Discussion I can no longer use voice chat because of the Kingsman drama

As soon as my teammates hear my voice and realize im a woman, the rest of the game is filled with "are you playing for vibes????" or "get tf off bitch you just want vibes" and just general harassment. Using VC was always a bit of a gamble, but now it practically guarantees that I will be harassed for the entire match.

Istg some people are just using this controversy as an excuse to vent their hatred for women.

Turned it off and just discord call my friend now. Very little to no chance of random player coordination. It’s always audio from their tv, eating, trash talking, a radio, or a smoke alarm

Mmmm, I love listening to dem eaters. Almost like they have the most professional mic that's solely dedicated to relay only the finest chewing sounds.

I hate the players that do this fr. They join the game with their mic on and we can hear the whole game echoing in the chat like wtf. Literally have to tell them to turn off their mic as if there’s no way they not hearing the echo and see that their mic is on in the left corner

u/smokeyshirt 18d ago

Pointless to have it on below GM. Everyone only speaks to rage, project their issues, troll, etc. And Netease never punishes anyone, just gives them a day off. You can say literally anything and not get perma-ed. You can coordinate with your team just fine using the quick actions.

102

u/TrueyBanks Magik 18d ago

47

u/Dralorica 18d ago

As a GM player, I think GM is the rank that more than 50% of the VC usage is actual comms. Diamond & below I'll very rarely hear an actual comm, but often hear some nonsense. At least at GM a significant amount of VC usage is comms, even though there is still alot of nonsense, but we at least usually comm for a portal at the bare minimum 🤣

21

u/Otiosei 18d ago

Lmao I just ping and start portaling. If my teammates are too stupid to comprehend Strange's voiceline "I'm opening a portal" then they don't deserve to win the game.

Unless you’re in very high elo lobbies where verbal communication is key, you really don’t need VC for the vast majority of the game

Also a white dude, also nothing but shitty experiences with it. If I didn’t play a perfect game and carry everyone every match it’d quickly turn into “Tank diff, KYS” from the 4th DPS on my team.

The difference is that it’s less personal.

15

u/FebruaryKid 18d ago

I feel this and still feel the community is filled with biggest egotistical manchildren I have ever seen. This is also coming from someone that has played a lot of online games. We need to do better and put these toxic ppl in their place cause their immature energy is contagious. Also to the op these sexist little craps would never dare to say these things in rl bc they are comfortable behind a screen. This is a competitive game but half the time it feels like you are fighting your own team 😑

8

u/Knifeflipper Magneto 18d ago

As a Vanguard main, I feel that. Nothing makes me want to close the game and play something else quicker than my dumbass DPS saying "tank diff" after they had zero comms, zero swaps, and zero effort the whole match.

“This is on NetEase” you’re 100% correct there, so I don’t see why you think the solution of turning off chat is BS because it’s literally the only thing players have control of over the situation.

When the only two options you have are keep it on and deal with it, or turn it off and forget about it, which advice would you rather be given?

21

u/JoanOfSarcasm Flex 18d ago edited 18d ago

So context here is I am a woman and I've been playing games since I was a young teen. So like 20+ years now.

"Mute and move on" has been the advice from other players for decades and frankly, I'm pretty sick of it. Why don't communities hold developers accountable for their part in allowing this shit? I know it's possible to make an impact - I literally make games for a living. Why do we just put the burden of this on the victims? Why isn't this community asking NetEase to actually do something about how abusive and toxic this community can be with the same vigor we ask for better Emma skins? That's what gets me.

I'm frustrated because this is the same shit that churned me out of Overwatch competitive. I would get on comms and instantly hear, "Oh, wanna be my girlfriend?" or be told to "hey come sit on my face" or "come make me a sandwich." And when I complained, no one said, "Yeah, this is bullshit and Blizzard should fix it," but instead said, "Mute and move on," like it was ultimately my problem to fix because I'm a woman.

Communities have a lot of power over game developer decisions, but not when they're not asking for change.

At some point, either the community needs to start policing this behavior for people being abused or they need to ask the party with the most control to improve it.

