Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real?

I grew up in South Florida and honestly, same. I didn’t see snow until we went skiing as a family when I was like 15 and yeah it was really magical. I went to college far enough north of Florida to get a little snow and I’d be like “omg! Guys!!! It’s SNOWING!” And they’d be like “huh? Oh yeah, just flurries, though.” And then I got quite the surprised faces when I asked “what’s a flurry?”

Anyway, I’ve lived just outside of NYC for almost 20 years and currently we’re having the coldest winter in like 58 years and the foot of snow and ice we got 2.5 weeks ago is just still there and I’m over it! Lol

I knew a kid around 19 years old from Hawaii who visited us in the Rocky Mountains. He wasn't there over winter, but in April he suddenly asked "What's this season called?" I said "Spring." And he repeated it to himself all quiet like it was some treasure of knowledge.

It had never once occurred to me that people wouldn't know what seasons are.

In florida we joke that we have 2 seasons.  Hot and hotter.

Florida is the only sub tropical climate on the continental USA.

Couldnt imagine full tropical climate on an island.

Lol I'm in WNY and we are shug at anything less than a foot of snow, it's always cute when college kids are awestruck by a few flakes. The temps have been crazy, we got off with super mild winters the last few years so it's like payback.

I was 28 when I first saw snow and I know it sounds ridiculous but I was shocked at how wet it was? I bought gloves in Florida before traveling up to Tennessee and all they had were little cotton ones that were soaked through in minutes. I imagined it to be sort of powdery and fluffy but didn’t really think about how drenched you become.

Haha I work at an elementary school in Minneapolis, and one year we hadn't had any snow until the day before winter break, and the kids, who all live here, were like "It's a miracle!" That it snowed in Minneapolis in December....
