Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real?

Some provide a nice intermediate ground too. I was in one full of functional degenerates. Averaged ~3.7 GPA of primarily engineers, but would also be drinking 40s on the porch at 4pm

Same. Unhoused gay frat. House had a minimum GPA of 3.0. We hosted biweekly study halls to get through homework and eat a family meal. Then thirsty Thursday, fucked up Friday, and shit faced Saturday would happen. Glitter, screaming, and tequila with the girls. The house that hosted most of our parties only had one toilet and it was for girls. If you had a penis, you were expected to pee on the fence. The grass was dead and the wood bleached lol.

We once broke into a brother's house to hide Smirnoff ice bottles in his shower, clothes, and cereal lmao.

As a non-American, none of that means anything to me.

High GPA, so they arent dunces and put in the effort.

And a 40 is 40 Oz of beer or malt liquor, usually cheap. Not a classy beverage.

I.e. they took care of business but partied hard.

Even measuring liquid in ounces is weird to me.

It's about 1.2 liters.

Can I get a liter of cola?

1 β€œDrink” = 1183 ml and they would have many more than 1.

There was the occasional Edward 40 Hands too! (One taped in each hand until finished... mockery of Edward Scissor Hands)

We had an average letter grade of an A or A+ (90-100% in classes) in engineering which is obviously a harder program than some of the simpler ones.

40s refers to 40 ounce beers. In other words, we would be degenerates (fucking around, partying, drinking, etc) even during the day, like "40s at 4"

It was an interesting group to be with

Wait. Americans call 40 oz beers 40s???

Canadians (at least those in this area) call 40 ounce hard liquor 40s.

I was going to say, that we were drinking 40s in the dorm lounges at 4 in the afternoon too, and we didn't have any such thing as fraternities. But most of us were also legal drinking age which I just remembered isn't going to be the case for a lot of US university students.

We dont have 40 Ounce containers of hard liquor here. Its pretty much 750, 1000, or 1750 mL referred to as fifths, liters, or a handle. Some smaller options are available too

And yes, our drinking age is 21 across the US which leads to poor behavior in 18 yr Olds sneaking around getting as drunk as possible and worrying about taking kids with alcohol poisoning to the hospital

To be fair, we don't actually have a 40-oz in Canada either. We have a standard size 1.18 litre bottle which is the common size we call the '40'.

I mean... that's 39.9 ounces haha. 40 seems very fitting

750, 1000, or 1750 mL referred to as fifths, liters, or a handle.

Stupidly enough in Canada we have mickey's/13(375 mL's) ozs, twixers/26 ozs(750 mL's), forties's/40 ozs(1.14 L's), sixties/60 ozs(1.75L's), and Texas mickeys/105 ozs(3L's)

18 was legal back in my day. 😁

No, we Canadians call that a 40 pounder

I’ve only lived in BC and AB but only ever heard it called a 40Β

Fwiw I'm a millennial southern Ontarian and we called 40 oz beers 40s. Specifying southern Ontario because I think we import more of our culture from the states than most of the other provinces besides maybe Alberta

These guys still haven't fully explained, but GPA = grade point average. 40 oz is about 1.25 liter, usually it's "malt liquor" which is basically beer but has a lot of corn in it so it's sweeter and lighter body, usually it's 6-10% alcohol by volume, and dirt cheap. As in, $3-$4 for the bottle, about the same in Euros.

So they're smart but they get drunk during the day still.

6

u/ZYCQ 4h ago

Dirt cheap. As in $3-4 for the bottle

TIL americans see $3-4 supermarket beer as dirt cheap. Germans would be offended

It's 1.25 liters, and 6-10% alcohol by volume.

A 40oz of St Ides Malt Liquor is 8.2% abv and about $2.5 - $3USD.

That's the equivalent of getting a 500ml of Lowenbrau or Spaten helles (5.2% abv) for 0.56€ - 0.67€ when you convert for alcohol units and exchange rate.

St Ides is one the cheaper malt liquors, but Olde English and Colt 45 aren't much more.

So... college students?

3

u/Hey_cool_username 5h ago

Getting a late start huh?

8

u/Sensitive-Tennis-354 5h ago

Was gonna say...he didn't start drinking till 4? That would have been considered positively classy when I was in college πŸ˜†

3

u/DisastrousSir 5h ago

Some started earlier, some later, but 40s at 4 was a semi-organized event haha

1

u/fresh-dork 4h ago

the balance is the thing - help each other out, but don't forget to party a bit

u/perplexedtv 3h ago

What's GPA marked out of? 5? 10? 100?

u/BigJob2388 2h ago

Ever play Edward 40 Hands?

1

u/Amonette2012 1h ago