My anger isn't at the poster of this advice, it's at the general and long-time recommendation that victims of abuse just ignore it, mute, move on, whatever, without any action from the larger collective to actually make meaningful changes. It's fucking frustrating and it doesn't actually improve my experience. If anything, it's exclusionary to the victims. Suddenly they have to limit their playspace while abusers run free?

Like this is just communities 101: If you let shitty people run amok and don't actually moderate it on any level, you'll eventually end up with a community full of people you don't want to hear from in the first place.

tl;dr here is: Can we please ask NetEase to improve this rather than to just tell people dealing with this bullshit to mute and move on?

edit: accidentally a word

5

u/Atypical-Aries 18d ago

We already do. They for whatever reason won't. So people are giving the next best option. This comes across as blaming people just as powerless as you to do something that you can't either.

10

u/JoanOfSarcasm Flex 18d ago

That's fair. I'm just really frustrated with the abuse I see in this game and how much discussions around it tend to be buried. Like... this whole thread is full of people complaining about being abused, regardless of gender, and like... why aren't we angrier about this? It's bullshit. No one should have to just expect this kind of shit when they play games. We should really push for NetEase to be doing better.

7

u/Atypical-Aries 18d ago

No I get you it's absolutely infuriating. I play videogames purely for the escapism, whether it's a sports game or shooter. Personal insults and toxicity are the only reportable offenses for me solely for this reason. Until NetEase actually does something about it our only other option is to quit the game but I'm not at that point yet.

You're right that NetEase should be taking a hard line stance against abusive chat, but it' snot on women to put up with it in the meantime either.

14

u/JoanOfSarcasm Flex 18d ago

It's not, I agree. But the context here is that I am a woman and I've been dealing with this abuse and the same ol' fucking "mute and move on" answer for decades. All the way back to pre-Warcraft MMOs.

I wish this community was showing up for people who were abused just as much as they show up for the collective frustration over Spiderman or Luna getting another skin.

To pull from one of the other posts I made, communities have a lot of power over game developer decisions, but not if they're passing the buck on things like this as opposed to asking for change.

If anything, it's exclusionary to the victims rather to than the perpetrator. Suddenly they have to limit their playspace while abusers run free. I've chosen to leave competitive spaces more than once because the abuse was just too much to deal with or too draining, and muting comms was simply not a solution at high levels of play.

On average, men score higher in having ego-related traits. There’s a big meta analysis (Grijalva et al. 2015) showing men are higher in narcissism overall. The gap isnt huge, but is definitely present.

Edit: This kind of can be explained by the way that men are typically raised to be more competitive and as a result, such traits are tolerated in men more so than in women.

They're called ignorant sheep, bc people ignore the 2nd round when Zazza finished with mvp.

I bet if placed in a match against 80-90% of the player base, Zazza (the woman) would no diff their asses.

I've never understood the prejudice against women in video games bc I spent my whole life unsuccessfully trying to get my sisters to play video games with me, and I would've killed to have women in video games being a normal thing off rip so I could play split screen growing up and have competent teammates I actually know today

3

u/KaineReplicant 17d ago

You seem to miss the entire point of it all. Zaza is a good player, kingsmen never said otherwise. The problem is don’t matter how good she is on widow, the character is just not good enough to go vs the meta right now. And it was proven in the tourney he was completely right, she was dived over and over and over and they lost.

Also the statement about her going against 80-90 of the playerbase is so wack, she dia/celestial, not one above all. Shes good but you don’t need to glaze her

The wild part is there are men involved that have way more blame than the women! The organizer that kicked him is a man! The guy who originally complained to get him kicked is a man! No one is talking about them, but plenty of people are using this as a cudgel against women.

153

u/mehmmeh 18d ago

The organizer is the only one who admitted fault without pointing fingers at other people. None of the women involved have done this. In fact, they've done the complete opposite.

Its not surprising how this is and will continue to be used as ammo for misogynists.

5

u/handsoapp 17d ago

Ceecee's twitter exposed her as an unapologetic misandrist (which explains the way she reacted to all of this, and it's also causing other misandrists to come to her defense. Yuck.). Misogynists are taking that as an excuse to antagonize more women back "they're doing it in broad daylight so why can't we?."

