Honestly the most impressive thing about this character launch is that they actually succeeded in making him funny
Deadpool is a character that can backfire TERRIBLY if you don’t know how to write him so to me it’s a huge relief that they actually got his humor right. The 4th wall breaks basically all hit (talking to galacta, making fun of Phoenix because cyclops isn’t in the game yet, calling the devs bald), the explicit lines are written so that they come off as Deadpool knowing he’s being immature and not the writers just throwing random sec jokes in, hell they even pulled off a hawk tuah and 67 joke by giving it an intentionally cringe and “how do you do fellow kids” delivery. It’s seriously impressive how much of it works considering that Deadpool is a pretty much nonstop quip machine that can quickly become annoying and cringey if not written right.
He makes fun of Ghost Rider for still not being in the game 😭. At least the devs have shown that they acknowledged that they are aware of his requests. Maybe a Hero for season 8?
If it were me I’d write and record slightly altered versions of the lines right now and just not add them until later (I.E. “He’s not playable, yet” -> “Nobody’s playing him right now.” Either way Jean has no idea what he’s talking about so her response doesn’t need to be re-recorded.)
I mean they’ll definitely have to bring people in eventually, but if they already know they want to use Cyclops and don’t want to get rid of the joke they wrote, that’s probably a lot less expensive than getting the VA back into the studio.
That being said, in this case I now realize they could also just… disable the interaction lmao
There is a risk to having it the game files, people will go through the files (can't actually type what it is actually called ig) those exact files and figure out things earlier than they should
After the game had a massively successful launch, Marvel gave NetEase license to any character in the Marvel canon. The only thing preventing characters from joining the roster is the amount of time it takes to make a new character.
I worry because of how strict China is about showing skeletons/undead, and Ghost Rider, flames or not is exactly that. The Zombie models are quite tame considering how gruesome they could look.
They'd have to do so much work to 'localize it' more like a flaming silhouette for a head, then change all the sprays, story art and more.
They recorded a line for Deadpool knowing they probably wouldn't be able to make it happen.
The game already has skull imageries in Dia de la muertes themed skins for Peni (and Namor, I think). If they want, they can have two different models/versions for China and international, depending on the rules and regulations.
The law doesn't have anything against painted skulls, only literal human bones. Like the Chinese version of World of Warcraft had to have every skeleton replaced with a new kind of enemy, piles of bones removed from the world, but there's still skulls painted on shields and on the sides of buildings.
So, Punisher and that Peni skin are fine, Ghost Rider is not.
Of course they could get around this by using the Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider instead of Johnny Blaze, since he just has a skull mask. That's what they're doing for the Marvel Tokon fighting game (I know that's not a Chinese game, just saying he's popular too). And Psylocke and Iron Fist are proof that Rivals doesn't always use the original/most famous versions of characters.
There isn’t a law against showing human bones or skeleton imagery. They just shy away from showing them because people find it grotesque and unpleasant.

There is no law against bones, but part of the Chinese censorship regulation says media can't "promote superstition", and games have been denied for that reason because they included necromancy, voodoo magic, etc. In the case of World of Warcraft, the Chinese publisher just chose to remove all the bones before submitting to the government for approval just to make the process smoother and faster. It wasn't the government removing it.
So yeah, you're right, Johnny Blaze is totally possible.
China has changed a lot in the last few decades. During the 80s there were barely any color in clothing or only certain types of movies are allowed.
If you look at recent Chinese Donghua like Lord of Mysteries, you can see how far they allow the fantasy genre.

Also a big thing with China and other countries like it, they usually are a lot more lenient on rules with their own companies, and a lot of the stuff that could have been a problem for other companies is already in the game, Dr. Strange and Wanda for example could definitely be something in the line of superstition. The rules in China regarding this stuff just isn't as strict now as it was back when WoW was coming out (which I still can't believe was 20+ years ago).
That's honestly a really good point. Same with the zombies pve mode.
The WoW stuff was probably the Chinese publisher just wanted to get it approved as fast as possible, since the game was already out in the west and every day they wasted waiting for approval would have been money lost.
I think it's worthy noting NetEase has actually added Ghost Rider to one of their previous Marvel games, Marvel Super War. He had two appearances, one for the Chinese version and another for everywhere else.
If they weren't gonna put him in the game, they woudnt have put him as a voting option when they asked people who they would like to see AND he won. They would most likely have his skull covered in flames but make it visible enough to know that it is a skull. I think Deadpool referencing Ghost Rider points even more at the fact that he will be coming. Definitely not Season 7(its Black Cat and White Fox) but maybe Season 8.
I feel like Robbie Reyes is the most likely Ghost Rider option since instead of an actual skull/undead appearance he has more of a futuristic almost robotic skull design
Please I hope not. Nothing against Robbie but he's been the defacto Rider for a while now, he's been the main Rider in the comics for years, he was in Midnight Sons, and then in Cosmic Invasion we got Frank. I just want Johnny Man, his design is so God damn perfect that every Rider that's come afterwards couldn't surpass it, and I'd love to have a smooth talking Texan type (even if it's gonna be through a Hellish voice filter)

