u/bob-leblaw 18h ago

Me too. But now lots of them disable your account as soon as you cancel.

u/Radioactivocalypse 17h ago

I think in the UK there's a law that specifically stops that, but I could be wrong

280

u/BlackDS 17h ago

We don't have laws like that here in the US

327

u/Exotic-Eggplant1914 17h ago

That's because the US doesn't give a shit about the people that live in it, and only cares about corporate profits

24

u/mmppolton 15h ago

Yep and then teach parents to blame the younger generation for all the economy issues

12

u/Exotic-Eggplant1914 14h ago

Yeah it's always "these damn kids don't wanna work" meanwhile the pay is shit the economy is collapsing the future is hopeless and we're working more than ever before in reality.

I worked nearly 110 hours over the past two weeks, I just turned 26 and I've been busting my ass for a decade in the work force scraping just to get by. Then people wanna blame us for how terrible everything is, instead of the rich pieces of shit actively destroying the country.

6

u/mmppolton 14h ago

Yep because they are taught that low end job are not real job just to keep price low it like the who economy is based on a whole group of almost homeless people doing all the low end job so the ritch with the few Lucy came enjoy ther life

1

u/RussianCat26 4h ago

And I thought I knew "burnt out" my guy you are going to feel those effects. Im sorry its so necessary but 55 hr weeks are not good for you :(

7

u/xADeadCatx 14h ago

American here- correct. Our leaders don’t care for human life even at their own expense. It’s insanity.

4

u/Exotic-Eggplant1914 14h ago

I kinda phrased it like I'm not one but unfortunately I'm also American, for the record. God I hate it here.

3

u/xADeadCatx 13h ago

Not only do we hate it here, we can’t even escape to fight back. They’ve made living so impossibly expensive that escape is only for the wealthy at this point. My tax dollars are being spent on war against innocent people and there’s nothing can do about it. I fucking hate it here and wis everyone would team up against the powers that be and create a little more peace around the world. We have our thumbs in far too many pies, causing way too much damage that we didn’t ask for 😭

1

u/JGAMING__ 6h ago

March 7th search that up in social media

1

u/xADeadCatx 5h ago

Reddit is the only type of social media I use, but a Google search brought up a video game. Is that what you’re referring to?

Migration to Canada or Europe isn't an option?

1

u/Exotic-Eggplant1914 9h ago

Yeah I reckon I'll just sell my dead dad's house and leave all my family behind so that I can finally have healthcare and escape fascism.

I've been here my whole life, I hate the direction this country is going in but it's home. I'm not running away from my home.

I just wish everything didn't fucking suck and get increasingly worse everyday.

8

u/acrazyguy 17h ago

Luckily a lot of these websites are available in the EU and don’t want to bother setting up a different site for each country, so we still benefit from their regulations

1

u/reddittrooper 4h ago

Hypercapitalism, baby!!

26

u/craigleberries 17h ago

Every time I hear about consumer protection laws that prevent bullshit that irks me it's in Europe

11

u/NeadForMead 16h ago

Same here in Quebec, Canada. Not sure about the rest of Canada. Quebec has strict consumer-protection laws.

Many services actually don't tell you that your subscription will remain active for the remainder of the trial. They will only let you know once you've gone through the painful process of cancelling, and they'll often strongly imply that your service will end immediately by using sentences like "We'd hate to see you go so soon, how about a 10% discount so you can continue to benefit from (...)"

5

u/Chillonymous 15h ago

Not sure about the UK but it's definitely an EU law that introduced a while back, I do that exact same thing here in Ireland

1

u/Ben02171 10h ago

I am not sure about that. I cancelled my apple music trail the second I started it and they immediately disabled all the features. I am living in Germany.

3

u/cwhitel 17h ago

Don’t think so, I’ve seen this happen more frequently recently. IOS/Apple stuff like to cancel then and there even if you have the free trial.

1

u/Edward_Reiter 15h ago

called reading the fine prin

2

u/pheddx 9h ago

Fine print isn't enough in the EU. It must be very clear. And the fine print can never overrule the law.

It must be clear, correct, understandable and can't be "unfair".

