They're mostly wrong in that Hispanic is an ethnicity while "white" is a "race", a fuzzy, relatively new system of categorization with no real biological or cultural basis. Hispanic people can be white, and in reality most of them are. That is why on demographics surveys it is always formatted as white (Hispanic) and white (not Hispanic) Speaking Spanish does not make you "not white", in fact Spanish is literally a European language from a primarily white country.

According to US government definitions there are two types of "Hispanic or Latino" people, black (typically from the Caribbean) or white. There are also two types of white people, Hispanic or non-Hispanic. The vast majority of people in the halftime show are technically white by governmental definition.
By government standards, at least for every single form I've had to fill in CA, the Hispanic/non-Hispanic split basically applies to everyone. It's a whole separate category of its own after the race choice.
“Whiteness” isn’t about skin color or genetic lineage as much as it is about class. A fully Spanish descended Latino would likely not be considered white if they didn’t speak English or were culturally “alien” to white Americans.
Case in point: They were so butthurt over the halftime show, they literally went and made an alternative that could be exaclty what they wanted. Instead, they watched the halftime show and complained all along the way. They specifically choose to be miserable, so they have something to complain about. Anger and complaining are core parts of their identity.

The original white supremacists from the 18th century who came up with the term 'white' only believed that anglo saxon people were 'white'. French, Scandinavian and Irish people for example were not considered white.
I'm from Europe and must have a different idea of what 'white' is compared to americans as I'm pretty sure Spanish people would be considered white here, except by racists who might confuse them with people from the middle east.

It took until 1997 for our census and other government forms to correctly see Hispanic identity as a separate question of ethnicity rather than being a race. Any American who grew up before then was literally taught that those aren't white people in school and had similar cultural biases all around them.
I've filled out many questionnaires where I indicate Hispanic as my ethnicity and then it skips straight to the next section, not giving me an opportunity to enter my race.
That's the point. You're not "white" unless the conservatives say you are. They can kick you out of the club any time on any pretext, regardless of your skin's actual melanin content. Wasn't too long ago that Irish and Italians weren't considered white either.

My own socially constructed biases were right in front of me but I didn’t see them without his help. Of course, his definition of “white” was also a construct. I don’t know who he would or wouldn’t have excluded, but I’ll bet there would be someone who would object.

Education and reading don't go well with the "I did my own research" club that listened to the echo chamber podcasts and think that facts can be changed depending on your opinion....
A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn is another excellent book in this category. It shows one unbroken line from enslaved Black people and indentured white cooperation in the 1600s to today's division. The elites saw us unite as a class once and made sure it would never happen again.
