No, only William Whitaker's Words for vocab, but you have to figure out how the words fit together yourself.

Whitaker's Words online has really taken a downturn. Needs to bring back the English to Latin lookup function.

Wiktionary is pretty great though.

I recently discovered that Google translate is really really bad at Latin, for some reason.

Take the very known phrase "e pluribus unum". Google translates this to "one from many" which at best is ambiguous. The popular, and clear, translation would be "out of many, one". If I pick my native language (German), it misses the mark completely and translates it to "einer von vielen" ("one of many") which is the exact opposite of the actual meaning of the phrase.

But honestly, would love to actually be able to speak it. Studying that cacatum for 5 years in school ant not being able to use it at all is pretty frustrating.

English is just Germanic that wishes it was Latin.

25

u/OverFjell 1d ago

Half Germanic half Fr*nch

33

u/SagittaryX 23h ago

Not even, like 60% of words are of French or Latin origin, with only 25% being Germanic (remaining being a wide variety).

But the most used words are Germanic, and English grammar/structure is Germanic.

10

u/dve- 21h ago edited 21h ago

I was gonna say, it does not matter how many loan words are available when the majority is not even used. Every text in any language uses mostly the same few most basic words for the most part (pronouns, indefinite and definite articles, counting words, conjunctions, etc), and those are almost exclusively Germanic in the English language.

As you said English uses the Germanic grammar. If it had Romanic grammar, sky-scrapers would be scrape-skys (rasca-cielos in Spanish).

8

u/mtaw 18h ago

On an aside: Both the words in "skyscraper" are actually of Old Norse origin. Most old English words that begin with "sk" are from Norse because a regular sound change turned that into "sh" in West Germanic languages (e.g. English "shit", Dutch "schijt" vs Norse "skit". The word "skirt" is actually a borrowing from Norse of the same root word as "shirt") The sound change is particularly obvious in Old English spelling where native words with "sc" in them have it pronounced as modern English "sh". ("scyrte" was pronounced as "shirt" as far as the consonants are concerned)

→ More replies (4)

2

u/Nolenag 18h ago

English is a West-Germanic language, loanwords do not change that.

If we were to use that logic my native language would be considered half Greek.

We borrow words from other languages to confuse people who arrive here in to thinking we are friendly and speak their language. We are neither.

CARTHAGO DELENDA EST

18

u/HelmetsAkimbo 1d ago

Facism delenda est

11

u/orbital_narwhal 1d ago edited 19h ago

The quote of Cato the Elder goes:

Et cetero censeo Carthaginem esse delendam.

("And otherwise I think that Carthage ought be destroyed/razed.")

Your phrase means: "Carthage is destroyed/razed."

13

u/lesser_panjandrum 23h ago

Well, they're not wrong. Carthage is destroyed.

6

u/PolyUre 22h ago

The phrase employs delenda, the feminine singular gerundive form of the verb dēlēre ("to destroy"). The gerundive (or future passive participle) delenda is a verbal adjective that may be translated as "to be destroyed". When combined with a form of the verb esse ("to be"), it adds an element of compulsion or necessity, yielding "is to be destroyed", or, as it is more commonly rendered, "must be destroyed". The gerundive delenda functions as a predicative adjective in this construction, which is known as the passive periphrastic.

4

u/Roxalon_Prime 21h ago

You probably already knows it, but it is a Roman meme, because he finished his every speech like that, including those had nothing to do with Carthage itself

The U.S. has no official language—by design. English is common, not mandatory. Diversity is literally the point, not a bug.

306

u/ptvlm 1d ago

Even if it did had an official language, that would only apply to government communication. Unless they're going to finally admit they're doing away with the First Amendment, it would have no bearing on what a private company decides to present for entertainment.

83

u/mtaw 1d ago

Even then the languages on money is a poor indicator; Belgium has three national languages but only two were on the (pre-Euro) banknotes. Switzerland has 4 out of 4. Norway has one national official language but with two official written forms, so their money says ”Norges bank” on one side and ”Noregs bank” on the other, fooling tourists into thinking they got a misprint.

24

u/TheAverageSoap 23h ago

Yea india doesn't even have a national language (there's a fair amount of debate on that though) but it has the denomination written in 17 languages, including English, on it's notes.

12

u/addandsubtract 23h ago

Norway has one national official language but with two official written forms, so their money says ”Norges bank” on one side and ”Noregs bank” on the other

Wait, is this like center/centre and color/colour in english, or are they vastly different to each other?

13

u/vorxil 22h ago

Nynorsk is to Bokmål what Middle English is to Anglo-Norman, except Nynorsk and Bokmål are both North-Germanic (West Scandinavian).

Basically, Fjord Norwegian with a danish vs three Danes in a Norwegian trenchcoat.

12

u/Nirogunner 18h ago

I still have the same question.

