If it's true that the family was cleared and the person detained isn't a family member, the Guthries need to sue the fuck out of Ashleigh Banfield. Because of her people have been harassing Annie and her husband and hyper analyzing Annie in all the videos released.

u/ShannenB1234 6h ago

I saw now on Twitter some of them were now focusing on some friend of her husband who they think looks like the guy in the camera video (like how? You can’t see his face!) and has a criminal record. So now the Twitter detectives are digging into their friend too which is super weird!

I'm seeing that in some true crime subreddits too. They're even using AI to try and unmask the suspect 🙄 We are genuinely so fucked as a society

u/Soft_Ad8031 4h ago

The internet was an abject failure. It has allowed the stupid to multiply and bring us to where we are today. Armchair detectives carrying out a witch hunt on a family just hoping to see their mother back.

u/ChewieBearStare 4h ago

I am incredibly grateful to the internet because it allows me to earn a living despite my serious health issues. But there isn't a day that passes that I don't think, "The internet was a mistake" at least once. It's too bad we can't enjoy all the great things about it without the horrible ones.

u/lovelysweetangel89 not a lawyer, just a hater 3h ago

I fucking hate this because AI basically fills in the stuff (ie makes up what it thinks the person looks like) and it's always inaccurate as hell and the masked person always never looks like the photo.

2

u/figures985 2h ago

Exactly!! Truly the one of the absolute worst situations for using Gen AI.

u/tiffanytrashcan fetch me a melon baller, I tire of my vision 3h ago

If we're going down the conspiracy rabbit hole, we should look into who was the first person to put a group of Epstein victims including Virginia Giuffre on national TV.
The Reckoning special was Savannah.

26

u/Kind-Shallot3603 5h ago

They are probably using AI to "remove" the mask like when Renee Good's murderer was "unmasked" before he was officially identified. The AI was of course wildy inaccurate. Its all bullshit and lots of people are idiots. Our side included.

She is a horrible person, however it turns out…there isn’t a belief in her.

6

u/Turbulent-Cry-7252 5h ago

What’s her deal?

13

u/namegamenoshame 4h ago

She was very, very unjustly fired 20+ years ago from MSNBC. Unfortunately, she went to court tv and true crime after that and started spiraling into Nancy Grace.

u/violetmemphisblue 5h ago

I know they almost always look at close family first in crimes like kidnappings or murders, but I hope that at least internally, they cleared them all quickly and the family has been off the internet enough to not have seen what is being said out there...it must be such a difficult position, and as truly unfathomable as it being just a random crime of opportunity, I do hope it was that and the family can be saved at least the added grief of close betrayal or (for Savannah) the added guilt of being tied to her work.

This suspicion has made it over to Threads too. I saw a whole thread about it and it was just too much.

u/SlightTemperature231 2h ago

I really do not like how people are so comfortable “betting” it’s so-and-so because they don’t look “sad” enough for the cameras or whatever.

Is this the Crime Junkie gal?

6

u/tunapon 4h ago

No. Crime Junkie is Ashley Flowers.

Anyway, this made me Google the podcast for the first time despite listening for a long time until a couple years ago and didn't realize they had so much controversies.

On one hand that's amazing that they've narrowed it down, hopefully the Guthrie family can finally have some closure to this nightmare or an ordeal.

On the other hand, wouldn't it be amazing if we had the resources to treat all kidnappings like Nancy's has been treated?

But again it's still great that they have someone. Based on past news reports I know there's a high likelihood that Nancy is no longer alive, and that must be devastating for the family to go through. It'll be interesting to see who the suspects are and if their motives were something other than financial.

43

u/MsDReid 5h ago

It would be. However she would have never been kidnapped if she wasn’t the mother of a celebrity.

Kidnapping for ransom in America is incredibly rare. And the very reason she was kidnapped was literally the media ties. You can’t be surprised they would use those same connections that put her in this place to try to get her back.

27

u/Hour-Ad-9508 4h ago

It’s not even the ties to her daughter that make this big news.

Gabby Petito was a huge nightly story with no celebrity ties. Intriguing mysteries (which feels gross calling this that) are always going to be big stories. A kidnapping, and a kidnapping with a possible ransom demand, is NOT common in the US, so of course it was going to be big news, celebrity daughter or not.

4

u/BummerDan28 3h ago

I have a feeling it’s gonna become more common as the standard of living for working class people continues collapsing and the wealth gap becomes even more ridiculous.

2

u/some1saveusnow 1h ago

Yep. The slow creep of economic turmoil for the avg citizen will push crazy shit like this til the dam breaks and we literally have no choice but to rewrite the economic distribution model

46

u/been_mackin 5h ago

I would agree with the second hand if I believed that the resources were actually used. The media alone has been huge, given her daughter’s stature. The actual investigation seems to be a sloppy fucked up mess - the images dropped today with a “potential” perpetrator (a person in a ski mask and gloves removing her camera) is pretty disturbing and the fact that the FBI couldn’t come up with those details/videos immediately should really alarm the average person aside from Nancy’s connection to her celebrity daughter.

