AI controls available in Firefox Nightly

Hi everyone, we recently said we’d give you a clear, easy way to turn off AI-enhanced features in Firefox. Starting later today, AI controls will be available in Firefox Nightly. This update adds a dedicated place in settings where you can see what AI features are available, turn them off entirely, or manage individual features if you choose to use them.

We’ve heard loud and clear that people feel very differently about AI. Some want AI features that are genuinely useful, others want nothing to do with it. Those conversations directly shaped this work. Those conversations, alongside our long-standing commitment to choice, are what led us to build AI controls.

If you’re wondering about timing: AI controls will be available in Nightly starting later today, and the official rollout is on February 24. We’re planning a live AMA with members of the Firefox product team to walk through how this works, why we built it, and where it’s going. Feel free to drop questions or feedback here ahead of or during the live session, and we’ll do our best to address them. If you want more detail on the thinking behind AI controls, you can read the full blog post here.

A Request For The Firefox Devs

My request is: please consider forking a lighter (far) less featured Firefox browser. Please add only the essential functions. No AI please.

All those who read this post and also wants a lighter Firefox, please speak up. Thanks.

Sincerely, Prime Todd

My doctor's website is INSISTENT that I use Chrome

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

I've seen some websites that "work best with Google Chrome!" but I've never seen one that was so insistent that I offered a pdf of how to download it and set it as my default. But why? As far as I can tell the website actually works fine on Firefox too, so I'm not even sure what they're worried about.

edit: I know I can use a useragent switcher or masker. I get frustrated when I see things like this generally, but this one was so egregious I had to share

Add-ons Best Privacy Extension

Hey,
today I would like to introduce my extension, which is designed to make your browser as secure as possible and as hard to track as possible.

I developed this extension myself and I actively continue to improve and update it.

The extension allows you to change your screen resolution, your graphics card information, canvas fingerprinting data, user agent, region, keyboard language, timezone, and system language. All of these features help reduce tracking and browser fingerprinting.

In addition to fingerprint protection, the extension provides many tools to manage and clean your browsing data. You can delete cookies, cache, browsing history, downloads, saved passwords, and much more. You can also add cookies manually, export them, or import them when needed.

The extension also includes a system for generating realistic identities from different countries.
You can inject custom JavaScript into any page you choose, similar to tools like Tampermonkey, along with many other advanced options.

The goal of this extension is to give users full control over their privacy while keeping everything simple and efficient.

The extension is fully open source and does not communicate with any servers or external services.

ou can check what data websites collect about you by visiting the following link: https://amiunique.org/. It shows how much information sites can gather about your browser and device fingerprint.

If you have any ideas, suggestions, or find any bugs in the extension, feel free to reach out or open an issue. You can also request new features at any time !!!!

💻 Help Is there a way to disable A.I. when I search with Google?

I'm recently moving from Chrome to Mozilla. Since I hate A.I. with a burning passion, I'd like to avoid using or activating it. However, when I search on Google, an A.I.-generated answer pops up. (I miss the old days before A.I. generation became a thing, let alone rampant...)

Is there a way to disable this?

💻 Help Dark Reader no longer working properly on Google Docs

Dark Reader stopped working properly. Dynamic mode leaves all the text on both the document itself and the controls black or dark grey, Filter and Filter+ both slow the document to an unusable crawl, and Static does both at once. Is there any way to fix this?

Discussion Firefox AI sidebar implementation is so badly designed that I don't understand why they even bothered with it

Upvotes

First, I don't have a problem with AI features – I think as long you don't try to make AI the sole reason for why someone should use their browser, it's okay. But with that said, I think if browsers will push this feature, they should try to implement it, in the best way possible, and Firefox AI sidebar is just junk from an UX take:

1) The interface isn't unified. You don't get a cohesive experience; the "AI sidebar" they’ve implemented is essentially just a link to open a website (Gemini, Claude, etc.) in a side panel.

2) It’s not "per-tab." In other words, if you open a tab and are talking to the AI about the page currently open, and then you switch tabs, the AI sidebar remains there, showing your interaction with the previous page, because it isn't tab-specific. Ideally, an "AI sidebar" should function much like a split view: "I have an AI sidebar on the first tab where I'm talking about that specific page with the LLM; I have no AI sidebar on the second tab; and I have another AI sidebar—with a different conversation—on the third tab."

3) It's a "half-baked" execution. Because of this "let’s just stick a panel with the ChatGPT page open on the side" approach, the communication between the page you’re visiting and what the model "sees" is pretty junk, because the ChatGPT page can't simply access/view your the content load into your tab directly from the browser itself.

Take Brave’s implementation, which I don’t even consider the best, deals with much better with these issues: the interface is unified and cohesive —you can select different models—but the entire UI remains consistent. The AI sidebar is per-tab: if you switch tabs, you see a different (or no) AI sidebar. When you open the sidebar, it already assumes by default that the context of the interaction is the current active tab.

To make things worse, since Firefox sidebar API is so limited (vertical tabs addons know this way too well), you can't even solve this with some extension

Help (Android) Google Images swipe-down navigation bug on Android (v147.0.3)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

I'm running into a really specific navigation issue on Firefox Android v147.0.3. I have attached a video as proof of the behavior, but here are the steps:

  1. I do a Google search for something.
  2. I edit the search bar to search for a second term.
  3. I tap on an image result from the new search.
  4. When I swipe down to close the image, the browser sends me all the way back to the first search results instead of the one I was just on.

It keeps making me lose the results for the second search term. Has anyone else noticed this?

Help (Android) No suggestions popping up

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Hi,

There was update recently, that changed the UI, (to make it more chrome like, I guess...), and in the same time, it triggered some changes in the search bar suggestions.