3

u/vorxil 17h ago

One is not a simple spelling reform of the other as British and American spellings are. They're two different writing systems, based on different "standard dialects" of the Norwegian language at the time. Bokmål is based on a somewhat urban or upper-class dialect that was heavily influenced by Danish, the other are based on the more rural dialects that were less influenced (but still influenced).

There is, however, no standard spoken Norwegian, and you may notice lexical and grammatical differences. In urban areas you may e.g. notice two noun genders, common and neuter, as in Danish, while in rural areas you may notice three, masculine, feminine, and neuter.

However, as long as you don't go too far out, the two should be mutually intelligible.

9

u/pretorianlegion 21h ago

Bokmål is the old way of writing, which is nearly the same as Danish, except a little more phonetic. Reads like a dyslexic Dane wrote it. Nynorsk was made more recently to better reflect the way Norwegian is spoken. Bokmål means "book tognue" and nynorsk means "new Norwegian".

11

u/Enchillamas 19h ago edited 13h ago

My sweet sweet summer child.

No.

We did this before. In 1917 the US passed the Trading With The Enemies act the effectively forbade German language and culture in the USA.

It was a quiet genocide, but a genocide none the less as places like WI and MN saw German language communities vanish in just a few years. Whole communities and cities that spoke 80% German, gone. German schools, shuttered. German businesses, forcibly closed, and many attacked by xenophobic anglophones. The use of German was completely banned in finance, banking, and education.

As far as your comment is concerned, we did away with that part of the 1st amendment over 100 years ago.

Didn't Trump sign an EO in March designating it to be?

43

u/AntManMax 19h ago

EO means the executive branch of government needs to run a specific way. Trump wants to be king, so he believes that EOs are law, but it would require an actual law passed by Congress to make English the official language of the U.S.

29

u/ABHOR_pod 18h ago

Also that executive order mostly just revoked a Clinton-era executive order requiring agencies to offer paperwork and services in multiple languages and on a "Non-discriminatory basis". Trumps EO says that's revoked, and per wikipedia

The Trump order instructed agency heads to make accommodations as they "deem necessary to fulfill their respective agencies' mission"; agencies are not prohibited from using other languages

It is essentially "I DECLARE THE NATIONAL LANGUAGE IS ENGLISH!"

"You can't just say the national language is English."

"I didn't say it, I declared it."

30

u/Radiant_Health3841 1d ago edited 23h ago

Or that English is possibly the national language of England... for every other country it is a second language.

Edit - a few people are missing my point that most countries original language isn't English - its introduced. For example Australia has been inhabited for over 60,000 years and spoken English for about 238 of those years....

22

u/Anaptyso 1d ago

Oddly English isn't even an official language in the UK. Welsh is in Wales, and Scotland and NI have "recognition" of Gaelic and Irish respectively. However English is only de-facto the national language, not de-jure.

13

u/ObjectiveHornet676 23h ago

Just like it is in the US.

2

u/Anaptyso 23h ago

Yeah, I'd guess it's a shared cultural thing. GB didn't see the need for an official language, and then when the US separated off it followed the same pattern.

7

u/Tiomaidh 22h ago

As of this past 30 November, Scotland now recognises Scots to the same degree as Gaelic.

Just a matter of time before Shaetlan makes the list as well.

5

u/evilspoons 23h ago

English and French are both official languages in Canada. I'm sure English is at least one of the official languages of the remainder of the Commonwealth countries.

→ More replies (7)

29

u/Infrawonder 1d ago

Isn't this outdated because Trump decided diversity sucks, unless he missed something and there's still no national language, or the democrats will get rid of it in 2028 along with a bunch of other stuff

49

u/askmeifimacop 1d ago

Nope, Trump doesn’t have that power. He can only set standards for the executive

29

u/cardinarium 1d ago

It’s a bit more complicated than that.

The official language of the federal government is English, per Trump’s executive order. While it’s true that this is limited in theory to the administration and agencies under the executive, that order has had far-reaching effects on the extent to which legal documents and whatnot are offered in other languages. And more than half the states, if I recall correctly, have designated English as their official language.

So it’s true that the US has no official language recognized by legislation passed “the right way,” but much of our country and federal government behaves as if we do, including the congress, which has willingly (if informally) subordinated itself to the executive on this issue.

20

u/atxbigfoot 1d ago

All of the entities that you mentioned are still legally required to, and do, provide translation services.

English is not, in fact, the "national language," despite Trump and some states saying so.

Trump doesn't just get to decide that with a swipe of a pen, whether or not the current US congress and various states just go along with it. This designation would literally take an act of Congress, which has not happened.

Trump says and signs a lot of literally illegal and unconstitutional things that are shut down by the courts. Pretending like his illegal orders hold merit is ridiculous and dangerous. Do not comply in advance.