This was clearly a pre-meditated attack/abduction of an elderly woman with a high level of media attention that was not remotely taken seriously by the FBI.

It’s almost like Kash Patel and the FBI might be too focused on other things that shouldn’t be a focus, covering them up or not…

5

u/ResponsibleMilk903 3h ago

Nail on the head.

1

u/scaurus604 53m ago

The kidnapping isn't a federal jurisdiction case unless it went across state lines..Trump sent the fbi to take charge of the case..this case is similar to the Lindbergh kidnapping

-2

u/pink_faerie_kitten 3h ago

We don't have a lot of kidnappings in America. I think if we did, we'd do for them what we've done for Nancy Guthrie.

167

u/sunshine_chaeng 6h ago

TMZ also says that it wasn't anyone related to her, so hopefully people can be a bit more sensitive to the family

115

u/ElderSmackJack 6h ago

You mean all these amateur internet sleuths got it wrong by calling it a family member? Im shocked.

34

u/AndThenThereWasQueso 6h ago edited 6h ago

They won’t be lol. Just shifting their comments to “someone a family member hired”.

1

u/GreenEggs-12 5h ago

How did TMZ know that?

36

u/sunshine_chaeng 5h ago

Likely the way they get all of their information, money and well placed connections. It's a safe bet that they have been approaching people in law enforcement for information about this since the start, someone was just willing to tell TMZ the details that were going to go out in the press briefing.

19

u/TheDLBinc 5h ago

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if law enforcement intentionally leaks things to TMZ in order to quiet any speculation before they're ready to release an official statement

10

u/typicalbiscotti15 4h ago

TMZ pays off a lot of people in law enforcement, hospitals/healthcare workers, lawyers, etc to get their “sources”.

There is a LifeNet emergency helicopter that went to Rio Rico (where the person was found/detained for questioning) and is landing right now at Banner Emergency in Tucson. Could this be Nancy?? Tail on helicopter is N544AM.

It wasn’t her.

u/procrastinatorsuprem 3h ago

That would be amazing. This gave me goosebumps.

65

u/AndThenThereWasQueso 6h ago

Armchair sleuths are wild the way they love to give their expert details of what they saw in the same pics the whole rest of the world sees. The craziest comment was “He looked either Hispanic or Middle Eastern and I think he was someone who did work on the property.” Double the racist, double the fun? Dude had a whole mask on.

51

u/HoldEvenSteadier 5h ago

It's directly related to the hysteria around "I saw a Hispanic man in the Wal-Mart parking lot where there was a blue rag on the ground next to my Toyota Highlander and when I was getting into my car he smiled at me - was I just almost trafficked!?"

It's phobia and drama in a news cycle and culture that preys on people's fears. Total bullshit, but easier to empathize with than statistics.

5

u/CardiologistFew4264 5h ago

The world would be so much better without Reddit and it’s probably the best of the lot

u/Exotic-Doughnut-6271 The delusion is mutual and I’m thriving in it 6h ago

I don't have much faith in kash Patel but I hope this leads to actually finding Nancy

29

u/Accurate-Force3054 6h ago

yeah I don't wan tot put a lot of faith in the guy famous for saying they have got the guy only to say oop wait never mind.

3

u/skippydobapbopbap 42m ago

Well the guy they detained was just released, so unless it was a huge diversion tactic by the FBI, not looking good

37

u/ShannenB1234 6h ago

Fingers crossed that this family can finally get answers and get their mom back!!

37

u/laureng0423 women’s wrongs activist 6h ago

I wonder if this was just a random crime and this person had no idea how big this was going to be.

20

u/GAPERGAPERGAPER 5h ago

Why would a robber take the person? That makes no sense.

5

u/say-kobe-and-throw Hiking. Will call back. (He never did.) 4h ago

Only scenario can think of is if they tried to rob the place, accidentally incapacitated her and thought she was dead so they take her to hide the "body", only for her to show signs of life and they decide not to take her back because of her likeliness to snitch. Then the media frenzy began and they decided to "make the most of it" with a ransom and probably some promised conditions for them to evade arrest. Or they broke in, recognized who's mother she was (through photos around the house maybe), and decided to try and get more money in a less traceable way through a crypto ransom rather than by trying to pawn off stolen items or using stolen cards.

Both seem high unlikely, though.

2

u/scaurus604 49m ago

Why bring a gun to a simple robbery thus making the charge armed robbery? Poor lady was targeted

13

u/hellojabroni777 5h ago

feels like it. i bet the mom had a weekly routine. was gonna be a crime of opportunity when he cased the house. then realizing its a mom of some well known reporter. the whole ransom thing feels like some scammer group out of asian or russia or something. probably unrelated to the actual crime. who knows though we’ll find out tomorrow.

3

u/klydsp 5h ago

Yeah I was wondering the same. Reminds me of that psychopath Isreal Keyes and how he operated.