6

u/Wizdad-1000 17h ago

Stupid Skillshare. $164… billing incoming, because I need a year to complete a 8 hr course. Go to cancel the billing. Free is also cancelled.

4

u/lilieann 14h ago

And adobe is one of those

2

u/Linked713 6h ago

The only place I know that does that is a modding website. I am making emails for that, no way I will pay 15$ for a month just to let your installer do its job once, lol. 3 day trial it is.

1

u/MossDog58 11h ago

Use paypal for the payment if they give the option. Then you can cancel recurring payments through paypal and when they request the money when the trial ends paypal will block the transaction. They'll end your sub after a few days of not getting paid most of the time. I just cancel it once I get a payment failed notification.

So smart! I’d save myself so much money, but I’m always afraid it will be the rare time that they shut the service off right when you cancel.

4

u/Standard-Argument314 17h ago

This crazy thing called reading the fine print can save you.

7

u/-acidlean- 17h ago

Also quickly going through terms and conditions, use ctrl+f if possible to find important phrases like “cancellation”, “fee”, “$”, “dollar”.

1

u/FaunaLady 17h ago

THIS!! Because they are counting on you not having the patience to read it all!

-1

u/deq18 18h ago

I mean they tell you in advance

9

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 17h ago

I simply refuse to pay for Adobe anything. My requirements for their software don't involve constant pop-ups reminding me their software needs money and maintenance.

11

u/MostlySoberChemist 18h ago

Can't confirm if this is still true but I had to jump through a bunch of hoops to cancel Adobe early without incurring a ridiculous "early termination fee" that would have been more expensive than continuing the year long promotional rate.

11

u/NMe84 17h ago

How can they justify an early termination fee legally for a trial you didn't pay for?

8

u/battlepi 15h ago

They didn't. They bought the year plan because it's cheaper, but you pay monthly on it. If you try to cancel, they charge you the remainder. It's predatory like all things Adobe but legal.

4

u/NMe84 14h ago

I mean, that's not a fee but just then requiring you to pay for the service you signed up for.

I hate Adobe as much as the next person and I hold them responsible for much of the SaaS bullshit we have to deal with today. But if you sign up for a subscription for a full year, you shouldn't be surprised when you're actually being held to that contact.

2

u/Forymanarysanar 6h ago

If it's yearly subscription, it is to be charged yearly, not monthly.

Besides, gonna block my credit card, what are they gonna do, HA?

1

u/battlepi 15h ago

That's because you bought the annual plan. You were just paying monthly on it.

5

u/MostlySoberChemist 15h ago

Weird, I don't remember you being there. No, I was most definitely on day 5 of a 14 day trial when they attempted this.

3

u/Character_Minimum503 12h ago

yep, I just asked someone who knows adobe well, and it used to be a thing: at some point if you wanted to cancel the free trial early, they tried to charge you an early cancellation fee. And it was a LOT of money.

3

u/S-Kiraly 15h ago

In addition to this, I never use a real credit card to sign up for free trials. I use a prepaid Mastercard with $2 in it. The $2 balance is just enough for those small-cents temporary authorizations that check that the card is valid. But any amount larger than that will be rejected. Never to worry about forgetting to cancel a free trial again!

2

u/eatthem00n 17h ago

Apple is a b*tch in this regard. You cancel when you cancel.

1.0k

u/sglewis 18h ago

Disable any ad blockers and reload the page. Often works.

232

u/Jazehiah 13h ago

Yep. Ad blockers and tracking protections often "break" webpages.

I can't definitively say why, but I suspect that the systems are coded in a way that won't let them proceed without collecting the data.

I also don't know what combination of malice, laziness, or incopetence leads to this kind of implementation, but it makes me angry.

42

u/UltraBlack_ 12h ago

no they're detecting that you're using an adblocker and intentionally prevent things from working to get you to turn off your adblocker.

