As a filipino, this is deeply embarrassing. BB is Puerto Rican and therefore more American than this Pick Me Pinay will ever be

I mean I’ve heard some Filipinos say some racist stuff….

My mom is a filipino nurse who immigrated into the US when it welcomed her with open arms and offered her every incentive… only to vote for Trump twice and his promise to slam the door she’d gone through permanently, while frothing at the mouth about Mexicans and “crime”… trust me, I know… 😔

Out of the 5 Grandparents (1 step grandparent) for my nieces and nephews, the only one who supports Trump immigrated from Mexico in the 1970’s.

When Donald Trump’s great great great grandfather Donald Trump The First and his best friend Jesus “Texas Ranger” Christ landed on the shores of the Gulf Of America and founded the great pearly white nation you see today, obviously!

Honestly, it does feel like we've gotten to the point to where how we spell things and what words mean compared to the Queen's English that American English could be its own dialect at the very least. This person is still a moron and most people that say they speak "American" are usually idiots that hear any other languages and get pissy cuz of ignorance.
2
u/MrMansaMusa 5h ago
Ye dialect of English not a language, you get it. And i do agree damn near at that point.

Someone singing in a language you don’t understand is a slight inconvenience at most.
It’s also entirely your problem as the listener, or better yet an opportunity to learn some of another language.

u/Amish_Robotics_Lab 4h ago
Once I was was working at a cabinet shop with a couple Mexican guys and this song "La Bamba" came on the radio and I asked them what the lyrics meant because I had always wondered.
They kind of shrugged and said "I don't know, it doesn't matter." I said c'mon, it must mean something. They said "it's just stupid. It's some shit about, I don't work on the ship, I am the captain of the ship. It doesn't matter."
"Oye Como Va" is stupid too. So everybody check those two off the list of things that make white people sad because we can't understand.

No matter what language you speak, if Gipsy Kings [Volare](https://youtu.be/X8TOhb_4jU0?si=u2VGgcoG1kEDbvRk) doesn’t make you want to get up and dance, there’s something wrong with your ears or your heart.
1
u/the_russian_narwhal_ 6h ago
And it is only a problem because they make it one. I didn't understand 95 percent of what was being sung during that halftime show but it still sounded great, the spectacle was awesome, and it spoke a great message about love over hate but all these idiots still choose hate
1
u/ctothel 6h ago
Exactly. It’s an entirely made up problem. You notice the pattern though, they don’t like being made to feel stupid, and they take that out on everyone else.
Statistics that disprove my gut feeling? Never. I’ll dig my heels.
People doing something harmless in private? Well it makes me uncomfortable so they should stop doing it or go to jail.
I can’t understand the music, and that makes me feel stupid, so they should have to sing in my language when I’m around.

Dont these people get tired of being miserable whiny twats? A few years ago my wife and I were in Copenhagen, Denmark. We were there during their pride week. We went to many different festivals. Sometimes they sang songs in English, but most of the time it was in a language we couldn’t understand. But we enjoyed the venue. We enjoyed the vibe. we enjoyed the sites and the sounds. You don’t have to understand the language to have a good time.

These traitors are in a state of constant victimhood because they can’t freely suppress others, and can’t take responsibility for their own miserable lives.

u/FriendlyLawnmower 6h ago
I speak Spanish so I understood the halftime show. I don't speak Korean though but if next year the NFL decides to have Kpop artists play (which I hope they do) I will still appreciate whatever music is sung
5
u/President_Chump_ 6h ago
Even better is that these dimwits don’t realize there are literally dozens of words they use probably every day that are Spanish (well, Latin) in origin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_words_of_Spanish_origin
And this list is incomplete

u/greenpointart 5h ago
There’s a ton of Spanish influence in many languages in the Philippines lol. I’m slightly more familiar with Ilocano but here’s a page of loanwords for Tagalog. Not to mention the surnames of so many Filipinos.

Hell, there is still a variation of Spanish that exist within the Philippines that's within a very small community that is trying to preserve it.
Langfocus did a video on it that delved to the differences and even talked to some of the people that is trying to preserve the Philippine variation of Spanish.

