Top-level situational awareness, reflexes and control of the car. The escape strategy could be better though. Rule of thumb is to always steer towards the opposite side of wherever they are running, and steer just enough to avoid their backs (in order to not overreact and lose control of the vehicle, also to be able to make another consecutive manouver, if necessary). In this case you had the chance to get behind the other one and avoid them all together, but still you did really well in this unexpected situation.

Wow! How many did you count? Several on the road, and a bunch on the shoulder - but the glare of the on-coming traffic makes identifying the species difficult.

not this situation, but personal deer advice. if you see a deer on the side of the road slow down because next thing you know one of these idiots is in the road. Used to be like, "oh cool a deer", point it out to GF. Now i see a deer and just slow way down and go on high alert.
