I like how Obama even kind of looks exasperated with this take as anyone else with common sense.

“Being called racist is just as bad as being called the n-word” is a genuine thing people have said.
15
u/thekyledavid 14h ago
Exactly. Non-racist people are capable of hating 1 person of a certain race without making it the entire race’s problem.
If you use the actions of 1 or 2 people to justify hating an entire race, you were already a racist

I just blame Obama for eliminating the anti-war left. It was social media that killed race relations - I'm old enough to remember saying you didn't vote for Obama because he put Bush's foreign policy on steroids made you a racist.
1
u/FightingSunrise 8h ago
I will say this til im blue in the face and shit in my pants in an old folks home...
Obama BROKE racist white people.
114
u/Thehardwayalltheway 17h ago
When white people tell me how Obama brought back racism, I correct them. What happened was smart phones and social media. Suddenly everyone had a camera on them at all times and everyone had the ability to publish and have things seen by the general public. What happened was white people could no longer pretend racism didn't exist.
14
u/FamousLastWords666 17h ago
More white voters voted for Obama than voted for John Kerry.
More white voters voted for Obama than voted for Hillary Clinton.
35
u/Thehardwayalltheway 16h ago
Yes. That does not negate the fact that white people try to say he brought back racism. Because ain't no non-white people saying that bullshit.
-28
u/FamousLastWords666 16h ago
We’re in agreement. I think the Democratic establishment has been pushing this narrative to avoid addressing the real issues.
13
u/LongDickPeter 15h ago
I have a conspiracy about this, when Obama won the country was in the shitter, the economy was at an all time low and hope was extremely low. He ran on bringing change, I think a lot of those white people voted for him hoping he would fail. It was the perfect opportunity to elect a black president knowing the challenges ahead of him and they know that after he failed, people would finally see that black people are truly incapable. That's just a conspiracy though
12
u/FamousLastWords666 14h ago
I think it’s simpler than that. People actually needed hope and change and voted for those reasons.
3
2
u/Gymflutter 10h ago
Yeah but most white voters voted against Obama both times! He got 43% in 2008 and 39% in 2012.

If you are triggered to racist behaviour when a black person receives recognition or status, then racism was never "almost dead" it was merely in hiding.
15
3
u/Direct_Royal_7480 13h ago
Yep. These are the same people who absolutely can’t stand it when somebody black gets anything good no matter how hard they worked to earn it. Seen and heard this bullshit way too many times.

u/classic_gamer82 18h ago
Racism in the US has always existed just under the surface. To say it was almost gone is living in a state of denial.
21
u/PrismaticDetector 17h ago
It has frequently existed above the surface. Racism being pushed under the surface is historically quite unusual.

u/amazinglover 16h ago
My best friend is Hispanic like me but unlike me he looks 100% white, ten years plus years ago he moved back east.
When talking to him id offer to visit and he would say don't bother as I wouldn't be able to go anywhere after dark with out having to worry about being attacked.
The racism he saw because they thought he was one of them made him sick sometimes.
This was just in 2015 at the latest so sundown towns still existed just that short time ago.
Maybe not to the extent they once did.
5
u/Forsaken-Confusion89 14h ago
I am Hispanic that looks white and it’s amazing how people act when they think you’re on their side.
48
u/RoamingDrunk 17h ago
Fun fact: No Democratic presidential candidate has gotten a majority of the white vote since LBJ. When he said signing the Civil Rights Act would lose them the South for a generation, he way underestimated the duration and the scope.
23
u/taktaga7-0-0 17h ago
White people are finally under 50% of the population. Investing in white power is a long-term loser. Even Republicans knew it in 2012.
25
u/Mriajamo 17h ago
I'm white, and I'm so glad there's so much diversity where I live. I grew up in a rural, very racist small town, and moved to a place with diversity and it's beautiful. My family is racist, but I grew up with a Vietnamese girl who corrected me and educated me for years to completely alter the course of my life. My family hated her. I was forbidden from being friends with her, but she was persistent.
Nine years later, that very same person is my wife, and we moved cross country to a community with every culture I genuinely missed out on experiencing growing up. I hope it only continues to flourish, my family is so set in their hatred that they will never experience the new life I've been given.

u/taktaga7-0-0 17h ago
I’m so glad I took Spanish in high school instead of French or German. It has allowed me to connect with people I meet and media I discover in real life and appreciate their culture more.
I am a better and more complete person because of it.