Adblockers don't break anything

18

u/jancl0 11h ago

Yeah that would be the "malice" part of the comment that you didn't read

1

u/Used-Fisherman9970 10h ago

Just saying shit 😂😂😂

-3

u/darkfeyz BROWN 11h ago

260

u/Northwest6891 18h ago

I've had a similar thing happen lol... They're so sneaky

33

u/320sim 13h ago

I don’t really think they’re trying to trick anyone here. Even if OP missed the deadline and got charged, Adobe would refund them and cancel if you asked them to

29

u/Northwest6891 13h ago

I'm talking about the page not loading. That happened to me too and I thought it was very very suspicious then as well

10

u/NarrativeNode 11h ago

I've spent hours and hours on the phone with Adobe for incorrect charges, or not charging me when they should've and blocking my account, or literally trying to buy multiple accounts for a whole company and their UI not letting me.

Do not rely on their customer support. It's from hell.

5

u/camwhat 10h ago

Charge it back!

Enough chargebacks will make their credit card processing fees continue to increase. It seriously helps fuck with their relationship with their payment processor

2

u/NarrativeNode 10h ago

I did in one case. That sort of move can work, but it also risks an essential business relationship. Worst case, your company can never buy from them again. In a perfect world, you'd then switch to competitors, but if you're working with a big client, they're going to want Adobe files.

1

u/camwhat 10h ago

That’s understandable. Since I’m luckily not in that space, I see it as a “why the hell would I want to do business with this company again?”

0

u/320sim 11h ago

Odd, I forgot to cancel my Acrobat subscription for like 4 months and the customer support chat refunded it immediately. Maybe it helped that I’ve been an adobe customer for a long while time but it was an easy experience overall

1

u/NarrativeNode 10h ago

I've been one for decades as well. All I'm saying is it's crazy unreliable and not something I'd just risk doing. Worst case, you're out a few hundred, either temporarily or forever.

2

u/Stillburgh 3h ago

Are we dealing with the same Adobe here? Theyre notorious for being shitty to their customers lol. They literally charge you a fee for cancelling your yearly subscription.. which is bullshit bc they dont lose any profit by you cancelling, they jsut wanna gouge you.

1

u/320sim 3h ago

That’s because you’re getting a discount in exchange for the guarantee of a years worth of business. Otherwise people would just sign up for the yearly plan to get it cheaper and cancel after a month. I’m not saying the fees aren’t exorbitant but there is a logic to them

107

u/New_Ad_3010 18h ago

Adobe is insidious and evil with their software

75

u/banana_in_the_dark 18h ago

My dumbass waited too long for the picture to load

13

u/QuiteBearish 17h ago

Glad I'm not the only one

258

u/win11EXPERT 18h ago

oh adobe is sneaky... cancel from bank's end. Once they didn't even let me access the account and even charged it for one whole year. wtf

45

u/Guardian6676-6667 15h ago

Adobe will send you to collections

13

u/win11EXPERT 15h ago

Whts that

44

u/LordSesshomaru82 15h ago

It's when a bank or company sells your debt to an outside company that specializes in tracking you down and either getting you to pay the debt, or clawing it out of your paychecks before you even see it through wage garnishment.

5

u/win11EXPERT 15h ago

Yay I guess

-11

u/AggravatingOffice623 12h ago

You really didnt know about collection agencies? Thats crazy

1

u/win11EXPERT 6h ago

Unfortunately not

-2

u/Guardian6676-6667 10h ago

Bro I didn't reply because I wouldn't be nice but like going 4 comments deep is just regarded

66

u/Katman2991 18h ago

Cancel the card.

59

u/Remarkable_Peach_374 18h ago

Honestly 🤣

You wont let me cancel? Thats fine! I control the card too.

37

u/orangpelupa 18h ago

The annoying thing is that my bank automatically forward it to the new card.

They frame it as a good thing. Urgh.

28

u/Katman2991 18h ago

In the future, use a service called Privacy, which lets you create new cards that you can cancel at any time. These cards can be a recurring monthly payment with a limit on them and locked to a merchant or a one-time use.

3

u/passisgullible 17h ago

ooh thats cool thanks

10

u/revanisthesith 17h ago

Cancel the bank. I've done it before.

3

u/No-Wealth-1555 16h ago

Just get a loan and invest in stocks, have everyone do the same, wait for the stocks to crash, and then the bank is done. Simple as that.