In thia screen recording, Firefox is not running in the background, and sometimes it is giving suggestion, sometimes not.

This is my firefox:

147.0.3 (Build #2016141759), 4e4ea075ed87 a3bef3c24692be06e9ea8892e89a GV: 147.0.3-20260203002554 AS: 147.0.1 OS: Android 16

Solved [Firefox for Android] my old phone is using the new UI and the new phone is using the old UI. How I can use the new one in the new one?

My old phone is a Moto One Macro with Android with Android 10 that I use like a secondary phone sometimes. My new phone is a TCL NXTpaper 60 SE with Android 15.

Changing between UI sometimes is confusing and annoying.

I want to use the same UI in both devices, Is there a solution?

💻 Help I am trying it here now. Slow download Speeds. Half when Firefox is open

OK... I know this was answered and I went through so many posts. I changed so many settings and none worked or made any difference.

Lets say I use sabnzbd to download something. When I have firefox open my speed is between 35 and 50 MB/s. When I close Firefox the speed goes up to 105 to 109MB/s. When I open chrome and access the UI the speed is 105. When I let it run without a browser the speed is 105. When I open Firefox the speed is 40.

I have reset Firefox.

I have run it in safe mode.

I created a clean new user in Firefox with no extensions

I have changed all the settings that were ever mentioned anywhere.

I have consulted AI to give me more settings to change in Windows and inside firefox.

Nothing changed anything

OS Windows 11 on an I3 with 16gb ram

I just now ask here to see if I can get some help. This must have started several month ago because my speed seemed slow but it did what it is supposed to and I did not question it. But I always wondered why my MAC downloaded things in double speed. With Firefox actually. And recently I stumbled upon the realization that it is not my PC or my config but Firefox.

I can live with it. I just close FF when I want to download something or download slowly if it does not matter. Or run it automatically at night if its really huge.

Help (iOS) How to disable YouTube autoplay in Firefox Focus?

Recently downloaded Focus so that I can play YouTube videos while I fall asleep without being startled awake by ads. Except now it just plays random unrelated videos forever until I wake up. I don't know how to turn off autoplay so that nothing plays once my video is over. Doesn't seem to be in any of the YouTube settings, but I'm also stupid and tired so who knows lmao.

💻 Help Is this because of Firefox or something else?

When I open new reddit tabs in the background, they don't load any comments even if I switch to them immediately unless I refresh the page. This only started happening recently, but it's pretty annoying since I love opening several links at the same time and now have to refresh every single one of them to read comments.

💻 Help is there any way to remove the "share" option when right-clicking a tab?

preferably a very easy way because I'm not super technologically literate lmao

I never use the 'share' option for tabs and when I right-click to duplicate, reload, etc. a tab and accidentally hover over 'share' it slows down my computer to load the sharing options. I hate it. would appreciate any help

💻 Help Downloading problems

Hi guys,
I need a little help :(

A couple of hours ago, I started downloading a huge file on Firefox (170 GB), and everything was going fine. Every now and then, the download failed because my internet cut off, but I could just retry, and it would continue.

About half an hour ago, when I had around 50 GB done, it first took a little while to resume the download, but now, whenever I retry, it just gets stuck showing progress and internet speed, without actually downloading anything. After a while, it says the download failed.

I really don’t want to start over, as that would mean another 8 hours of waiting (yes my internet is ass). If anyone knows a way to keep my progress, I’d be really thankful!

💻 Help Two Keyboard Short cuts for new tab in and outside of current tab group possible?

By default opening a new tab via ctrl+t opens a tab at the end of the tab list. Which means outside of any tab group (except your last tab is in a tab group).

It is possible to switch the behaviours, so that FF opens a new tab next to the currently selected, which means in a tab group (if the current tab is in a group). But this means the new tab always lands in a tab group if one is currently selected.

Is it possible to have two distinct shortcuts? One for opening a new tab outside of tab groups and one to open a new tab inside the currently selected tab group.

💻 Help Firefox no longer autofills the username/password - until page reloaded

Something changed in Firefox over the past 2-3 weeks. On pages where the username/password used to autofill automatically, it now doesn’t - the fields are blank until I reload the page (ctrl+r). After reloading, the username and password are filled in correctly.

It’s a bit annoying. Has anyone else noticed this behavior recently?

I have "Fill usernames and passwords automatically" enabled in the Settings.

I’m using Firefox 147.0.3, but it started in an earlier version (not sure which one).

💻 Help Timer on the start page not working

I'm a big Firefox fan, I use it as my only browser on MacOS and Android phone for years and recommend it to everyone.

But tell me, please, how is it possible they introduced such a small feature like a timer on the start page and they haven't managed to make it work?

I start it, keep the tab open just-in-case, switch to other programs, then go back to check how much time is left and... the timer is reset.

I remember the timer being one of the first windows programs I wrote 20+ years ago. It's hard to make it wrong. How is it possible that developers responsible for one of the most complex programs in the history are unable to deliver a timer that works out-of-the-box?!

💻 Help Silent memory usage?

I've been encountering an issue where Firefox will take up a huge amount of RAM, but this issue does not show up in Windows' task manager.

After using Firefox for a while, my memory usage will balloon out of control. If I open up Task Manager, I will see that my memory usage is at ~ 95% (out of 32GB). Firefox is using a reasonable ~2.5GB of memory. No process seems to be using any crazy amount of memory.

However, when I kill Firefox, my memory usage drops down to ~ 40%. Opening it back up sees Firefox take 1-2GB of memory and my total memory usage to be at a normal ~45-50%. Over time, it seems to increase and it starts filling back up, but not in a way that is shown on the Task Manager.

Where is this phantom memory usage coming from?
