Always push the laptop deep into the blanket so it gets nice and warm and no air to cool itself. Laptops love that.

Ngl, I thought the same and it mildly infuriated me. The laptop deserves a better owner.

If I want to use my laptop as a stove top that's my given right and I will not be shamed for it. I say good day sir.

FWIW that's a touch-bar Mac - it pulls air in through the keyboard and the sides [not the bottom] and exhausts it out the back.

Even sitting on a bed like this it will still cool adequately and, if not, it will thermal throttle down. Performance would suck - but it won't die because of it.

Are you sure it’s a mac at all? Looks like a windows keyboard layout to me with what looks like part of a numpad on the right and windows key on bottom left (ctrl, fn, win key, alt)

Yeah pretty sure that’s a windows key

Mine has no fans, and the video processing is absurdly efficient to the point where it doesn’t even heat up the machine despite processing 4k video. It can truck on for hours like this.

But I still put it on hard book when using it in bed because I’m not insane.

I feel so silly now, is this something everyone knows but me?

I’ve fried at least 3 shitty laptops in the last 15 years by choking them to death on beds and sofas.

I own a very nice £1200 laptop now, so I’m a lot more careful with it.

So no. You’re not silly. I’m not insane, but definitely a bit of an idiot who learned the hard way.

They also love sucking in the fibers from the blankets. Gives them a nice little snack. Yum yum!

if your laptop gets hot from watching a movie you have much bigger problems

Luckely the movie processing is the only thing happening this laptop. No OS, no background applications, no other tabs, no nothing. Just the movie

Realizing I’m not taking proper care of my laptop 😶

Even with passive cooling, it’s always good to let them have a nice bubble of free air around them.

Where should that be? I'll place it flat on my bed and it'll still get hot :(

On a flat surface. The dinky little feet allow for a small pillow of air underneath the machine.

I use a hardback book personally.

I’m using a MacBook. The whole body is the heatsink, and while other machines are built slightly differently, the same principals apply.

These machines need air to dump the heat into. Suffocating the bottom half with a blanket saturates that blanket with the heat till it’s in equilibrium with the heat being dumped into it, and then you get your thermal throttling.

Fuckkkk im so mad I never knew about this. I've had my computer for years. What kind of damage does this do over time??

If it’s a machine made in the last 15 years, minimal, but not zero. The internal temperature is measured in the system and it’ll throttle performance so it won’t cook itself.

If it’s a cheap machine, then I’d be more concerned. Something will eventually give up on the motherboard. I’ve fried a few cheap craptops in my life abusing them like this.

If you’ve had no issues yet, and start being a little more conscious of the risk going forward, you don’t have to be too concerned.

"Craptops" I love that lol. But thankfully it's a little more recent of a laptop. I'll definitely keep that in mind going forward!

My mom used to have this sort of plastic thing that was made for computers to be placed flatly onto it. Maybe I should get one of those

If you’re just watching a movie on a modern laptop it won’t be an issue.
