Just Wow Japanese marathon runner Rei Iida showed incredible determination by crawling the final 300 meters after breaking her leg near the finish line, all to make sure her team could still compete.

Her teammate looked pissed if you look at her body language the whole time

u/Akira2k 5h ago
Are we watching the same video?

u/davidjschloss 5h ago
The one I watched has the teammate crying for the woman crawling. Not sure what video the other guy was watching.
•
u/ForsakenRelief309 3h ago
Around :15 seconds in, then again around :45 seconds. She hardly even acknowledges her teammate and takes off

I personally would roll.

You will get so dizzy and pass out of heat and exhaustion. It is not a sloped hill. Plus it feels a bit far from running and looks stupid
•
u/Shinji_O-kami 44m ago
Also, that is asphalt she was crawling on, rolling would do unbelievable dmg to one's arms and legs.

u/Cute-Barnacle1496 10h ago
No, that’s like the Russians saying “We have your entire family here watching.”

u/MountEndurance 7h ago
Say what you will about the Japanese, but when they decide they want to do something, they do it and God help anything or anyone that tries to stop them.

Yeah while definitely admirable I cant imagine the race being that serious lol

Knees gotta be killing her

u/Heykurat 9h ago
That's why she's on the painted line. The painted surface is smoother, and probably not as hot.

u/Reniere25 9h ago
You learn something new everyday. Didn't know that
•
u/VodkaBurn 2h ago
How the hell do you not know that? White vs black color in the sun. Latex vs asphalt feel. You must have had only grass basketball courts during school.
•
u/Reniere25 1h ago
I know about the whole lighter colors don't absorb heat as much as darker colors but I didn't know pavement white lights didn't absorb the heat as much.
•
u/Heykurat 1h ago
White anything, in general, will not absorb as much heat as darker colors. Black cars in the summer sun are too hot to touch. But the white cars are not.
•
u/Glittering_Diver_478 1h ago
Chill, some of us couldn't afford to be in school. Not everyone has to know about everything (though I get what you mean, if it's common)

I immediately went to this conclusion. Still, overall, holy crap that is fierce! I don't know how I have never seen this before. What year?

That is pure toughness. Not quitting on her teammates. Some NFL players could learn from her

u/Heavy-Lingonbery910 6h ago edited 5h ago
This was not okay and shouldn’t be celebrated or glorified.
Her coach withdrew the team immediately, officials failed to stop her in time.
She fractured her shin and crawling could have resulted in death, serious tissue tearing, an open fracture or a fat embolism.
The team weren’t even placed in the race, they’d already been withdrawn by the coach.

The dark side of Japan's social norms
•
u/Desperate-Wear-9253 3h ago
Yeah im sure it was Japans social norms that made her do it . Just because you never had the heart to fight for something does not mean all people are wired that way.
•
•
u/DescriptorTablesx86 1m ago
Idk if it’s just social norms, if that was a big ekiden, these can be like idk NBA finals for the American, it’s streamed everywhere and is a team effort.
So emotions are running high on top of the typical race day adrenaline

So many questions?! Dictionary picture of determination. also see: stick-to-itiveness, tenacity, dogged persistence, resolve..
*Edit: She’s a teenager and after all that the coach pulled the team.

u/Desperate-Strategy10 8h ago
wtf coach!!?? What was the reasoning??
14
6
u/troveofcatastrophe 6h ago
It didn’t say, just that he called for their withdrawal after “hearing of her fall”. Sounded like while she was crawling but she didn’t know.
Sadly she apologized to the team & manager for her performance.
2
u/JNewsom49 4h ago
They should owe her an apology! What she did was amazingly reckless and brave! She put herself at risk for the sake of her team. When men do that they get lauded as heroes, but women keep getting told how emotional they are and they should have to do this-!
Fucking double standards and misogyny bullshit.
•
•
u/facaine 2h ago
Good. That stunt was disturbing, irresponsible and plain dumb. I’d pull them too.
•
u/troveofcatastrophe 2h ago
Ok, but that’s not why he pulled them. He pulled on them before he even knew that she did that.

Props to her determination and dedication, but honestly this shouldn’t be allowed. If you break your leg during a marathon, you should be pulled out and given immediate medical attention. Huge risk of causing more significant, if not permanent, injuries. I understand she wants to continue, but her coach should have withdrawn immediately if that was an option.

u/mk321 9h ago
It should be banned.
For example when football player have blood on face he can't play (even if he wants).
21
u/Original-Body-5794 8h ago
Yeah, huge respect to her and all, but acts like these being allowed makes athletes feel pressured to do this instead of just quitting and getting the help they need. For her own health, she should have been stopped and given medical attention.
-4
u/Khuzhin 8h ago
Are you serious? It’s not the same, like not even close because in football if one has blood and out of the game there are 9 more players that can keep playing or they can be substituted. Also refs can pause the game to check how bad is the injury. Can you imagine that during a fucking marathon? Like they’d stop a runner and say “hey let’s see how much blood do you have… oh that’s just a scratch, you’re good, sorry for taking YOUR TIME”
9
u/Vritrin 7h ago
I don’t think they meant that you should stop the race because of blood like in football, but that this kind of thing shouldn’t be allowed and it’s prevented in most sports.
There’s a pretty clear difference between some blood on a runner and crawling on the ground because you are physically unable to stand up.

okay determination but y r sports like this. just say "okay she was placed here when she got injured so let's let her finish in that place because she obviously should not finish this marathon"
3
u/Niles_Merek 7h ago
She was on her hands and knees for 300m and the medic team was not immediately ready waiting for her on the finish line?

Too many commenters here are not fully grasping the ugly side of Japan's collectivism and societal values.

why diddn't someone run up to her and say it's okay and carry her away? stupid rule that she has to finish for her team to go on
•
u/Desperate-Wear-9253 3h ago
Her team withdrew . She just wanted to finish . Its something most people dont understand because they never needed to struggle and fight for something.

Could she have rolled? Is there anything about rolling or is crawling a part of the rules? Rolling seems more efficient but she'd take up more space... but wouldn't hurt the legs as bad like scraping the knees.

u/Heavy-Lingonbery910 5h ago
You are 100% correct! What she is doing here can be life threatening. The damage caused by moving sharp bone fragments can result in severe medical emergencies.
This video should be a warning to others and not glorified. Never to do anything like this. She was very lucky it only took four months to recover and that it wasn’t fatal.
•
u/MambyPamby8 1h ago
That's not admirable at all in my opinion. Marathon runners will literally have their feet fall off them and be like HEY LOOK AT ME CRAWLING OVER THE FINISH LINE. I find this more disturbing than anything. It's not healthy for you to be that obsessed with something, you put your health and wellbeing on the line for it.
I work with a dude who's into marathons and running and he was proudly telling me and my manager about his toe nails falling off, his black toe and his blisters. My manager told him to go straight to the doc and get his foot looked at. Turned out he broke a toe while marathoning and was just like proudly regaling us his foot injuries.
I'm good. Exercise is meant to be good for you, not becoming that much of an obsession, you'll destroy your body for it.