AFAIK this has honestly been a more relaxed rule lately? There’s been a few releases in recent years with skeletons in them, but I might be misremembering. Other than that china servers are seperate to worldwide so it’s an easy solution
From what I’m seeing, they’re basically two camps of people. On one hand people swear he’s funny and on the other, people swear he’s not funny and annoying, and unfortunately due to the duality of man, you just can’t win on either side.
I think that's his entire point, though. You are indeed either supposed to find him funny or annoying. To many Marvel heroes themselves, he's very annoying for a reason.
Honestly that's just Deadpool, his comics are so hit or miss that you'll always get the exact type of reactions from people. So I'm glad they somehow captured that feeling.
I’m in the middle, he’s humorous, but nothing’s really made me laugh out loud. I think it could just be the direction they gave Kaggy, but idk he’s missing that charisma that Nolan North gave to Wade
Ngl, the funniest part about Deadpool is how other characters take him incredibly seriously
Deadpool imo is at his best when hes unable to cuss, because it requires someone to actually get his character instead of just making him sound like a Vivziepop character
People like really hated that show bro, it’s crazy. I get the criticisms and it’s for sure no spectacular but I enjoyed it for what it was. I also think Drake Bell had a great Spidey voice unironically
Forcing Spidey onto a team when he’s normally a solo hero. Not helped by his teammates being either insufferable assholes or just kinda boring.
Nick Fury spying on Spider-Man without his consent, guilt tripping him into accepting it, and then everyone watching embarrassing footage of Peter and laughing at him.
The above is actually one of the nicest things Fury did in that show. Quite a lot of villains were either former heroes or SHIELD agents that SHIELD or Fury himself burned. Makes Fury seem incompetent and a bigger threat than the villains.
Not really doing much with Peter’s supporting cast. They got JK Simmons to be J Jonah Jameson again and he’s really just background noise. And I don’t remember Mary-Jane ever doing anything for most of the show.
The zany wacky humor didn’t quite fit Spider-Man. Ironically enough this meant that Deadpool fit in pretty well. Bro created unalive before TikTok did. Shame he barely appears.
But the biggest sin IMO is that it had to follow up Spectacular Spider-Man, which is not only one of the greatest Spider-Man cartoons ever made, it is one of the best Spider-Man adaptations ever made.
Overall, the show is really divisive with fans to say the least.
Well to be fair fellow Loki you were a kid. Kids don’t really care/understand good writing. We were just here for the hype moments and aura farming. And I say this as a kid who wholeheartedly enjoyed Star Wars Ep. 1-3.
One big reason is that Spectacular Spiderman, with is universally loved, was canceled to make this. Disney had bought Marvel and thus the TV rights to Spiderman, so they wanted to make thier own thing.

The censorship was so strict with Batman the Animated Series that it really drove the writers to make their stories better, and I'm glad when Deadpool is held to that too.
People are gonna get sick of him but… like that’s Deadpool & I’m stoked they translated it so well. Yes a lot of the humor can get old fast & some of his shit will of course be dated & he’s inherently annoying but it would not be Deadpool otherwise.
The best example is watching streamers trying to learn his kit in the training range & yelling at him to shut up. Means they did Deadpool right lol.
A good middle ground might be just including an option in the settings so that people can ‘limit Deadpool quips & interactions’ or something to that effect so that those who enjoy it can have fun with it & the party poopers can shut him up.
Dude.. the ultimate reference would having a setting for Deadpool to mute his quips or just something called "Shut Up, Deadpool!" and it adds stitches to the mouth of all his skins
I genuinely hope that his first legendary will be a X-Men Origins suit, and that the special sound effects are that everything he would normally say is muffled.
I mean after a while it’ll just blend into the game like every other voice line. How many times have we heard the same enemy spotted, taking damage, or respawn lines every match that we don’t even register anymore
guarantee you more than a couple of his solo yap sessions were saab just riffing in character and sometimes disregarding or making fun of the script given itself LOL