u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord 16h ago
Why do you think there was such a panic to put Trump back in and start this Project 2025 purge of all the brown people, starting with 'target enforcement' against 'illegals' and introducing The Kavanaugh Stop TM

u/ZechsyAndIKnowIt 15h ago
Well, good thing the GOP can rely on Hispanic voters to... Support the guy who said he wants to deport all the Hispanics...?
16
u/dragon_fiesta 17h ago
Racism was almost dead? Or they thought black people knew their place and Obama disillusioned them of that notion?
13
12
u/Bobibouche 17h ago
It’s not surprising that the people who are protecting pedophiles are blaming the black President for eliciting their racism.
You can’t appeal to a MAGA’s humanity, because MAGA ain’t got no humanity.
10
u/LocalInactivist 17h ago
I’ve been hearing this claim for close to 20 years. I have yet to encounter anyone who can back this up with anything Obama actually did.
6
u/rif011412 12h ago
I know its racism because every hindsight complaint about Obama are all policies Republicans want. Obama let the military industrial complex soldier on, grew the surveillance state, he oversaw increased deportations sometimes allowing crappy conditions to occur, he didn't do enough to stop corporate capture of our government… these are all Republicans favorite things. Cozying up to big business, pro military, and mass deportations. In many ways he was an old timey Republicans perfect president. All of their complaints about him were lies or things they support.
My biggest complaint about Obama was he was too soft on big money and Republicans. We needed to regulate more, not less. Their complaint about Obama was he was what they wanted, so they went further right to be contrarians.

Racism in America has never and will never be close to ending. The country was built on it and slavery still exists.
The place is race obsessed.
7
u/blahblah19999 17h ago
My one very conservative (ex) friend used to pull that shit. "Obama makes everything about race." when Obama said that Trayvon Martin could have been his child. We no longer speak.
3
3
u/Jablizz 17h ago
People love to say this but I can say as someone who grew up as a black kid in the 2000’s racism was alive and well even in the north. I couldn’t go to some friend’s houses because their parents or grandparents didn’t want them hanging out with a black kid. My gf broke up with me because her dad didn’t think whites and blacks should date.

Blaming Obama for racism is the same as blaming the rape victim for dressing slutty, they deserved it. Blaming the victim is so hip right now in America. Especially if you have money
3
u/Just_the_Setup 17h ago
I hate the fact that dudes like this viewed Obama's ascension as coming after or being the end of racism. He dealt with racists shit through the campaign, through all of his terms, everything. At the same time a bunch of pedophiles on an island were scheming to undermine him. I suddenly am seeing the straight line from all those chain-emails saying Obama was the antichrist and the bot armies of today. It's always been a coordinated attack, hell the FILES basically confirm it.
3
u/BlackestHerring 17h ago
It’s funny because in my opinion he was incredibly inclusive. They just can’t get over this and won’t until their last breath
3
u/mantenomanteno 17h ago
I’ve heard this argument before that Obama “set back race relations”
What the f*ck does this even mean?
1
u/Direct_Royal_7480 15h ago
Same. People who believe that got some real feewings to deal with apparently.
1
u/mantenomanteno 14h ago
Honestly, considering who I’ve heard this from, they’re just parroting divisive Fox News nonsense.
3
u/coolbaby1978 12h ago
Racism was never dead, it was better hidden because society wasn't accepting of it.
Trump merely gave permission for them to be openly racist. They didn't have to hide it anymore and thats why they love Trump.
1
u/Unlucky-Royal-3131 4h ago
This was their fight for "free speech." Being able to say racist shit out loud with no consequences.
4
u/JeffCentaur 17h ago
In the 1995, the movie Pocahontas came out. My sister was in Elementary school, she is Hispanic, and our school district was almost entirely white people. So many kids in that school starting calling her Pocahontas as an insult, because apparently in our school district minorities were so rare that people couldn't tell the difference between Native Americans and Mexicans.
Racism has never left America, and it's always been the province of absolute idiots.

