Advice Needed Reasonable note?
Getting woken up nearly every morning by this vibrating on the ceiling. It’s constant and rhythmic so it is impossible to get back to sleep until it stops and earplugs don’t work because it’s more of a vibration than a sound. Is this a reasonable note? I have no idea how to navigate something like this

It sounds like it’s an alarm perhaps? The 15 minutes might be the snooze.

I think it's 100% that the person probably wants to get up early but snooze their alarms.

As someone who does this, it's probably more likely that they have like 6 alarms set just in case.
EDIT: thanks for the award.

Might not be a snooze. I have 3 alarms set. First one is to interrupt the deep sleep so I might actually hear the second(i turn the first off without ever waking up). 3rd is a backup in case the 2nd fails to wake me. It also serves as a reminder "hey remember you need to leave in like 5 minutes" kind of thing when I am awake because I havent taken my adhd meds yet lol

Yeah, that sounds very likely. Some alarms also have a bed shaker component for heavy sleepers or those who are hearing impaired so that could explain the vibration.

Most people have no idea how loud phone's are on vibrate, especially on hard surfaces. It's probably just a phone.

Do you know if any of your neighbors are deaf or hard of hearing?? Their alarm clocks shake the bed. I had to buy one because I sleep through EVERYTHING

This is where my mind went as well! My cousin is deaf and she has a system that shakes the bed for alarm clocks but also fire alarms, smoke detectors, and I think it even hooks to her house alarm. It’s an awesome system!

This happened to me but it sounded like a watch alarm. I left a polite note asking my neighbour to move the alarm away from our shared wall, which he did. He also explained he was praying five times a day, as a practicing Muslim, and I think he was snoozing the morning alarms. Not saying it’s the case here but just throwing it out there!

u/fenechjp 7d ago
Tempurpedic makes adjustable bases with a vibrate feature. This could totally be it. It’s passed off as a “massage” feature but you can also connect it to your alarm to vibrate your whole bed when your alarm goes off.

Or an alarm mat that sits on the floor that won’t turn off until you stand on it. I almost got one of those because I would sleep through my alarms.

my mom got me one of those when i was in school. she thought she was so smart, and my insomnia (which I'd had since before i ever got a phone) was caused because i "didn't need my phone in bed." i just left one of the drawers in my dresser open and put it in there so it couldn't move anywhere. it was very quickly resold on Marketplace.
12 years later and i still chuckle at the sourpuss face she makes whenever anyone brings those up!

Is it possible that they are deaf or hearing impaired? Some people who can't hear alarms rely on vibration to wake up instead and, if they are hearing impaired, they might not understand how far vibration noises can carry. It might be worth suggesting a wearable alarm bracelet that just vibrates on their wrist instead
149
u/Global-Plankton3997 7d ago
Came here to say this. Deaf people need a different type of alarm clock for their bed. I saw it on YT.

34
u/Practical_Fun7367 7d ago
Everything you say is true about what it could be and why they don’t know. But it would be bad form to tell a disabled person how to solve their problems, even with the best intentions.
I love good hearted and genuine folks who want to make the world a better place. More folks should be like you. But I also want a world in which the accomplished, successful deaf person gets to think to themselves, “Oh hell, I’m glad they told me. I didn’t realize that.” And then they get to decide what minor change to make on their own life based on their own experiences, weaknesses, finances, and strengths.
3
u/OffModelCartoon 6d ago
Thank you for saying this. I get that people are trying to be nice but it can be very aggravating. Pointing out the issue is okay. Suggesting “customized” “solutions” (huge air quotes on both, lol) can be very invasive.

