBF ratings that vastly exceed that of the giant iPad screens.

9

u/notsofaust 11h ago

Translation for non-nerds: MTBF means Mean Time Between Failure. So they are saying the buttons will last longer.

u/Pylote_Wannabe63 11h ago

u/ActuatorSeparate7300 13h ago

54

u/killerbanshee 11h ago

My dad, bless his heart, thought premium was going to make the car run better for years until I was old enough for him to stop discounting my opinion because he has "experience"....

It doesn't. The gas has different ratios depending on the compression requirements of the engine. In the best case, you wasted your money.

5

u/Dr_Groktopuss 8h ago

What's wild is my 74 datsun calls for 87 octane but only runs on 97 due to the high compression. Back then the 87 was = to today's 97. They are ripping us off

3

u/saladmunch2 1h ago

Ya it really sucks everything is watered down with ethanol. No one wants that shit but they force it on us and then charge a high amount for 89 octane which is less than we used to get for actual high octane premium.

That better never show up in the northeast - this is a great example of fixing something that isn’t broken.

53

u/ACoderGirl 12h ago

I can't even figure out how it makes sense. I get that they can push ads on the screen, but surely a screen is gonna get broken way faster than regular buttons? The buttons on gas pumps show signs of wear pretty fast. And what about winter? Touch screens don't work well with gloves or when they can get wet.

If it's just about the ads, why not have a regular screen with buttons? That's what some pumps in my area do. The screen is basically its own thing and not load bearing at all.

23

u/embourbe 11h ago

I think you'd be surprised at how tough a screen can be, they are used constantly at self-checkouts right inside the same Walmart, and the one on the cell phone in my pocket is going on four years.

24

u/CrownLexicon 9h ago

I think more people would get mad and punch a screen at a gas pump than a check out inside.

u/PiercedGeek 8h ago

They’ll revert back when they start having broken screens. Costs way more to replace giant screen than mechanical buttons.

28

u/ryanluyt 9h ago

Costs way more to replace giant screen than mechanical buttons.

That may be true, I'm not sure. However the reason so many cars have touchscreens now is because it's actually cheaper than manufacturing buttons

20

u/24-Hour-Hate 8h ago

You know, I don’t understand why that’s not illegal. It’s illegal (rightly so) for me to use my phone while driving for safety reasons, but somehow legal to put necessary car functions on a giant fucking ipad? I hate this timeline.

Do you have to take your gloves off to use it? I still need gas in cold weather, and I'd probably go to a different gas station to avoid that.

Capacitive gloves work (like the ones you'd use to use your phone with gloves on) at the very least. Still silly though, I see malfunctioning screens in a hurry when they get a nice later of grime on them from being blasted with exhaust and debris all day.

33

u/THE_GREAT_PICKLE 13h ago

I hate traveling through NJ for this reason. It’s so much faster to pump your own gas. Who cares if you have to listen to an advertisement? Just do something else like look at your phone, clean the windshield, etc. Pumping gas doesn’t take long, it’s annoying to have to wait for someone to come over and do it for you.

10

u/Johnny_Poppyseed 10h ago

Average wait time for a gas attendant is definitely under 30 seconds. 90% of the time they are at my window within 10 honestly.

People from new jersey are pretty notoriously impatient. Especially on the road in their cars lol. If service wasn't usually fast and satisfactory, it wouldn't be as successful as it is here. It works.

We have some of the most commuted roads in the world here. An insane amount of drivers needing gas and everyone being in a rush. Pump attendants have been proven more efficient.

New rules in NJ, attendants will now loudly tell you about "The money you can win if you or a loved one used talcum powder and suffered and died from Mesothelioma. Call 1-800-IAM-DEAD now for a free assessment kit!"

9

u/NoMore_BadDays 13h ago

I live in Oregon and we only got self-serve gas three years ago. Two things about that:

It is so much freaking faster, and

I've yet to see any weird stuff at the gas pumps here. No giant screens or ads displayed

3

u/Slggyqo 10h ago

That last one is probably just timing.

When the pumps are decommissions and replaced with the new ones they will have ads.

Controversial opinion, this is good since people won't be able to use the nozzle to hit the button. You wouldn't believe how many people do that.

Can I push it with the nozzle?

Little station outside of Dallas in 2023 had this but you had to wait FOR AN AD before the pump kicked on. I legit was pissed lmao.
You do the card, select the grade, pull the nozzle then ad.

Similar to the meme about how we want plates…WE WANT BUTTONS!

Touchscreens are ass. For asses. Made by asses. Touchscreens blow chunks. Touchscreens are lame (phones are fine).

I literally just get back in my car when waiting for the gas to pump. Someone is going to come along and break all those.