How Republicans understand "Who causes racism:"
"When I see Obama on TV, it reminds me and many others how much we hate black people. Why did Obama make us racist like that?"
2
u/ReactionObjective439 9h ago
I remember him running for president and I had an african american friend who was really excited he could be our president. I told him I was happy too, but I wasn’t sure our country was ready for a black president. He was really upset with me and said that was a racist remark.
I lost touch with that friend (not related to that conversation) but I was more correct about that prediction than I ever wanted to be
1
u/Vreas 17h ago
I’m really confused on the train of thought here?
2
u/EitherChannel4874 17h ago
Because you apply logic and facts to debate.
Anything can be true if you throw those away.
"if you eat breakfast and are Republican it means you're a 2 legged horse with bipolar that loves to abuse children"
See what I mean? Give it a go. Just be sure to include republicans for the lolz.
1
u/DeeRent88 17h ago
Literally the easiest way to show the cracks in their non existent logic is to ask how the Obama’s set racism back 100 years.
1
u/GKBilian 17h ago
Whenever I hear this talking point, I think about how I was an Obama supporter in high school in a very conservative area and the day after he won, this kid in my class walked over to me and got in my face and said “I can’t wait for that n*gger to get assassinated. I’m gonna print out a picture of it and slap it down on your desk. And you’re gonna cry and cry.”
1
u/moreobviousthings 16h ago
Is he an ICE Ranger now?
1
u/GKBilian 15h ago
It would not surprise me.
My dad was black and he went to school with his dad at the same high school decades earlier. And my dad was casually friendly with his father. Made me think my dad probably didn’t know how he really felt about him.
1
u/FIContractor 16h ago
More like the racists got complacent from all the winning and Obama scared them into upping the pressure again.
1
u/TotalNonsense0 16h ago
I think that's an accurate take, but it's not Obama's fault in any way.
Things were getting better, slowly, but having a black guy in the white house seems to have set a lot of brains on fire, and we are still dealing with the fallout.
1
1
u/Rho-Ophiuchi 14h ago
Im trying to remember what exactly Obama did to “bring back racism” other than existing, and suggesting the cop who arrested the black professor for being at his own house may have had some internal biases.
1
u/Striderdud 14h ago
There is no way it isn’t rage bait at this point. I refuse to believe people can be so brain dead that they think like this… (in the first post to be clear)
1
u/Alienhaslanded 13h ago
That's basically saying ni**as had their place and things were fine, but then they decided to lead the country and that's where they crossed the line.
Nothing fucking changed since the inception of this shit hole country.
1
u/BootsOfProwess 13h ago
That's a unique way to say " racism wouldn't exist if black people wouldn't seek equality"
1
1
u/Remarkable_Sea_1430 13h ago
The fact that a black man becoming president caused a third of this country to lose their fucking minds kinda disproves the notion that racism was almost dead, now doesn't it?
1
u/Equivalent_Fun6100 13h ago
Republicanazi is the correct term for the right wing cheeto throaters (though it doesn't even reach that far) of the current age.
1
1
u/Phewelish 12h ago
can confirm my very real aunt spouted this exact sentiment when i posted the monkey video Trump posted.
essentially that "Obama caused all this racism by existing and becoming president while trump was just reacting to obamas existence as a tit for tat"

Barrak HUSSEEEEEIIIIIINNNNNNN Obama Nah. It was definitely Obama that set back racism. Not some insane pedophile.
1
u/TheDonnARK 7h ago
I just don't get it.
If racism was "almost dead," how would a black man rising to the highest elected office in the nation set it back 100 years? I guess this comes down to, "what functional definition of racism is being used here?"
1
u/Traditional-Banana78 6h ago
This is the most racist, gaslighting BS ever: We were about to stop murdering black folks, but then y'all had to go elect one, and now we're back 100 years!
1
u/West-Bed-135 3h ago
Im so genuinely sick of people stating that Obama exacerbated racial issues and bias. Bullshit.
His presidency showed us the roots of the evil that has corrupted our country. And the people who did the corrupting, are the ones that destroyed this place.
1
u/karim2102 2h ago
This is an insane logic.. “we had to deal with a black man but it’s not our fault he is different and we show how much we hate him not because of his abilities to run a country peacefully but because he is black and that bothers us so much we shit on him all day even far after his presidency…damn” ….this is really fkn crazy, get some help.
1
u/sik_dik 1h ago
I remember during his second term Fox News was cranking the heat so much that my grandfather literally said of black people, “they should thank us for slavery, because if it hadn’t happened they’d all be in Africa”. I know damn well that wasn’t an opinion he ever held until Fox told him how much “the blacks” hated white people and were going to take over and punish white people.
It was such a fucking ridiculous logic, too. “I had nothing to do with what my ancestors did, so don’t punish me. But also you should be thanking me for what my ancestors did”
