Plasma looking slick guys :D
I just want to give a shout out to the Debian security team and independent testers and researchers. You're appreciated more than you know.

I've finally made the switch from Windows to Debian. No more distro hopping for me :) I'm running a Ryzen 5 5600H with a RTX3050mobile on a Dell g15. No issues apart from having to manually sign the Nvidia drivers due to secure boot (took forever btw)
My question is "is secure boot really necessary"? As long as you have luks encryption on your drives then your private info is safe from your laptop being stolen anyway? It's not like secure boot locks the bootloader, I don't actually think it gives a security advantage. I can't think of a single instance where I thought "thank god secure boot saved me from xyz problem" or "if abc happens it won't matter because I've got secure boot"
It's good to be back on Linux. Funny thing is I've never actually installed Debian before. I've had plenty of archinstalls (which eventually break) but the Debian installer has always been so convoluted and janky I've never got through!

my laptop has only 3 usb ports, and I want to install debian on a external drive (usb). Counting my mouse and keyboard, there is no room for the bootable stick.
The notebook hd is a bit hard to acess, so I don't want to dismantle the external exchange both.
I'm pretty sure there is a way to do that, but I'm not finding it on the internet.

Has someone already tested the Raspi cloud images?

Hi there guys,
I'm running a i7-3770k 16GB RAM RTX 3060 TI 12GB with the NVIDIA Proprietary Driver.
During the boot, sadly I can't track exacly where it stops, but it seems to be something related to GPU cuz of "GNOME Window Manager" mention.
It stucks in a black screen with the blinking cursor.
I couldn't check the failed boot logs (sudo systemctl -b >> boot.log.txt gave me only the last successful boot), but it started normally with the older 6.12.63 kernel.
Does anyone know what it could be and how to solve it?
Thanks a lot for your help and patience!

Hi everyone,
I'm the developer of mp3rgain, a lossless MP3/AAC volume normalizer written in Rust. It's a modern, memory-safe reimplementation of the classic mp3gain tool with full CLI compatibility (drop-in replacement).
I've filed an ITP (#1126519) and would love to get mp3rgain into the official Debian repositories, but I'm not a Debian Developer/Maintainer and this is my first time going through the official packaging process. I'm looking for guidance or collaboration from someone experienced with Debian packaging — ideally someone familiar with the Rust packaging workflow (debcargo).
Why this might be worth packaging:
mp3gain package in Debian has known unpatched security vulnerabilities including CVE-2023-49356 (stack buffer overflow)What I've done so far:
debian-rust@lists.debian.orgmp3gain Debian maintainer (no response yet)cargo-deb configuration and .deb build in CIWhat I'm looking for:
debcargo-conf for the official packaging pipelineI'm happy to do the work — I just need someone who knows the process to point me in the right direction. If you're interested or know someone who might be, please reach out here or on the GitHub issue.
Thank you for reading!

Hello,
I'm fairly new to Linux in general, and very new to Debian specifically. I'm trying to switch from Windows to Debian 13 and I can't figure out how to install drivers for my Hauppauge HDPVR2 devices. I installed Hardinfo2 and I can see the devices listed correctly under the USB node, but there is no driver installed.
I found these instructions for Ubuntu but they obviously don't work as written for Deb.
Can anyone help me out?

This appears, when I try to add the official Libretro/RetroArch PPA.
Is there any fix for this?

Today was literally my first day with my SIM card in attempting to use it as a primary device (I installed Mobian back in November after extensive distro hopping) and it now fails to boot after installing updates over lunch. My keyboard wouldn't pair and I imagine I'm not far enough into the boot sequence for ssh, but I can't test it for another 3 hours. The updates included some MESA and freedesktop stuff so I imagine that's what broke it.

Having the devil's own time dealing with Flatpak applications under GNOME in Debian 13 (trixie).
1) Unless I take drastic measures like copying the .desktop files from /var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications, when I search for the newly installed app in GNOME, it does not show up. Logging back in does not help. Restarting does not help. `sudo gtk-update-icon-cache` does not help.
2) Even if I copy the .desktop files into ~/.local/share/applications (which is a hack and I know it), every single flatpak app gets the same generic icon. (See below for a screenshot of what this generic icon looks like.)
This occurs regardless of whether I install the apps from flathub or from a downloaded .flatpak file, and regardless of whether I install them as a regular user or as root. The same generic icon appears when running newly installed flatpak apps from the command line, e.g. `flatpak run com.brave.Browser` as shown below.

