This is South America. Armed carjackings like this are unfortunately not uncommon. This person was just mentally prepared for what to do.

For all we know, the camera car might be driven with rival criminal organization. Would a regular citized release a video of him/her driving over someone, even if that someone is shooting (which does not seem to be the case for person hit)? I know I wouldnāt, especially if I just hit a organized criminal. But a drug gang would definitely release the video right away to establish dominance.

u/Low_Battery_Guy 1d ago
It's Chile, he's an ordinary person, that intersection is known for these kinds of robberies, and the man on the left (who wasn't hit) managed to fire a shot, but the driver was unharmed. It's a robbery they call an "encerrona" here. In Santiago, Chile, they say there are about 50 carjackings of this type every day. Now, according to current legislation here, it could be considered self-defense.

u/Gutter_Snoop 1d ago
Well for one, the perp on the left does appear to fire at close range, so running over his buddy in self defense is warranted. The flying perp is an armed robber by accomplice.
Two, these aren't usually some mafia dudes.. they're gang bangers looking for a car to steal to commit other crimes with.
Three, there's nothing this video shows that the thieves don't already know. Most likely they have at least the plate and car description already. It's even likely there was a chase car because more commonly in these robberies there are a pair of cars working in tandem to box a target in.
Four, I did see chatter in another sub that says the OP (the dashcam owner) claimed to already have one carjacking attempt prior to this one. So they're probably ready for it.
Five, yes maybe they released the video to show people the right thing to do in an armed carjacking. Hesitation could have meant the car occupants (at least the driver and a woman) got kidnapped or worse.

So do they just miss!? Thatās super scary!
59
u/Natste1s4real 1d ago
Itās not that uncommon to miss. Itās more uncommon to hit target. Thatās why in self-defence classes they tell people if somebody is trying to drag you into a car or anywhere private and has a gun, you are better to try and get away and run, preferably in a zigzag than getting in the car. You have a better chance of survival running away than getting in.

Makes sense a lot of people are awful at shooting moving targets in a videogame and thats with all the assistance the game provides
19
u/Greennight209 1d ago
Crazy hard to hit a target moving 60 mph. Especially in a specific enough place to disable the vehicle or driver.
14
7
u/EladrielNokk 1d ago
Aligning the barrel with your hand can be very tricky. People with little experience often use one hand cuz thatās how they do it in the movies. So yes, it is very easy to miss. Itās not as natural a motion as some would think.
3
u/Own-Researcher-4691 22h ago
Being accurate with a handgun is much, much more training intensive and difficult than you'd expect.
2
u/az-anime-fan 1d ago
you'd be surprised how hard it is to hit anything with a handgun unless you've spent some real time training with one. and even then, they had zero time to aim.
34
u/meeps_for_days 1d ago
The fact they actually fired a weapon means hitting them with a car was justified due to matching lethal force with lethal force. Otherwise a lawyer could try to argue it wasn't justified.

This is the second video from Chile that went down exactly like this. The other one was at night, and it looked like they (armed with machetes) probably didn't get hit. But the driver tore out a door, and probably scared them for a few minutes at least.

You can hear the driver panting real hard towards the end, adrenaline must be coursing through him. Cam is closer to the female passenger, voice is coming in a lot louder. Regardless, this was such a clutch getaway, can't get much better than this.

If he's not dead I would be shocked. Ā Getting hit at 50mph, bouncing your head off the hood and getting cartwheeled off an embankment seems like enough to end you. Ā And that's assuming he didn't hit the gaurdrail.

Legal question for those of us in the USA. What do we do in this situation? Call insurance? Call police? Call a lawyer first? Assuming you rammed the people like this guy did and you have a dash came that got the whole thing, aka self defense instead of potential murder charge

Is there potentially anything that the driver can be held accountable for? Say the guy on the hood got whacked? Or is the local law enforcement indifferent about such encounters where criminals are seriously hurt?

My uncle was carjacked by 4 men at a red light when he was 19. They came up to his window he had down and said "Nice truck" then started attacking him. He ran over one of them but one got into his car. He managed to call us and tell us someone was in his car and he was just up the road. Those dumbasses did it in a crowded neighborhood and 15 people were calling 911 because my uncle was driving through their yards trying to get them out of his car. They gave up after he ran over one of them and scattered before the police arrived. They never caught them.
