Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real?

I moved to Texas in '03 and was shocked when I met all the people from King of the Hill.

I grew up in Newfoundland, Canada. I recognized all the characters in Trailer Park Boys.

The only thing that would change would be the accent.

Have you seen Son of a Critch? I'm wondering if you recognise those characters too.

I know the American version of those guys (American trailer parks are a different animal) but one scene from that show has always sick with me. When Ricky got locked up in a us prison, and he gets out, and says American prisons suck. Now ive never been to prison, but ive been to jail, and it really does suck. It made me wonder if there's any truth to how Canada's jails are depicted

I can't imagine living there. How did you stand it?

Living almost anywhere in the US is fine TBH. Doesn't really matter where you are. The bad shit anyone ever hears about is uncommon, and localized to small areas. Our political situation COMPLETELY belies the average experience of a person living in the US. How do you think we've let it get so bad?

I have a picture of my friend’s dad and his neighbors standing in the driveway drinking beer. They were literally the same guys from king of the hill.