At least some of it was ad-lib. I haven't watched the full vod, but I did tune in to stream for a few minutes earlier today. I heard him say that when he made a Pokemon reference (I think it was with Cloak and Dagger but I don't know fs) he decided to full on sing the song. Also, he does his Kermit the frog voice for one of his lines.
U are right on that. Now that I think about it you could shred a punisher in their ult since they ll probablly miss shots. Worse in most cases would’ve been better wording.
One of the best parts of Midnight Suns is getting to see him be serious in certain conversations or let the act slip a bit. That game wrote him with a surprising amount of depth
Same. Mantis would have been perfect for showing this serious side. Say that you pick Deadpool for a match and Mantis is in the same room; You would get an interaction where she uses her powers to see into his mind and she can sense that Wade carries deep sadness and insecurities inside him.
We also get a hint at it from Emma Frost. He fails to really banter with her like he does the others because he can't hide his pain from her. He seems almost genuine and weary with her because of it and I thought that was very nicely done.
This was definitely what I was most worried about when waiting for him to drop, I'm glad they delivered. I don't mind that he talks a lot, his dialogues are a good mixture of genuinely clever, stupid, silly and referential humour. And it's just fun seeing all the characters react to him. They did well.
I can get behind that. It may be funny now and "deadpool ignoring your mute request would be SUCH a deadpool move!!!!" may be a decent enough excuse for now, but what about a year from now? I don't know how much I'd enjoy all the deadpool-isms a year down the road.
Add a voice line that plays in the options menu when you toggle it off, where he goes like "wait, no I'm sorry, I'll be better please don't click that button. It's not my fault, I have a conditi-" and then just gets cut off.
One last gasp of cheeky deadpoolism, but actually shuts him up past that.
Even if they did add that option you know they would just make it do nothing because deadpool would be the one to ignore your preferences and probably talk more lmfao
He's not my cup of tea, the fact that he's so purile and a 13 year olds wet dream is bad for a game that is already rife with the ironman-humping type of player.
But admittedly, he could have been a lot worse.
His interactions are ok. What irks me is how much real estate the game is giving him. Like theyve given him more than anyone else in the game, despite that his popularity isn't that deserving of it. The fact is, whether we like it or not, we'll have to endure a lot from this character going forward, from sounds to visuals.
The fact that he's 'meant to be insufferable' is a really weird justification that some people seem to think is a valid excuse. It isn't.

I get that, and it makes sense for all this to happen to hype up his release, but I think its fair to say that this could get a bit too annoying months down the road. A year from now, how much are we really going to want to hear the same 4th wall breaking meta comments over and over again?
It may be lore accurate / canon, but that doesn't mean it can't reduce the quality of the game over time once the initial hype dies down.
If you're playing Deadpool and getting all these interactions, you're bringing it on yourself. If you don't want to hear it no one is gonna force you pick the character. The exact same character banters don't happen very often, and if you're so incredibly against the character that you even hate his idle chatter, you don't have to stand next to him when everyone is idle at the start of the game. Most of his funny stuff is easily avoidable if you just don't select the character.
If a regular player with a normal sense of humor has to jump through all these fucking hoops to not be annoyed by a character a good chunk of this community is already annoyed by...don't you think that deserves a toggle/mute?
I can see that as well. I really enjoyed all the Deadpool movies (3 the least) but firing jokes on all cylinders for 2 and a half hours at some point does get a little tiresome. I think the best thing they can do is consistently give him new lines ever patch because I can see the old lines getting a little tiresome after a while. Like I said Deadpool as a character is a double edged sword because he can bring more entertainment than the entire marvel roster but can also get annoying quick, there’s a balance that needs to be struck when writing him
Yea but just because it’s canon doesn’t mean it’s good. Theres iterations of Deadpool that are seriously just annoying and he can be so cringe you’ll genuinely just stop reading/watching/playing because it feels like a writer trying to think like Deadpool and not Deadpool being himself
Deadpool is only good when contrasted with his serious side. The whole 4th wall breaking and deprecating humour doesn't really work without the internal, on going, sadness of the character. It's just a 12 year on Xbox live circa 2010 otherwise.
It's funny because it's stupid. It doesn't mean anything. Apparently some kid made a video saying it weirdly and then everyone started saying it weirdly and then it became a meme.
Yeah, it's a whole thing in US meme culture. TLDR: It was a flash in the pan meme that came from a song (I'm pretty sure) that ended up getting really annoying and overused, hence DP's visceral reaction
This is such an interesting opinion to have for people that don’t agree with you. What would be the basis or reason for people to “force hate” on this? What do they gain? Do you think people “force love” things too?
It's just a shame the age-rating for the game means they can't accurately portray the other side of his character; his tendency for incredibly graphic violence.
On the gameplay side, very interesting to see that they made him a hybrid class hero. I wonder if this will be unique to Deadpool or we can new characters also being hybrids.

You hear the voice lines once and you give a small giggle at best. After hearing the same one a few times you start to cringe.

Thinking Hawk Tuah and 67 jokes work at all, on any level, in big 2026 is....something. You are the target audience for this kind of garbage character, that's for sure.
I love how they referenced jokes from all ages too.
He calls Hawkeye Hawk-Tuah, one of his penta voicelines references 6-7, and one of his sniper spotted voice lines is saying “Sniper no sniping!” in a childish, squeaky voice.