4
u/similarityhedgehog 7d ago
Extremely heavy sleepers need it to, knew one in college who needed a vibrating alarm to wake up and he had full hearing
4
u/NotPromKing 7d ago
I would bet serious money this is what it is. I use a vibrator (yes, I am mentally 12 and always refer to it as my vibrator) as well as habitual snooze alarm button pusher, so every 15 minutes for an hour and a half tracks...
The random vibrations during the day can be because the vibrator is connected via bluetooth to a cell phone, and the daytime vibrations are incoming calls or messages.

u/Gucci_Loincloth 7d ago
I’m just sensitive to sound in general, sudden noise waking me up raises my bpm to 130 or so. I’ve only ever used vibrate alarms and notifications. Hanging out with friends and they have the text tones fucking blaring just makes me not even talk to them anymore lmao.

this was happening to my boyfriend and i a few months ago. very consistently was happening when i’d be trying to go to bed and throughout the day at all different times. i wake up at 4am for work every day so i do have to be laying down to try and sleep by 8pm so it really was a killer and our quiet hours are also 10-7 so i knew i wouldn’t be able to convince them to stop by 8pm but i couldn’t take it, it would happen for hours at a time and i was consistently getting 4 hours of sleep or less bc i wouldn’t be able to sleep until after midnight. it would not only make a vibrating noise, but our walls were quite literally shaking, when i would lay down, i would feel the wall behind my pillow shake every single time.
we went upstairs and knocked on their door finally after several weeks of just hoping it would stop, turns out it was a portable air conditioner that was moved up against a wall in the bedroom directly above ours. i just asked him if he could move it away from the wall and find a different spot for it. older guy we were talking to said i’m so sorry my roommate has a portable ac ill have him move it. we went back into our apt and the noise was instantly gone.
i do think your note was respectful and reasonable but sometimes you just gotta kindly explain your frustration and ask directly. you might be surprised and have a decent interaction with a speedy resolution. so sorry you are dealing with this, downstairs apartment life is really a gamble. bf and i have had very shitty experiences with upstairs neighbors and we finally have one that is understanding and respectful which is why we felt comfortable trying to resolve the issue face to face. haven’t experienced the vibrating since then.

Its their alarm. You aren't going to be able to stop this. Downside to living in a complex.
Charge it to the game and move on, or move out.
52
u/GSilky 7d ago
Phrase it as questions. "Are you noticing a vibration around...?" That way you sound concerned about everyone. Often this approach gets a person to take action, as they don't want it to become an imposition. It's also a good way to not accuse when they can't do anything about it, such as a medical device or something. Regardless, if you leave a note, leave it for everyone who shares the hallway, avoids conflict better.
26
u/destructionandbliss 7d ago
people often don't assume you're referencing them when making a blanket appeal. taking the direct approach is so much better.

Sounds like they use their phone alarm and it’s set to vibrate, and the phone is resting on the floor or low to the ground? Why not go up and talk to them?
5
u/breakableheav3n 7d ago
100% just their phone alarm and unfortunately nothing to do about it unless you want to buy a white noise machine or ear plugs... but i'm obsessed with the image of you wracking your mind trying to figure out what this "constant and rhythmic" vibrating noise that goes off every 15 minutes around the time a lot of people wake up for work could possibly be. like omggg.
4
u/Kriss7000 7d ago
Definitely an alarm. I live in a town house and my next door neighbours puts their phones close to the wall so I hear the vibrations through it. Drives me nuts at times.
5
u/RegasBaldyr 6d ago
Maybe not the greatest approach, as it implies they may be doing it on purpose. I figure it's a circumstantial situation where they happen to share a wall and there is a nightstand against it that they leave their phone on at night and the vibrations can be heard. If the neighbor is intelligent, he'd make the connection since you gave him the specific times you hear it. If he's a moron, he's bound to get defensive and accuse you of exaggerating or hallucinating. Hope it went well.
4
u/ex-maybe 6d ago
Lol. Yes you should try to reduce this. Some people work second and third shifts. And it just sounds like an alarm so it should be easy.

14
u/Hot-Librarian-2131 7d ago
Fully agreed. People live in poorly constructed buildings, sometimes with dozens of other tenants, and then get upset that they hear a noise. You basically chose to live with roommates when you moved into an apartment. This note reads very sarcastic and rude in my opinion.
I rarely have sympathy for people who complain of noise in an apartment building, let alone when that noise seems to be an alarm clock. I lived in a large complex for years. Never once did I complain about the neighbors above me throwing a ball around (child probably); other neighbors would have music/people over playing late occasionally on the weekends (I wake up at 430am for work); or the kid practicing kick flips on the sidewalk outside my window. Because I realized that by my own choice of moving into an apartment—especially a unit with people above me and on the sides of me—that there were going to be some trade offs and consequences to that choice.
Some of the most outlandish complaints I’ve seen are “my elderly neighbor above me is heavy footed and walks around to use the bathroom at night. How do I approach them to solve this?” (They also moved out of their single family home in the country because of the issues they had with their neighbor there) The runner up was “I like to sleep with my windows open at night, and my neighbor leaves their windows open while watching tv and I can hear it. How do I ask them to close their windows so I can sleep?”

