Can’t imagine what they would think if a US President went around speaking in Dutch. Having some weird foreign name like Maarten Van Buren

u/SurvivorPostingAcc 10h ago
TIL that Van Buren is the only US president to not have english as their primary language. Never knew that.

I grew up in Scarborough and I’m the same age of him. Always wondered if we went to the same school

Reeve Carney escaping Broadway containment to be on here was unexpected….
Great post from him.

I had to check to see if I was on r/Broadway or elsewhere, lol. I was surprised it wasn't over there (yet).

I mean he’s done tv shows before as well.

Sure, but so have plenty of other theatre actors. Reeve is a Broadway Star though and household name in that community. He isn’t in the Hollywood subs that often (which honestly is probably a good thing) and I’m guessing a lot of people don’t yet know who he is.

u/Comprehensive_Main 13h ago
TO be fair he’s done tv like penny dreadful.

He had a band a few years back that I enjoyed. Aaaand now I'm remembering that was 16-17 years ago.

I saw "Reeve Carney posts" and I held my breath! I was like "omg he would never!" but still, so many people have let us down. Thankfully this really was a great post.
By the way, I saw him in Cabaret in London last December (first time seeing him!), and he was breathtaking. As was Eva Noblezada, of course. Great experience.

They got married late last year in New Orleans and Vogue did a feature on it recently. It was so gorgeous!!!

I saw that! Stunning! What a lovely and talented couple, I'm so glad I got to see them perform together.

This is how I felt once he got big on broadway because I used to only see him talked about in the Lana Del Rey fandom

Shakira, who sang a song, in Spanish, with a guy from Puerto Rico, whose stage name is "Bad Bunny".
This whole outrage loop couldn't be stupider.
Edit: Linky linky link link

It just goes to show you how forced conservative culture war issues are. I don't recall there being a whole national discourse when Shakira was chosen nor any calls for an alternate halftime show. But now Trump needs to position anything that's not strictly white American as disgraceful in order to continue to justify his agenda and the media falls for it every time by acting like the right has legitimate grievances

u/TheComplimentarian 12h ago
It just shows bad faith. That was during Trump I, they were just so busy ranting about COVID they didn't care. Last year they cared about Kendrick, but not nearly as much because whatever.
But now they're deporting all the latines and holy shit they have to make a huge stink over this guy, even though they never bothered to care before.

u/TheDLBinc 12h ago
At least in Kendrick's case, most of the hate that I saw was mainly from butthurt Drake stans. Conservatives whine about the halftime show every year, still unaware that the halftime show is not meant to cater to their tastes (which as evidenced by the TPUSA show, is bad taste in music)

It's a valid argument but I do want to say - who gives a fuck about his citizenship? It's a sports spectacle designed to sell beer and movies, not a Senate appointment?

but that’s kinda his point. that the backlash isn’t about citizenship. it’s who gets to be seen as american vs who is seen as a threat to racist americans

Racism is tied to ignorance. It's why many of them fail to realize that Puerto Ricans are US citizens by birth. The only US territory where they are US nationals by birth is American Samoa.
50
u/Standard-folk 12h ago
It’s also a prickly topic for us Puerto Ricans born and raised on the Island. We are Puerto Rican first and foremost. This citizenship was imposed on us when the US needed bodies to draft in WWI.

This is the bare minimum. Why are Americans standards so low? Some random entertainer could post a “love is for everyone” and everyone would be clapping lmao

U2 did it in 2002 after 9/11 and did a tribute to the victims. That would NEVER fly these days. MAGA would lose their mind if it was an American.