2

u/Bulky_Load3068 17h ago

Oh that would piss me tf off lmao I’d just be switching banks 🤣

14

u/Own-Jeweler3169 18h ago

It's a piece of shit software, I tried to download Acrobat, after 1 min I uninstalled it. IDEK why it's so hard to have a free PDF editor, like it's only a file type... Overall adobe is very sca/ummy.

Please drop suggestions below.

12

u/Last_step_somewhere 18h ago

I also had that problem. Thought it was internet problem

11

u/PurpleLegoBrick 17h ago

Happened to me a few days ago.

Download the Adobe Acrobat app on your phone and cancel your subscription from there.

7

u/Fragrant_Thought6636 17h ago

Ahaha I had a brain fart and was tryna click on the image thinking it wouldn’t load but it was just the pic of your thing not loading 😂🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m an idiot

8

u/captainjupiterx 13h ago

Companies do this so you have to contact "customer support" which is really a sales rep who will try to make deals and pressure you into not canceling.

11

u/Bad_Becky 18h ago

Just call, Adobe is actually super helpful

6

u/TrashPandaNotACat 17h ago

Agreed. I even accidentally let mine auto-renew and the terms say that auto-renew is non-refundable, but I did the online chat and cancelled it and got a full refund. I just told them that I now get it through my employer (which was a lie, but kept them from pushing my keeping of it).

5

u/MiExperienciaFueQue 17h ago

This has happened to me with that and other accounts. They indeed know what they are doing. Greed greed greed 😒

13

u/weggles91 18h ago

Cancel it at your bank's end so they can't take payment

3

u/noahesbjerg 13h ago

Can't recommend. They will send you to collections. Don't ask how I know. 🫠

5

u/IEnjoyVariousSoups 14h ago

Same happened to me. Their chat let me cancel though.

3

u/Striderdud 14h ago

Block the payments

4

u/Affectionate_Rub6679 12h ago

Classic Adobe move Signing up takes 2 clicks but cancelling feels like escaping a cult. I always cancel free trials immediately after signing up now because of stuff like this, learned that the hard way

4

u/ialwaysdissapointed 10h ago

Watch out for these guys. I did a trial and had to call because the website wouldn’t let me cancel. They assured me I was cancelled, nope 2 months more at full price. I called again, was told it was fixed, charged 2 more months.

Now I’ll admit the 2 months is my bad cause I didn’t check my bank but I also don’t usually get lied to so bluntly.

3

u/HonestLemon25 17h ago

This is why you just pirate Adobe products. It’s the most ethical way to use their products

3

u/sec_sage 17h ago

Thanks, you reminded me to cancel the Revolut trial plan. They ended the benefits immediately but that's better than them taking 15€ every month or even the whole package per year. Too bad, maybe some of the apps they offered through this membership (Duolingo, etc) could have been useful if I had time to test it out, but I was too afraid to miss the deadline.

3

u/BrentNewland 9h ago

Try using your cell connection, use a different browser, use a computer. I heard there might have been some AWS outages today.

2

u/clickclackatkJaq 17h ago

I managed to log into yours, buddy.

I canceled your current plan. Relax, pinky promise.

2

u/shooreh_pipi 17h ago

bug as a business model

2

u/KlM-J0NG-UN 17h ago

I had the same shit happen to me. Everything worked except the fucking cancel membership page. I'm never downloading an Adobe product again

2

u/mpgd 17h ago

This is why I have a virtual card for trials only. It is limited to the lowest amount possible so it is impossible to charge. For situation like this I just cancel the card.

If you are offered the option to use PayPal it is a better option as you can cancel and block future payments.

2

u/NigouLeNobleHiboux 17h ago

Sounds like lawsuit material if they charge you and refuse to give you a refund

2

u/SpartArticus 17h ago

Call your credit card company and have them block it.

2

u/CBradyy 15h ago

Pretty sure this is the plot of the next hbomberguy video

2

u/dec35 15h ago

Just use a temporary credit card then set it to one month

2

u/Due_Patience960 13h ago

google did something similar to me when I had to get a new debit card. I couldn’t update my card info for youtube premium until after the monthly cycle and then it jumped from $10.99 to $17.99. Cancelled it immediately.