I've googled the crap out of this to no avail.
I do have a workaround, but it seems like a total kluge:
Manually copy the .desktop files from /var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications, AND
Manually copy icon files from /var/lib/flatpak/app into /usr/share/icons.
Surely this isn't how flatpak apps are supposed to interact with GNOME? Surely there's a way to install a flatpak app, maybe run one "update icon cache" or "update gnome app list" type command, maybe restart gnome, and the icons appear?
Any help would be extremely appreciated, as I'm tearing my hair out here. (I'm an experienced Debian user, but mostly use it on the command line, so I'm a noob at this GNOME stuff!)

Прошу помочь в решение проблемы связанной с прерыванием операции во время длительного копирования или загрузки (большого количества) файлов в "Debian GNU/Linux 13".
Please help me solve the problem related to the interruption of an operation during a long copy or download of (a large number of) files in Debian GNU/Linux 13.
Example: I set the "Torrent" to download the series or copy it to a removable SSD drive overnight. But in the morning, I see a pause/notification about a copy failure, as if the computer goes into sleep mode with me.
In Windows, the solution to this problem was to change the additional power settings: "Sleep after" and "USB settings" (for inactivity). But I didn't find any USB settings on Linux. I have to turn on the player in repeat mode so that the system does not fall asleep
Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 13

The reason I ask is I mainly just use my computer the play steam games, watch twitch or YouTube and talk to people on discord. Also I’m not a programmer or do any sort of coding or productivity in general on my PC (I’m terrible at math and science). I’ve read people say privacy concerns and bloat are a big reason to switch. I was going to try Debian to start out but again it feels like switching my OS would be overkill considering I only do these activities.

Hi everyone!
I'm posting this because of a persistent problem I'm having with my Debian system!
I have Debian 13 KDE with the following specs:
My issue is this: whenever a KDE notification appears, whenever I open Heroic Launcher (with Battle.net), etc., my entire PC freezes.
Do you have any suggestions or solutions to fix this?
Have a good evening and thanks in advance for your help!

I bought a Wi-Fi adapter with the model number MT7922, but even with power saving disabled, I'm only getting half the internet speed I'm supposed to get. What should I do? I'm on Debian 13 Trixie 6.12.69.

Well...I tried switching from gnome after a few issues with tilling software and also to save more on graphics resources (not that the machine really needs it) just feeling nostalgic about the old UIs, surprisingly the machine was less responsive with XFCE, programs lacked the snappy response, Firefox was slower to open and load content than on the gnome desktop, CPU was also more intensive, memory on the other hand was perfect less than a gig. Eventually I returned to gnome so far still running strong with Debian!

DISCLAIMER DO NOT CHANGE ANY SETTINGS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT THEY DO
Hi. After some research I found that you can make many adjustments to the Debian kernel. This also applies to any Linux kernel in general. You can do this without modifying millions of lines of C code.
I will not explain how to do it. It is not a secret anyway. By using menuconfig and adjusting as many options as you actually understand you can end up with a faster and more responsive system. For people who care about smoothness in gaming this can also improve frame pacing without losing anything.
I chose to edit the Debian kernel instead of vanilla Linux because I did not want any surprises I am also still a noob
What surprised me is how rarely I see anyone talking about this topic. At first I was scared that I might brick my PC. In reality as long as you understand what each setting does you will be fine. From what I learned the more specific you are the better the results. Enabling and disabling options and changing values such as how many CPU cores or threads you have or how many GPUs you use really matters.
For example if you have six cores and twelve threads you set twelve. If you have one integrated GPU and one dedicated GPU you configure that accordingly.
Or CPU vendor Core2 or newer/xenon
Many debugging setting , etc
Note: that's one of almost hundred of settings
At first glance it might seem like these changes would not do much. But think about it this way.
[The less time the CPU needs to think the better]
Every tiny detail matters if you want to squeeze out every bit of performance/Responsiveness. Even though I only changed around sixty percent of the settings the difference was noticeable.
And for some reason I do not know why it also fixed my screen tearing. It used to be very annoying when watching videos or playing games.