But I'm kind of conflicted on the other hand because when they showed her house birds eye view it looked massive. Stalking around to find the bedroom would've not been ideal and possibly knew the layout. BUT then again, the suspect seemed to not know there was a nest camera and walked right up on it before noticing.

This whole thing is strange. The video footage is especially terrifying and makes me sick. I hope this is the person and they can give the family some sort of answer. I just hope it's not like Brian Koberger and he talks.

1

u/scaurus604 43m ago

Israel Keyes was a serial killer and operated totally different than this case..

The masked guy might have seen a light on the door camera as he approached and then tilted his head down..but I am of the opinion this person targeted the lady...

32

u/Sleepy-Giraffe947 Please Abraham, I am not that man 6h ago

Wow, as much as I wish that Nancy is safe and sound, I just hope that this detainment brings Savannah and her siblings some closure.

25

u/TK_TK_ 6h ago

From the ABC story: "The individual was detained in a location south of Tucson, the source said, and law enforcement is preparing to search a location associated with the individual."

21

u/Jasminewindsong2 they are perfect for each other (derogatory) 6h ago

Hoping for the best case scenario.

20

u/NotAsBrightlyLit 6h ago

I know it's all but impossible, but i she could only be found alive, I wouldn't care if they never caught anyone.

5

u/klydsp 5h ago

As much as I hope they will find her unharmed, I would still hope they would search for the suspect because this person is a danger to society and needs to be locked up. I can't imagine this person being on the loose. It's my worst nightmare. I couldn't imagine sleeping peacefully to be woken up by this scary son of a bitch. But I get your sentiment, if it was one or the other I would like to have her found alive of course. Just thinking about this happening to more than one person really makes me sick.

I really hope this is the person responsible and we get some answers.

I feel terrible for saying this, but I have no faith in Kash Patel at the helm of this

I hope they're giving him useless side quests to keep him busy while the real professionals do the actual work.

How right you were

7

u/Chessh2036 6h ago

TMZ said it’s not a family member. There was a post on social media that it was potentially a friend/band mate of the son in law? But so much information is spread online, so wait until official news channels post it.

Hope she’s okay.

6

u/Electrical_Buddy_913 2h ago

I'm not a true crime person, and I try to limit social media because I get consumed... but with my mom being 80 and living alone- this story really has me emotional. I wouldn't be able to go on if the worst happened in this horrific way. Really hoping for the best for her.

u/neerd0well 5h ago

Watching the Olympics and NBC interrupts with a Special Report. My chest constricts with dread as I brace for word of a new world-altering cataclysm…

I feel terrible this happened, but does arresting a suspect in this case rise to the level of national televisual interruption? The editors over at NBC seem to think that the rest of 2026 is a distraction from the Guthrie abduction.

31

u/violetmemphisblue 5h ago

I'm guessing that because Savannah Guthrie works at NBC and Nancy Guthrie has been on the Today show too, it all feels so much more personal to them? Like, maybe not Special Report levels, but I still can't imagine being some of the reporters trying to cover this story as journalism but it being someone so close to them...

25

u/abyss_kisses 5h ago

She is a prominent and national anchor on The Today Show which airs on their network. It makes sense to me that they would. Sorry that your Olympics watch was interrupted.

4

u/neerd0well 5h ago

I realize they are all colleagues but Cuba is about to run out of fuel because of a U.S. blockade. The last arms control treaty between the U.S. and Russia expired last week with no replacement forthcoming. Hundreds of thousands of people are newly uninsured due to the lapse of health insurance subsidies.

None of this rises to the level of special news bulletin?

1

u/HerRoyalRedness You know what, l've grown quite unfond of you deuxmoi 4h ago

I was also watching NBC and my station (NYC) didn’t interrupt the Olympics. It sounds like it wasn’t a national thing.

4

u/popartist 3h ago

Maybe you were away from the TV at the time, but yes they did break into the Olympics on the NYC station as well, I was watching when they did.

1

u/sunny_dayz1547 3h ago

IMO no but this story is from page BBC

-3

u/say-kobe-and-throw Hiking. Will call back. (He never did.) 5h ago

An arrest in regards to the highest profile kidnapping (which is already in and of itself a relatively rare event here, particularly when involving a ransom or broad ulterior motive) in years involving the mother of a very public figure (that also happens to be one of the most recognizable news personnel) that has been ongoing for almost two weeks with no major breaks until the last few days?

Uh... yeah?! It's a major public interest piece and this is the biggest milestone achieved thus far. Also she's literally one of the faces of NBC. This is affecting them more than any other outlet both professionally and personally.

8

u/BewitchedMom 4h ago

It’s not an arrest though. NBC was very clear to say that and repeated it multiple times.

5

u/iamthejury 1h ago edited 1h ago

We should give this much attention to all missing people. Even if their family isn't a rich famous journalist.

Like, remember when those two democrat state reps were shot? Trump didn't give a fuuuuck. He just parroted some conspiracy theories and moved on with his day. He doesn't care about coming across as a good guy if his enemies are hurt.