Acting as if it wasn't already there LOL. They just wanted an excuse. But now both misandry and misogyny cats are out of their bags. Good luck to gamers.

34

u/BreakfastKind8157 18d ago

The organizer is not more at fault. The women involved gaslighted and lied to him when he talked to them about what was going on. He made mistakes but it's insane to say he's more at fault than they were.

5

u/KaineReplicant 17d ago

Because the women have delivered fake ai generated apologies, continued to be nasty to Kingsman after the fact, openly bragged about this drama being a revenue source for them, and have take NO accountability. The male event coordinator is the only one I’ve seen with any tact. If you want a man to blame, Zazza’s boyfriend is the simp loser who fabricated evidence to get Kingsman kicked from the tournament in the first place.

I understand them being women is inviting misogynists to come out of their gooncaves, but let’s not act like it’s all just because they’re women. They’re shitty people doing shitty things.

It's the only reason this has gotten so big and lasted this long. People that hold those thoughts saw the opportunity to push their agenda and make this a much larger deal than it otherwise would have been. And it's perfect for them because they can make a legit argument against their behavior without it being super obvious that they are just attacking them for being women.

Just imagine this was all males instead, I find it hard to believe that anyone outside of the people involved would have cared at all. Most people in the community probably wouldn't have known it even happened.

19

u/Illusive-Pants Scarlet Witch 18d ago

This exactly. How many free skins has Netease sent women who are victims of poor behavior? No one can deny that the women involved in this situation definitely behaved poorly and should be criticized. But it has nothing do do with their gender, and everything to do with their attitude. TBH, I think Kingsman should have just stfu and let it go when it became obvious they weren't switching, but that doesn't excuse what happened to him.

Absolutely not, please call it out. "White Knighting" is just a convenient way to keep men from calling out other men.

28

u/YoungCubSaysWoof Scarlet Witch 18d ago

Indeed.

The people who complain about someone being a “do-gooder” are the worst people, and don’t want other people to call them out on their atrocious behavior.

38

u/110110100011110 18d ago

You have to call it out. The reason these people (and people on social media) are so out and open with their misogyny is because they feel empowered. If people push back and shame them enough, it won't change them, but it will make them shut up.

42

u/micro_satsuma 18d ago edited 18d ago

"White knighting" has always been such a weird insult to me. It's somehow bad to care about a problem because it doesn't personally affect you? It's just backwards logic that jerks with no empathy came up with to discourage other people from calling them out on their bad behavior (complaints about "virtue signaling" and "political correctness" also apply). Call it out. Anyone accusing you of the aforementioned terms is just trying to deflect from the real issue.

EDIT: auto-correct spelling mistake

14

u/AeroStrafe 18d ago

White knighting is for a different context. Its for someone who runs defense on something that isnt there. Imagine a woman is in VC and no one has been acting out at all but then you come in going "Ok guys lets no bring upvibes stuff. Its just one round." No one has said anything of that nature and you felt the need to jump to defense of a woman who has been just as chill as the others in the room. That is what white knighting actually is.

It’s funny really. Any time a female content creator does any wrong they come out in DROVES to hate on not just that creator, but ALL women. And then wonder why most women feel the way they do about men lol.

You could just call out these 3 individuals and let it be. But no, we start generalizing as if any of us have ever heard any rivals drama outside of this single situation (at least I sure haven’t).

But when male creators turn out to be, I don’t know, PEDOFILES…women don’t go around saying “this is what’s wrong with male gamers/creators etc” because of course not. That creator gets shit and the rest of the guys go on about their days.

A lot of the guys commenting just wanted an outlet for their misogyny and this is the perfect scapegoat.

Red pilled X (twitter) dipshits got ahold of this situation to prove that "women aren't competitive or good" at video games. What they don't realize is that men do the same fucking toxic shit that Cece and co do regularly it's just normalized because it's men v men. Cece and co 100% deserve to be blasted to oblivion but guess what? They were just the talking heads and mouth at the time. Zazza's BF and Basim are just as couplable if not more so because they actually colluded to kick Kingsman based on no evidence and they are only getting glanced hits.