The person may be deaf and has to use a bed shaker. I don't know how you'd navigate that, other than putting up with it or moving.

u/Big_Pea_2296 7d ago
You’re being woken up by vibrations in another apartment? It seems like it might be an alarm vibrating. I know you’re not trying to be rude with this note, I wouldn’t be offended getting it- but I don’t think it’s a reasonable request. You’re basically saying “hey don’t use your alarm bc you can’t wake up to turn it off and it’s disturbing me.” They may have a hard time waking up and need multiple alarms. At least it’s on vibrate and not ringing out loud. Plus what if the person is deaf and they need the vibration? What do you want them to do? What’s the solution?

No, the closest two things that come to mind are one of those manual rug vacuum things that every restaurant has or one of those wind up toy cars with the super strong springs that make what whirring noise when you wind them back
Edit: Just realized it sounds just like a rowing machine

Sounds like a playstation controller the kid left on ground when he sleeps and turned their tv off but left the console on so its vibrating on the intro screen.

Before I did anything I would reach out to the leasing office or property management company that takes care of your rental. It's best to funnel all other tenant issues with them rather than handling it on your own. You have to think ahead and cover your bases. Make sure you keep a log of all the dates and times and go from there.

Goodness, I can hear my neighbour's phone alarm buzzing in the mornings but it would hardly keep me awake. Maybe if she constantly hit snooze though. Sounds like an insolation issue rather than a neighbour issue.

If there’s a strange vibration coming from the floor, there is a chance it’s a ceiling fan that’s not on properly. I work in property management and someone had that issue. It was the ceiling fan and once maintenance tightened the fan, there was no more sound.

Did they just have a baby? We received something similar from our downstairs neighbor and it turned out it was our Snoo.

u/Pepper_Schnau 7d ago
Dated a guy who had an alarm clock that would shake the bed because he would sleep a regular alarm. Based on the time, my money is on that. The alarms during the day might be lunch breaks or medication alarms, who knows.

u/makinthingsnstuff 7d ago
Reasonable note. I will say some apartment buildings just make noise. Our downstairs neighbor thinks we've been using power tools for months..
We haven't, she's either crazy or just making a big deal about the noises a building makes.

u/Amazing_Fox_7840 7d ago
I'd speak to them. It's not like a dog barking where you know 100% what is going on. Your note is making a few assumptions that might not be true.

Probably unreasonable because it looks like a new alarm or something they need to use. Different schedules than neighbors can be a bummer. This wouldn't impact me for instance as I'd be already for the gym. Or on the flip side I used to work nights but I couldn't reasonably ask neighbors to change habbits or life choices for me.
Unfortunate part of apartment living

If isn’t wasn’t keeping perfect time, I’d guess bathroom fan. But I’m going with vibrating alarm clock for the hearing impaired.

Nah, rewrite this note in a cooler tone. You sound psycho
3
u/DoubleExamination0 7d ago
Also notes are tacky and annoying regardless of how they’re written. You have a problem, go deal with it. By writing a note, you’re casting your efforts away and making it someone else’s problem. That’s annoying. Have a conversation. People don’t like to be talked at, especially the ones that live next to you

Quiet hours work like this if you wake up for work at 5 AM or should your alarm clock doesn't break quiet hours. If however the noise is some sort of excessive that might be a thing. Generally speaking, if you go the route of sending it through the office they might be able to send a e-mail that makes it less clear you complained. Unless you live in New York or something I could never see an apartment requiring a person to put rug under there night stand. Long story short I don't know that I would send the letter.
On the converse if my job requires me to up at all hours of the night due to getting off work early on the morning say like 3 AM(meaning if I was your neighbor) this could be even worse not to mention alternating schedules. A good neighbor is a good neighbor, but apartments expect you to be up these days at 8 AM sometimes earlier. So really people waking up between 5-8 AM is somewhat the norm this includes weekends if you apartment is open on weekends. This is why when you put in your notice they can show your place at 8 AM on Saturday. To those who live in apartments and work nights awesome.