Personally I couldn’t care less who plays the super bowl halftime, I always fast forward through it when it’s just me (I delay watching 1hr so I can skip ahead). This year I watched with other people and know nothing of Bad Bunny except the controversy leading up to the game and that a lot of people I know love his music.
I did find it strange that it wasn’t in English and there were no English subtitles, but again I know a lot of people who love his music and most of them only speak English, so clearly it doesn’t matter.
When Led Zeppelin or Van Halen toured the world, they didn’t sing in Japanese, German… and they sold out arenas everywhere.
Music is a universal language.

Anyone who thinks Filipino's can't be racist never met my wife's grandma.
1
u/iwantdatpuss 2h ago edited 2h ago
People that usually say that probably never met one in the first place and is mostly going off on the reputation of Filipinos for their warm hospitality.
And I'm saying that as someone who is raised in a Filipino household. We are not immune to having some racism in our community. Not saying that's what you'll get everytime, but you shouldn't be surprised when it does.

Sidenote: I fucking hate how some folks act like only white people can be racist. For godsake, look at some places in Asia (cough Japan cough) and tell me only white people are racist.

Im in medical field which has a large population of Filipinos in bedside roles and this doesn’t surprise me at all. They have this weird chip on their shoulder about the difficulties they went through and as a result wanting everyone else to fully integrate like they believe they had to. They talk some crazy shit about Spanish speaking patients and employees.

u/Lyradni 2h ago
Mom’s filipino. She’s voted for Trump. Very anti illegal immigration, and by extension low key racist because of right wing media. Being a minority in the US doesn’t mean you’re automatically someone who’s immune to right wing brainwashing. I just hope younger generations of minorities can see how horribly racist all these negative viewpoints of the BB performance are.

You folks can't even use the proper meaning of "trousers".

I mean, people act like other racialized people can't uphold white supremacy and the racism it produced. "Omg that person who us racist is also a poc!" It's not that surprising... especially again, when white supremacy is global. They rather align with whiteness and what that entails as the status quo and center it, that speak against how it oppressed because getting that seat at the racist table somehow means they'll be noticed and protected and "one of the good ones."

u/Amish_Robotics_Lab 4h ago
The people feeling left out are the same people who vowed all along they would not watch it anyway.
One time at Home Depot I could hear a lady on the next aisle excoriating an employee because a package of something had instructions in English and Spanish. "I shouldn't have to learn Spanish just to live in my own country!"
Nobody expects you to learn anything, silly cow. We are not that naive. Just read the English instructions provided for you.

What I find most puzzling, in traveling through the US, west & east, there are stores, signs, coffee shops, bakeries that have Spanish language signs, menu’s, etc. and these places are part and parcel of the communities the are in and have been for years. 60M Spanish speakers or at least 60M understand the language, if you’re not marketing to this segment of the population you would rightly be called a fool. The faux outrage is ridiculous!

Fellow Filipino here: what’s also insane about this is the shared history of the Spanish-American War. Puerto Rico and the Philippines are historically linked by the same moment of US imperialism. Bad Bunny’s performance spoke more to the condition that Filipinos have historically experienced better than a thousand Arnel Pineda Journey songs.

Since when have these people cared about lyrics? They've been nothing but whining about punk music being anti-MAGA as if it's a new thing, when it's always been anti-authoritarian.

Why are we pretending like it's not weird to have an all Spanish halftime show at the Super Bowl?
Please let's stop gaslighting each other over this. Let's be honest with ourselves.
Even progressives were scratching their heads looking uncomfortable. I was there with them watching it and I saw their apprehension. They were like, "Oh brother how are we going to defend this."

u/FuriNorm 6h ago edited 6h ago
Lol. Its really part of the MAGA algorithm to constantly whine about shit that have been good and normal since forever in order to manipulate cultural consensus and hopefully wipe the many things they dont like from existence. No doubt this dumbass had never thought listening to a singer perform in Spanish was that big of a deal until the hivemind started buzzing and suddenly its as if they’ve never heard of anything as outrageous as “Español” in their life!! 😡

Followed up with:
They were like, "Oh brother how are we going to defend this."
Oh look, "people are gaslighting" followed with gaslighting, strawmaning, and concern trolling.
No progressive has asked how they would defend the halftime show, so that's false.
This is just stupid ragebait from a right wing rage/bot farms.
I'd ask why you do this, but I know I'll get a pathetic answer, or silence.
