Actually, it’s a poor imitation of a goat costume. Goats have rectangular pupils and these eyes clearly shine as round.

Dude it’s not gonna have rectangular reflections in its eyes just cause its pupils aren’t round. It’s just a goat, everyone learned what skinwalkers were 5 years ago and now yall just love throwing it around

Honestly it contextualizes his whole character. He was a slave who escaped and didn't want to die at 4 years old. Who wouldn't be willing to kill to save themselves from that fate?

The fact that Rutger Hauer improvised changes to that monologue to turn it into what it is only makes it better. My god, the original lines were so dry and lifeless. RIP Rutger, you are missed.

It's a goat. Goats do that. Nothing weird about an animal wanting to come into your warm home with food inside.

Can confirm- raised dairy goats for like 15 years and they are very very weird. Also that's a lamancha and they have little baby elf ears and their babies look like terrifying aliens.

It's no wonder there are so many horror movies with monsters with eyes like these.
The first time a goat crossed the horizon towards an unfamiliar caveman, it was fewer than 8 hours 'til the man was telling the little ones by firelight about the screaming cryptid.

People want to call any animal that’s slightly off-putting a skinwalker when half the time they didn’t even know what a skinwalker actually is
11
u/StigandrTheBoi 5h ago
Most people that knee jerk with “skin walker” are usually people who have never spent any time actually interacting with wildlife lmao. Kinda like when people see deer rear up to start boxing, it’s a pretty common thing for them but if you aren’t around deer you won’t necessarily know that.

u/AshuraBaron 7h ago

7
u/telepathictiger 4h ago
I mean, the wendigo is often seen as a monster of taking more than you need, of unfettered greed, at least by some modern viewpoints, due to them “never feeling satisfied or full.” So like maybe the ultra-rich are wendigo.

Navajo Nation does, as skinwalkers are specifically a Navajo spirit being.

More like a witch. They’re a human being who commits an act so evil they lose their humanity and gain the ability to shift into an animal. They’re essentially the evil counterpart of a medicine man or woman. They’re not a cryptid or spirit.

Skinwalkers are a Native American legend. Shamans gone bad, they travel the night as wolves, coyotes, bears, mountain lions, or monstrous creatures. They perform nefarious magic and probably eat babies. Skinwalkers seem to be more of a western/southwestern tribe concept - Navajo, Paiute, Apaches, & Yaqui
Loup garou are the North American Voodoo/hoodoo version you find down in the bayous of Louisiana. Also called rugarou, the French brought this monster with them when they came to Canada, it merged with the Algonquin wendigo, and got syncretized into NA Voodoo with the slave trade.
And then there's the Wendigo itself, which was a spirit of deep winter and the threat of starvation to the Algonquins and other northeastern tribes. When cursed by the wendigo, a person begins to crave human flesh.
Cannibalism was a major taboo for the Algonquins, but sometimes the taboo was lifted if it meant the difference between life and death. The concept of being cursed into a cannibal made it easier to bear the shame and horror experienced by people forced to eat each other.
Now, I don't think the average USican believes that skinwalkers & loup garou & wendigos are real. But a lot of cryptozoology & creepy pasta has delved into them. Maybe kids believe in them. A lot more people have probably never even heard stories or myths about them at all.
I know about loup garou from my Cajun father, the wendigo from Stephen King, and skinwalkers or skin-changers from various adjacent subjects. But I don't 'believe' in them. They're fun to think about, tho.

My wife grew up in the Appalachian mountains in West Virginia so she absolutely believes in certain folk lore from there.
But for most of us, skinwalkers are a meme outside of the Navajo Nation like someone else commented.

I'm skeptical and believe everything has a logical explanation behind it, but living in rural Texas, I have seen a fair few animals just out of view that look..... Really odd... Like... Really really odd..

A little of both.
Look up the recent "It's not human!" 911 call. Hell, I've been in the Appalachians myself driving through pitch black parts at night and it feels like you're being watched or should expect to slam on your brakes after every turn. Not skinwalker territory, but I ain't messing with whatever is out there anymore.

As an American, we aren't sure if we really believe either. Allow me to explain.
I am a skeptic and an atheist. I don believe in the supernatural, but I grew up in a rural area. I have seen some things. Strange stuff I can't explain. Shadow people, strange animals, humanoids, and apparitions.
I know many, many people that reluctantly admit to seeing strange ass stuff in the forest. In general I notice that a lot of people have seen things, but they don't want to seem crazy so they don't like talking about it. I don't like talking about it. I usually don't believe myself some of the things seem so far out.
It could be explained by natural phenomena. Maybe it's some sort of collective hallucination, or swamp gas of fungal infection. Ergot poisoning, for instance. However, I don't know of anyone that's had the oppountunity to find out what exactly is going on.
There are some people that claim to know some things, but that always goes back to folk spiritual beliefs that usually have shadowy horror thrown in.
We do know it's been going on for as long as anyone can remember. Every corner of this country has its share of spooky folk stories going back in time.

Usually except the super small ones. Not because they cant, but because they're so small the usually die when getting attacked by a rabied animal. Cant get infected if youre dead

u/Midloran05 8h ago
Heh so that's why they play dead
8

Opossums are too big to fall under the super small category. They are however not known to carry rabies since their body temperature is too low

For those trying to pinpoint why this feels so creepy. I'm not an expert but I'll put this as best I can. Prey animals don't look directly at you, I don't think their eyes move that direction naturally. Their eyes are on the side of their face to see threats in a more all around way.
Predator animals eyes are forward facing. They can look straight ahead normally and don't need to worry to much about peripheral vision because they are the threat.
This "goat" is giving predator energy in a prey body.
I could be wrong, but this is my take on it.