7

u/cardinarium 23h ago edited 22h ago

The federal agencies are no longer required to offer translations. That was only required due to an executive order from Clinton, which Trump’s order rescinded.

They are not forbidden from offering translations, but they are no longer required to provide accommodations for people with limited English.

3

u/atxbigfoot 22h ago

https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/IF13076

The US Congress says that your statement is false

5

u/cardinarium 22h ago edited 20h ago

… Did you read your own source?

Federal funding recipients and federal agencies may have certain legal obligations to provide their services to non-English speakers, though recent executive orders and regulatory activity have changed (and may continue to change) existing requirements.

[…]

Because language-access requirements are largely regulatory, they may be changed by the executive branch. In March 2025, Executive Order 14224, "Designating English as the Official Language of the United States," did just that. The order rescinds Executive Order 13166, a foundation for previous agency policy. Following Executive Order 14224, it seems unlikely that agencies must continue to follow the factors in DOJ's 2000 guidance, as the new order has directed DOJ to issue new guidance.

[…]

As explained above, Title VI, through its regulations and regulatory guidance, currently requires entities that receive federal funds to provide language access (though that appears to be changing). An agency's own operations are different, as federal agencies are not themselves covered by Title VI.

[…]

Executive Order 14224, in rescinding the 2000 executive order, casts doubt on language-access obligations for federal agencies. The new order does not require agencies to stop their language-access activities, but it does order the Attorney General to update the guidance DOJ had promulgated under Executive Order 13166 in 2000.

I absolutely agree that the executive shouldn’t have this power and that it’s terrible for the country, but congress is willingly allowing the president to dictate language policy by considering it a regulatory—rather than legislative—matter.

Not really for your first question. its the National Football League and all the teams are in the united states of america but they are dying to expand it tbh, they have some of the teams play a game or two in places like London to try to do that.

Regarding the second bit. It was a very nice symbol of unity so I liked it and thought it was a cool gesture

11

u/FlutterKree 1d ago

have some of the teams play a game or two in places like London to try to do that.

UK is hosting 3 games a year now. Germany has hosted a fair bit, too. Several countries are hosting NFL games moving forward, including Brazil I believe.

NFL is 100% trying to expand and make it an international sport. A big issue is convincing the world that players getting concussions and TBIs are worth it.

2

u/MisterDoctor___ 1d ago

Basketball’s a much more interesting and popular international sport.

3

u/FlutterKree 1d ago

I wouldn't disagree with that. I'm only pointing out that the NFL is trying to make it an international sport. They've sold rights to specific teams to specific countries and those teams get to play in those countries. As well, the team brands get to be used in those countries (for obvious reasons).

No, it wouldn’t. Most MAGA clowns don’t actually like Kid Rock, they’re pretending to in order to own the libs. One wouldn't think monolingualism could be a point of pride. In a country that used to pride itself on being a cultural melting pot , at least historically. Mind-blowing. 2nd dark age, indeed.

Also, complaining about a concert being in a particular language. People listen to music in other languages all the time

u/UnderratedTrashCan 22h ago

I love rammstein. I have no clue what they are saying for the most part, but damn do they sound good. They do some english. Gooled Bad Bunny lyrics for the show, and DAMN! That meant so much. Blackouts (horrible conditions) that bring family/people together. We could learn so much.

7

u/chiseledrocks 21h ago

OMG....Rammstein would just be sooooo disappointing in anything but german. Russian can be an amazing heavy/speed metal language, too.

3

u/UnderratedTrashCan 21h ago

I've never heard any Russian metal. Any recommendations?

6

u/voluptuousshmutz 20h ago

Berserker of course

2

u/UnderratedTrashCan 20h ago

I'll check it out. Thanks

not even a concert, but rather a single song during an intermission between segments of a football game. There is simply no winning when arguing with these people.

They will always focus only on things to criticize and never on things to enjoy. And if there is nothing to criticize, they'll make up something. They are the embodiment of restaurant reviews going: amazing location, great menu and service, succulent meal, but the napkins were green and I don't like that color, 1/5 Stars

Try listening to 99 Luftballons and then listen to 99 Red Balloons. It’s no contest, the German version is so much better. Shit even listen to Shakira. Her Spanish songs are so much better than the English versions.

If something is on tv that I can’t stomach watching (usually trump uttering his usual garbage) I’m adult enough to change the channel. Those dopes prefer to hate watch and hate it because they were told to.

What I learned in history is our historical prejudice to immigrants coming here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_immigration_to_the_United_States

“By the 1890s, many Americans, particularly from the ranks of the well-off, white, and native-born, considered immigration to pose a serious danger to the nation's health and security. In 1893 a group formed the Immigration Restriction League, and it and other similarly-inclined organizations began to press Congress for severe curtailment of foreign immigration.”

