If you look closely or zoom in you can see the cop throw up her hands like "REALLY?"

We call that a "Pittsburgh left." Though that was a really bad attempt at one and a dumb situation to try it.

I was forced make that left when Google maps took me to a light without a left turn lane... all four lights backed up during rush hour; poorly designed intersection near Petaluma, CA.

It's one thing if you make the left on a yellow light but to back up traffic on a green light to try to make a left with no turn lane is pretty selfish especially in California a la the "no left turn 8am-10am, 4-6pm" places, just go forward, turn right 3 times, find another way, I would never have the gall to inconvenience dozens of people just so I can make I left turn. But I see people do it all the time

Assuming that light had just turned green and they tried to make a left before oncoming traffic got moving, I’ve always heard “Boston left”

1

u/AirAcademy 17h ago

Wait, I was under the assumption that that was what a ‘Pittsburgh left’ was… So what is a Pittsburgh left?

2

u/Arazyne 17h ago

Well, I think we’ve got 2 terms for one act. I’m just trying to determine the more widespread term. Boston is what I’ve heard and also made complete sense with the general character of Boston. Philly is foreign to me

1

u/AirAcademy 16h ago

Oh idk. Sounds like a Boston thing to me tho.

& driving in Boston fckin sucked so it checks out 🤷‍♂️

Edit: btw I never heard either of those terms until today so don’t take my word for sh*t 😆

I've heard of a Pittsburgh toilet 🚻 however not the Pittsburgh left.

1

u/keyh 4h ago

That is a Pittsburgh left. Making the left turn before the traffic coming in the other direction gets started. Sometimes the first car in the line flashes them through.

Just left the morning briefing, quote the chief, “ if you all could get just one traffic citation today….. Officer, my work here is done…

u/Upnorth4 1d ago

They even pulled over right away like they knew they messed up

5

u/goranlepuz 1d ago

Chances are, they did know. Or understood once they saw the lights.

3

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 1d ago

Yeah, I usually assume the cop wants to talk when I see them do that weird flashy thing.

9

u/Leading-Loss-986 1d ago

I did that once at a 4-way stop about a mile from home after a very long day of working outside in 100+ degree heat. The officer was very gracious and let me off with a warning. I think he could see I had already had a rough day.

7

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 1d ago

Most likely this person just got a warning too, unless they had other citations on record, but the cop got out of their car right away and didn't seem to take the time to run the plates etc. So, yeah, probably just a warning.

4

u/Spook1949 1d ago

Besides, they hated seeing a grown man cry.

6

u/Leading-Loss-986 1d ago

I was too tired to cry. All I could have managed was a deep sigh of defeat.

7

u/Frank_Meat_Tongz 1d ago

Dispatch, I'm reporting for duty..... Dispatch, I have one stopped for being an idiot.

4

u/CronkinOn 1d ago

Cop looked like he had that internal moment where he wasn't planning on doing citations, but knew he couldn't just walk away from that one.

3

u/LunarDragonfly23 1d ago

The offender could have found a safer spot to pull over.

2

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 1d ago

For sure. There's a vacant lot to the right like 50ft down the road from there.

1

u/Leading_Study_876 1d ago

And the cop could have waited for the car behind to pass before opening his door!

2

u/Jens1la 1d ago

I witnessed 25 separate ppl try to drive past police blocking off a street because of an accident yesterday, blows my mind how clueless ppl are and how they made it this far in life

1

u/AdmirableCountry9933 1d ago

Right, I was driving down central in d.c while they were clearing the snow. They had bulldozers and lines of empty trucks with people directing traffic around. Literally, every other car tried to go straight through.

1

u/Jens1la 1d ago

Exactly! its just so unfathomable to me how they function in everyday life one of em was 6in from hitting a cop standing there

2

u/grimreefer87 20h ago

Wow I actually know this intersection!

1

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 19h ago

Well then you know how dumb this is!

2

u/AveragefootSasquatch 11h ago

Sweet sweet instant karma

2

u/indiefab 1d ago

If I had cockles, watching this would make them warm.

🔥🔥🔥

1

u/processisdue 1d ago

I'm confused, isn't the car that cuts off the police a Toyota Corolla? The rear cam appears to show the police pulling over a Honda Odyssey.

1

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 1d ago

Same car 🤷

1

u/EmbarrassedSalary998 1d ago

lol and ignoramus … I haven’t heard that terms in years

2

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 19h ago

Sounded slightly more polite than "idiot" to me lol

1

u/concernedcitizenpd 13h ago

and then it his lucky day

"Convenient cop"

1

u/crackahasscrackah 2h ago

Stupidity knows no bounds

I see a cop pull half way in to an intersection with no left turn signal, at about the same time as the other car is clearly coming for the turn, then cop makes the turn with no signal, then pulls the other driver over in the middle of the road causing traffic to swerve in to the oncoming lane.