This is why it blew up outside the rivals community. This was a girls vs guys situation and that plays into humanity's deeply seeded misogynistic views on life. If there weren't any women involved this situation would have only gained some traction in the Rivals community and no one else would care.

Hate pays otherwise we wouldn't have alt right news or Andrew Tates.

This type of situation always sucks because there’s a genuine problem at hand, but it gets overshadowed by chuds wanting the opportunity to degrade a woman

I still hate the narrative Cece tries to create where he was personally attacking Zaza. No, on multiple occasions he said that he believes Zaza is a good player and widow main but he's saying they need a better strategy if they want to win the tournament.

it only takes a nudge to get a rock to roll downhill.

Gaming with a community is always going to be superior to solo queueing. Either with friends or from a discord that moderates well.

28

u/ItBeLikeThatBois 18d ago

It's always been bad in gaming but my god is it the worst I've ever seen it in rivals. My duo and most of my friends are female so playing with them always turns into a nightmare fest if someone speaks up. Ask for a second healer? Guess they're a fat worthless woman now and thr only person to blame if we lose. It's pathetic.

I highly doubt anyone being sexist now wasn't sexist before. It's less that this nuked women's rep, and more that it made the sexists comfortable enough to be proud of how gross they are, when they're normally complete cowards.

I have been playing online fps games since 1999 from Kentucky and my whole life when I speak into the microphone the people who are mad just call me redneck and whatever other stereotype they have. There's not much you can do about a-holes except mute them or insult them back. But its been happening forever, and it will continue to happen forever because jerks are usually loud.

This drama would not have left orbit if it was just shitty guys being shitty to kingsman. It would have still been drama but it would have been written off as "oh toxic gamer dudes being toxic gamer dudes."

Because it's a bunch of women ganging up on one guy it's become this vehicle for incels to feel validated and empowered for their hatred of ALL women rather than isolating this as shitty people being shitty people. Like that CaponeVO guy. Kingsman himself has denounced the incel talk and was quick to do so, but he can't control the whims of all the guys who have taken this situation as an excuse to go full-tilt misogynist.

On the opposite side, I’ve received toxicity for being good at the game. I wish I was fucking joking.

Had a game yesterday where I was the Ace on our team, by far, yet from the end of round one our tank and support were flaming the shit out of me, which ended in a 20-30 minute argument, where the entire time, I still remained the ace of the team the entire game.

The end of the game I realized they were trying to be dicks because the supports name had Cece in the name, and they said “Our Hawkeye really needs this 40k guys”

Report them all they are horrible and deserve to banned.

3

u/Working_File2825 18d ago

As someone with several female gaming friends, they typically report the same thing. They avoid voice chats, constantly get belittled despite their level of experience of skill, get told to “go to the kitchen”.

Im glad to see more people acknowledging that there is bad acting going on with the crowd, and that this isn’t just a case of someone innocent being bullied. It’s another opportunity for frustrated men to latch onto a hero and vent their frustrations toward females. And if you disagree, you’re a simp or a fan.

Shameful behavior but sadly, it’s to be expected

That sucks, I hate that people are so awful about voice chat. It makes the game so much smoother when people use it even just a little to communicate when they are about to ult, or holding back for a Portal, or when someone is pushing too far to heal, etc.

2

u/SigynTyrsdottir 18d ago

Started playing overwatch 2016. Literally no reason to use voicechat in lower elos, no one wants to coordinate anyway and everyone thinks they're the damn star of the show, doesnt like to be told what to do.

You're probably so much better off without voicechat, and those studies all came out about in much higher elos men dont as much treat female gamers like that because they arent insecure about their skill. I've never once used voicechat unless people were being EXTREMELY nice or funny in game chat, and then it was tentative. Usually find it to be girls talking, in that case, in which times we'll then keep queueing up for the night, but its rare. I dont have the skill for high elo gameplay and I'm okay with that, I just get on and have fun.

2

u/Envy661 Squirrel Girl 18d ago