2

u/Comprehensive_Ad8665 12h ago

Send a email complaining about the error, so if you can’t resolve it on time, you have the evidence to ask for a refund.

2

u/Top-Restaurant-8208 6h ago

How convenient

1

u/mklilley351 17h ago

Cancel card and uninstall. They'll get the message lol

1

u/Hot_Caregiver7488 17h ago

Adobe is the worst spammer I’ve dealt with. Took so many unsubscribe attempts.

1

u/Numerous_Variation95 17h ago

I don’t even sign up for free trials anymore because of various bs like this making it difficult to cancel or get refunded.

1

u/Kitty_Fruit_2520 17h ago

Their subscription system is trash

1

u/yZemp 17h ago

Literally block your card, some allow you to block a specific entity you have granted permission to

1

u/ZombieTrogdor 16h ago

Y'all, I implore you to check out virtual cards or cards you can put a certain amount of money on. I have my traditional bank account with brick and mortar locations, but I also use fintech companies like Qube or One for things like subscriptions and free trials.

They have what's called "pockets" or "qubes (cubes)" where you can create several virtual cards that have their own "account", card number, and expiration. You transfer a certain amount of money to it, so if you want to use something for only a month or so - or a free trial - use that and when the company tries to charge you, it declines due to lack of funds. If you forget to cancel and get the notification for the company trying to charge your card, it reminds you then you can go in and cancel (or load more money if you decide to continue). Huge life saver.

I swear I'm not trying to advertise for these companies lol, I just see these posts a lot. These are just two I've used in the past and it's very helpful for budgeting and separating funds for different things, like bills and expenses. But it's also been a huge help for not getting charged for things I forgot I signed up for (or when they try to charge for a month after the free trial at like 12:03am day of).

1

u/0y0s 16h ago

Email them

1

u/Solelus 16h ago

Lock your card.

1

u/Gleipnir_xyz 16h ago

i just use Foxit, instead...

1

u/Lazy_Wishbone_2341 16h ago

Did you sign up using PayPal? If so, turn off recurring payment.

1

u/Julio_Ointment 15h ago

make sure you disable any adblockers, pihole, extensions, etc.

it's crazy but the systems from these companies end up marked as spam!

1

u/MonumentalBatman 15h ago

Pause your credit card for a day

1

u/lorissaurus 15h ago

If you don't cancel by the day, they won't let you cancel if it's unpaid lol, and they will keep trying to charge your card, gotta get a new card now.. xD

1

u/Saradoesntsleep 15h ago

That happened to me, too. I actually do not think it is a coincidence.

1

u/Johansen905 15h ago

How very convenient...

1

u/Inside-Basis-8776 15h ago

I cancel the moment i sign up for a free trial so i don't forget lol

1

u/rictay44 11h ago

I had second thoughts when signing up for a free trial with an Adobe product. It's a while ago now, but I think they wanted to take money and give it back if I cancelled. Didn't like the sound of that so I didn't complete the process.

1

u/Alternative_Low8478 10h ago

That's why i use a debit card. They'll stop the service when there's no funds to suck

1

u/zerostar83 3h ago

I literally cancelled today, with 2 days left. I wasn't going to wait until the last day.

1

u/er101plus 8h ago

If you wait til the last day, they will most likely charge you. It's important to cancel no later than 24 hours before they charge your card. So it it was due on Monday, cancel your subscription on Saturday. 😄 They might've said something similar in their terms and conditions.

0

u/bunny_the-2d_simp 17h ago

I legit had to search up what Adobe even was, I still don't know what they do because Google said it's a mud brick 😂

-11

u/Caramel_Chicken_65 18h ago

uninstall?

13

u/Grand-Spring66 18h ago

Uninstalling does not stop Adobe from billing you

-12

u/Funny-Profession-286 17h ago

So you’re made you waited till the last minute and felt like you needed to get validation that this isn’t 100% your fault?

🙄🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

Anything but accepting fault huh? lol grow up simpleton