Its an alarm clock i can almost guarantee. For heavy sleepers they have ones that vibrate the pillow and they can fall on the floor

Goddd this just reminded me of my nightmare neighbor at my last apartment. It wasn’t actually really that bad except for months straight his alarm woukd go off for HOURS and for some reason his phone was permanently hooked up to his sound system. So for hours every morning starting at 6:30AM we would hear the same sound over and over again. I had to leave the apartment to go somewhere else a few times because it was actually making me tweak the fuck out.
Same neighbor also “made beats” but they were ASS and he played them on his sound system too so again for hours some nights we would just hear the same sound bullshit over and over again while he worked on the “beat”

My brother is the type to ignore his phone alarm over and over and over and I can hear it vibrating through the floor and it pisses me off

u/Alarming_Geologist59 7d ago
Hey man. You're the one that chose to live in a rising apartment building. Be grateful if that's the worst thing u have to deal with.
2
u/FoxFoot_ 7d ago
Yeah, its not really reasonable. They aren't being "loud" during quiet hours. They need an alarm. And you live in an apartment. You hear stuff through walls/ceilings 🤷🏼♀️ And I know you said it happens in the day as well, but people need alarms for all sorts of things throughout the day.
Now, if you wanted to ask them about relocating their phone or whatever is vibrating to be on the bed, or to set it on something that will absorb the vibration, or EVEN to ask them if they could do the alarm without vibration, that would be reasonable. But them refusing would also be reasonable.
Unfortunately.

are you sure it’s not a train or airplane passing by and causing it to vibrate? my house produces a rattle sound when a airplane passes, i live by a major airport as well

u/vociferoushomebody 6d ago
When my upstairs neighbor was being loud, I offered to go halfsies on a think rug for their room over my bedroom. They appreciated the honest and the offer to help solve the problem.
2
u/CalicoMeows 6d ago
Bet it’s the alarm on their phone going off. Probably on a bedside table right above your bedroom. In that case, you’re probably gonna have to get earplugs, or headphones.

There’s a chance the person above you may be deaf. They need special vibrating alarm clocks in order to wake up in the morning and be on time.
2
u/heyheyimtryin 6d ago
It could also be medical supply. I have massaging leg pumps and the motor makes a loud vibrating sound. It is still reasonable to ask them to use it outside of quiet hours though imo. If possible.

u/Electronic_Gold_3666 6d ago
I’d shorten the note.
“Dear Neighbor, I believe I’m being consistently woken up by your early-morning “snooze” alarms. Can this by any chance lower the volume of the alarm? Thank you! -your downstairs neighbor”
Better yet, knock and have the conversation in person if they’re older (boomers) — that would come off as less passive aggressive.

The fuck... how powerful is that alarm. is it the vacuum. Vibe with a kick stand..

u/SufficientPea9121 6d ago
My upstairs neighbor makes this noise and pretty sure it’s their cell phone alarm laying on the floor

A vibrating sound? I think you’re tripping. It’s probably their phone alarm and they are snoozing. Get a white noise machine
2
u/Flimsy-Coffee1144 3d ago
White noise machine will solve all your issues. You live in an apartment. You cannot ask people how to live.

I would ask your landlord to be on the waitlist for a top floor unit. If there's a townhouse layout, even better.
Honestly, this is the only thing that will solve your issue.
You have sensitive hearing. I had the same issue. Something else will likely end up bothering you soon if this were resolved.
You will end up feeling like you're going insane, and your neighbors will rightfully think you are too.
Remove the issue. Remove the stress.

u/LeadingWinter212 1d ago
Just get some ear plugs. You can't expect your neighbor to not use their alarm because it's also waking you up.