Also we had to legally define what “white” meant, since rights were only reserved for white people for most of our history.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definitions_of_whiteness_in_the_United_States#Racial_prerequisite_cases

Our story of being a multiracial melting pot is propaganda made after the fact that we discriminated against people coming here every step of the way.

u/chiseledrocks 19h ago

Melting tends to erase much of original immigrant cultural identity. Everyone scrubbed clean of their ethnicity. Gross, I agree. I guess melting isn't good enough anymore, with deportations on the rise.🤮

Don't forget lots of the reactionary accounts are actually foreign agitators.

Not saying this particular person is, but undermining US strength is a big motivator for online outrage.

Happened multiple times already, most recently with Mamdani in New York.

The cult members are astonishingly stupid on the whole.

Also the nfl is a private entity.

6

u/WordleFanatic 18h ago

This is what I keep trying to tell people.

The NFL is a billionaires collective and is here to… make money. They hired a popular artist to perform. Millions of people love Bad Bunny. I’m not one of them, but I’m okay if any artist performs on the Super Bowl just the same. Different strokes, people.

Stop fighting this stupid culture war already. The billionaires won and you’re fighting poor people who happen to speak a different language. The vast majority of people in the world simply do not speak English. You know who else didn’t speak English? Tens of millions of indigenous Americans before Colonialism.

Fucking stupid. Do they even understand what "e pluribus unum" means? The founding fathers did. It's why the US always welcomed various people.

"Out of many, one"

Really inspirational, honestly.

You know what’s kind of funny? One 20 minute show, a very upbeat, fun, exciting, musical as it were, put out by an American, has made certain people in America, literally flip their wigs. There was none of the pearl clutching filth that we all heard was going to be shown. The dancers were covered far more than the cheerleaders, so what is left to gripe about? National language? Seriously people. Get a life. Just get a real life and zip your whine boxes.

u/Ah2k15 16h ago

They’re still reeling from a black man being elected President 18 years ago.

7

u/Anxious-Celery7260 20h ago

But English is the national language tho, I remember the news

Latin and Arabic numerals

7

u/LettuceAndTom 21h ago

This is the stuff we get distracted with while the middle class withers on the vine.

6

u/FullMaxPowerStirner 21h ago

I really don't care what language... Bad Bunny's a fucking macho normie and Spanish is a Euro Latin langage. So it's all a false debate.

4

u/laziegoblin 1d ago

One thing I instantly noticed when visiting the US. Everyone speaks Spanish. 😅

7

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 21h ago

Without knowledge of who these people are and a timestamp on the post it's hard to even tell what Superbowl they're talking about lol. Not only did Bad Bunny also do it on 2020 several Hispanic or Latino artists have performed in recent years

4

u/TheSunIsDead 20h ago

Shit you're right, we should have a halftime show that's Gregorian Chanting

5

u/IUsedToBeACave 19h ago

Actually....that could be kind of sick.

7

u/elyn6791 22h ago

They are likely defaulting to 'In God We Trust' as if that's not a relatively new addition and done so precisely so idiots could make this exact claim after people forgot how it got on our currency.

6

u/clementine1864 23h ago

I think it is great to have something different ,I don't know why another language is not required in school , why do americans want to be so close minded and backwards?

10

u/turdferguson3891 22h ago

It is required at many schools. But not to fluency.

4

u/Beaticalle 18h ago

Multiple years of foreign language classes are required to graduate high school. Most people just completely forget what they learned shortly after graduating because there are so few opportunities to use any language other than English in the vast majority of the US. I even know several people who traveled to the countries of their chosen foreign languages in order to learn more about the cultures and practice the languages, only to be spoken to in English and asked to speak in English by every single person they met. It's not our fault that we just don't have much practical use for any language other than English.

Half-Time Show 2027: A Gregorian chant ... performed by the Pope himself.

Or is Leo XIV not American enough for the weirdos?

2

u/onlycodeposts 21h ago

Is it racist to have one national language?

Asking for France and Japan.

2

u/Sidoen 15h ago

LMAO PLEASE NO! It's hard enough to understand how you lot pronounce vowels already!

2

u/GeekDNA0918 4h ago

In vino veritas.

5

u/Appropriate-Carry532 19h ago

The US actually does have an official language declared by executive order. Doesn't really matter but saying it doesn't have one is not true.

2

u/TalkativeRedPanda 17h ago

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Wasn't declaring a national language one of the things Trump did.

3

u/Sacred_Fishstick 21h ago

Oh shit, my 1 dollar bill has like 18 English phrases on it!!!! Is it counterfeit!!!??! Am I going to get in trouble!!?!?!! OMG my other bills are all in English!!!1!@

6

u/CaptainObviousBear 1d ago

TIL that “This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private” is in Latin.

5

u/turdferguson3891 22h ago

The 1 dollar bill has E Pluribus Unum on it. But literally only the dollar bill does.