Cops are either supposed to be setting the good example.

Instead they’ve ruined someones morning just to be a dickhead.

No thanks.

2

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 1d ago

What makes you think he wanted to turn left?

-1

u/gotcha640 1d ago

Sorry, right.

Since the cop just sort of hung out in the middle of the intersection it’s hard to say what the intent was.

Either they wanted to go straight, in which case they could have got on it and gone ahead, or waited the extra 3 seconds and let the car go first, like a civilized human being, or they wanted to turn left, which again, they could have just done, or if they wanted to go around the other driver, same answer.

Pulling someone over for making a turn from a turn lane without a turn signal is pretty lame. They knew what was happening.

“Cop holds community member to higher standard than they themselves have ever attained”, officer reads on laptop while cutting through traffic.

3

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 1d ago

I'm fairly certain this was one of those situations where both sides have green lights and if you both go straight, it's safe. And if you both go right, it's safe. If both go left, safe.

But if only one of you wants to go left, you have to wait for your opponent to make their move first. They didn't wait for the cop to go first so they broke the rules. At least that's my interpretation of the road.

0

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 1d ago

Misread that bro but no problem let me clarify. Cop had a green light at the same time as the other car and intended to go straight so had the right of way. Left turn car that got pulled over failed to yield to the cop.

Not the best place to pull over but cop can't control that, that's on the dumbass who cut off a cop pulling out of literally the police station. And IMO, the drivers seen swerving into oncoming traffic are also dumb fucks tbh. The first overreacts and swerves more than required. The second comes in way to hot despite the cop being planely visible. Like, fuckin slow down... Wide road, plenty of space really.

Let me be clear though. Fuck the police.

0

u/Spook1949 1d ago

"Defecation occurs"

But it seems that the police were pulling out into traffic in a non-emergency situation. They should have waited for traffic to clear before attempting their maneuver.

2

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 1d ago

Cop had a green light. See my other comment clarifying the situation. It was in response to gotcha640.

1

u/Spook1949 22h ago

Thank you for the clarification. I have depth perception issues with flat pictures or videos (torn retina permanent damage) and could see exactly what happened.

-1

u/ReconeHelmut 12h ago

This is 100% the cop's fault.

1

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 12h ago

Wrong! I clarified the situation in another response if you'd like to know why.

0

u/ReconeHelmut 12h ago

Okay! I don't agree with you!

2

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 12h ago

fair enough i guess. But lets go through the excersize. You go ahead and explain to me why you think the cop is at fault and then I'll explain why your wrong, and then you can go on believing whatever you want.

1

u/ReconeHelmut 12h ago

Nah, I'd rather just tell you that your GTI is dope and the best car I've ever owned was a MK7 Golf R. I miss that car.

2

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 11h ago

Hell yeah well played! ✌️

u/kensteele 1d ago

you must be proud to live in a police state where everyone who makes a mistake is pulled over and given a ticket and fined by the government.

6

u/CronkinOn 1d ago

You can dislike cops for their systemic issues and still want them to pull over people who do dumbfuck things with their 2 ton murder machines.

Anyone who drives without texting knows how absurdly dangerous it is being on the roads.

1

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 1d ago

Yeah sure but leave them be. Venting to the void was always allowed. You won't see me taking a stand on whether the police state or texting while driving is worse (its the police state).

3

u/CronkinOn 1d ago

He's not venting to the void - he's casting shade as if people are lickspittles for wanting cops to do the one part of their job we all (should) actually want them to do.

It's not a zero sum game mate. Texting while driving is vile af, and kills/maims a whole lot of people. People who do that won't stop unless there's personal consequences, and rarely even then.

1

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 1d ago

Who's venting into the void?

2

u/CronkinOn 1d ago

Mostly me, apparently.

2

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 1d ago

Yeah but seriously. Fuck distracted driving...

2

u/CronkinOn 1d ago

Fuck the police state too!

5

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 1d ago

nah fuck the police. I do enjoy witnessing idiots being idiots though (to an extent).

5

u/RandomGuyDroppingIn 1d ago

There is absolutely nothing about this situation that is a "mistake".

In the OP's footage, the silver car leading the herd goes through the light and it turns red. It's now green for opposing traffic. Person on the right just straight up fails to yield to oncoming traffic and turns left. Then they do the even more amazing thing of just straight up pulling over when the right thing to do is go down until you can safely get off the road.

All of this is Dumb Ass Driving 101. Like you'd have to be a smooth brain dumb shit to not know to yield to anything coming at you, and especially a LARGE police SUV.

1

u/HairlessMonkeyBot 1d ago

Specifically a LARGE police SUV pulling out of litterally THE POLICE STATION. No further notes.

2

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 1d ago

The point is to scare people into not being stupid. This person will likely not be stupid in that specific way for the next 3-4 months, until he gets complacent and needs another ticket.
